Got this record and in the middle of the playing surface it hasw like paint in the grooves and of course this causes it to 'swoosh' for a minute.

I've tried everything to get this out: starting with washing up liquid and warm water, servisol 30 foam cleanser, vinegar (!), 'sticky stuff remover' and even half an hours worth of electro-magnetic cleaning (you could see the area being attacked but it just wouldn't move it). So, anyone got any ideas as to what might be able to get in the grooves to clear it out?

Is it vinyl or styrene Pete? Styrene is not as forgiving as vinyl if it comes into contact with petroleum based products, you might find its etched the surface & you'll never shift it. I was thinking of getting a small ultrasonic cleaning bath to try, works pretty good with old carburettors :thumbsup:

It is styrene, but that was what I used - an ultrasonic cleaner - wouldn't shift it

You could try the glue method, although I seriously doubt it'll work with paint...

You may laugh, but this really does work.

Pete, place the record on a flat surface and smear a layer of thick bleach or Domestos over the affected area (it has got to be thick bleach, not thin). Leave for a couple of hours, or until dried. Wash the residue off under a tap, dry and play. Most of the time, I find that whatever's left in the grooves gets played out.

You may have to repeat this process twice or three times, but rest assured - bleach is NOT destructive or corrosive to vinyl. I just cleaned a similarly paint-stained copy of "Tutti Frutti" by Little Richard on Specialty with brilliant results.

I have many times successfully gotten paint out with 91% isopropyl alcohol. It has to be 91%, 70% doesn't work. I dab it onto a microfiber cloth and scrub the grooves with it. I usually am getting out paint drops though, it doesn't usually look like a broad stain like your pic. It's worth a shot though.

:ohmy: HI PETE, AT A GLANCE YOUAINT GOT MUCH CHOICE RELAY, AS THE RECORD LOOKS THE WAY YOU DESCRIBE THE SOUND, SO THE BEST WAY TO START WITH, IS TO TAKE IT IN STEPS AND CHECK THE SOUND EACH TIME,.

ALSO IT HELPS TO KNOW A BIT OF CHEMISTRY, ESPECIALLY ON WHAT PAINT YOU THINK IS ON THE VINYL? IT IS A FACT THAT MOST PAINTS THESE DAYS CONTAIN A FORM OF PAST IN THEM TO MAKE THE COLORS VARIABLE AND TO GIVE THE DIFFERENT FINNISH eg:= MATT, SILK GLOSS, ALL STRETCH THE MOLECULES TO GRASPE WHATEVER THEY COME IN CONTACT WITH, THE THEORY IS TO GET A BETTER FINISH FROM LESS PAINT, THE BALANCE AND STRUCTURE OF PAINT CHANGED WHEN THEY DISCOVERED NON DRIP TECHNIQUES, ALSO THE CHEMICALS ARE THERE TO PROTECT WHAT IS UNDERNEATH THE SURFACE, AS THE MANUFACTURER WANTS YOU TO HAVE THE BEST QUALITY PAINT. BUT NOT A EVERLASTING ONE, AS HE WANTS YOU TO BUY MORE PAINT EVERY 4 YEARS OR SO, THE OTHER CONSIDERATION IS HAS THE PAINT WELDED ITSELF TO THE VINYL? IF SO YOU WILL NOT GET IT RIGHT IN 100000 YEARS. HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO TRY, AS ALWAYS IF THESE DO NOT WORK OR CAUSE FURTHER DAMAGE I DO NOT TAKE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF ANY ONE ACTIONS.

1. IS TO WASH THE RECORD WITH A DILUTED DETERGENT WITH A 1" PAINT BRUSH AND THE RECORD ON A OLD TURNTABLE CLEAN THE RECORD INSIDE OUT(FROM THE MIDDLE) X 5, CLEAN BRUSH AND REPEAT FROM THE OUTSIDE IN X 5 RINSE RECORD AND DRY WITH CLEAN 2" BRUSH AND METH SPIRIT, USE A LINT FREE CLOTH, ( IF YOU HAVE A EMULSION PAINT IT WILL HAVE SHIFTED SOME AWAY}

2. ON A DRY RECORD BLUE TACK THE AREA AND LEAVE FOR 10 MINUTES WITH A SMALL WIGHT ON, PEEL BLUE TACK OF, IF YOU HAVE ANY MAGNIFIED GLASSES CHECK THE BLUE TACK FOR PAINT? IF YOU SEE SOME YOU ARE IN LUCK.

3. WITH ELECTRICIANS TAPE AT ROOM TEMP APPLY TAPE TO AREA EFFECTED MIND THE RECORD LABEL LAY FLAT IN A WARM AREA, THE TAPE WILL GET TACKY, AS LONG AS THE ENVIRONMENT IS SAFE LEAVE FOR 24 HOURS. REMOVE TAPE AND CLEAN GROOVES FROM THE CENTER OUT WITH LITER FLUID TO GET RID OF TAPE GLUE RESIDUE,(LIGHTER fluid IS SAFE AND GREAT FOR RECORD REPAIRS)

4. IF YOU ARE SEEING SOME RESULTS OF REMOVING THE PAINT, THEN YOU CAN PAINT THE RECORD ALL OVER WITH PVA GLUE, LEAVE TO DRY 24 HOURS, REMOVE THE GLUE BY PEELING THE SKIN ( THIS METHOD IS THE BEST WAY OF GETTING RID OF SNAP CRACKLE AND POP FROM A RECORD THAT I USE MYSELF,

CLEAN YOUR RECORD AND PLAY,

5. IF YOU HAVE IN-PROVE THE SOUND BIG TIME, STOP THERE.

6. SOAK RECORD IN DETERGENT MIX 20 MINUTES AND USE YOUR VACUUM CLEANER ON FULL POWER AND SUCK IT CLEAN ( A HANDKERCHIEF OVER THE NOZZLE WILL SHOW YOU THE GUNK THAT HAS BEEN REMOVED (RECOMMENDED WAY TO REPAIRER CRACKLE RECORDS, AS IT LINE THE GROOVES TOGETHER READY FOR HOT SPOTTING)

WELL HAVE A GO PETE OR TRY SOMETHING ON A SIMILAR THEME, WHAT WOZ THE RECORD ANYWAY.:yes: DAVE
