Just did this mix and wondered what you thought?

I love a good kicking so don't hold back (what am I saying?) unsure.gif

Believe me this was a difficult one to do with a lot of juggling, cutting, pasting etc.

not for me, the voices don't complement each eath other at all, plus they're out of synch........... soz

I could have got the voices perfectly in synch, but I thought that slightly out would sound more realistic. I you listen to an actual live duet, both singers normally sing in their own style adding their own bits here and there, not exactly together.

Hi Steve

Don't know if you could do this but I would love to hear the following duet please smile.gif

Johnnie Mae Matthews and Calvin Williams - Lonely You'll Be

Johnnie Mae was released on Art, Jam and Atco. Calvin Williams was on Northern Del-La and Atco.

I could supply sound files from original vinyl yes.gif

Fancy the challenge mate? hatsoff2.gif

Cheers

100% mate, wing em over to me and I'll ave a go.

Dusty seems a little to 'up ' in the mix for me mate, but otherwise a fine effort.

That is how she sounds on the original, there are no key changes in there whatsoever. If you start changing keys it either makes them sound like Mickey Mouse or Herman Munster LOL!

No, the backing tracks are the same but played differently ...

What you mean like Eric Morcambe - "I'm playing all the rights notes. Just not necessarily in the right order" ?

Got both the tracks here Richard, on first listening the Calvin Williams is quite a bit slower than Johnny Mae Matthews, so will take a bit of work to get it right, but I'll see how it goes.

Here ya go then, sounds a tiny bit strange cos the backings are quite different, but hope you like it all the same.

Johnny Mae Matthews & Calvin Williams - Lonely you'll be.

Steve I'm not sure how you do these but if you haven't already got it, try a little program called 'amazing slow downer' on which you can alter the pitch, speed, anything you like, and also a good karaoke program will help quiten the backing but keep the vocals.

I thought the radcliffe springfield one worked really well apart from the choruses.

Good man Steve thumbsup.gif

Yeah - agreed it does sound a bit weird in places, and it also shows how differently Johnnie Mae and Calvin approached their own recordings vocally too.

Much appreciated - thanks! yes.gif

I did the Nolan Chance and Denise LaSalle. This was a simple and early attempt.

Northern is not the easiest music to do this to as all early recordings were done live so the BPM is never the same for long.

I applaud and appreciate your efforts Steve .

Here is one for your consideration .......... Barbara Acklin and Dusty Springfield " Am I The Same Girl " .

Good work.

I'd love to hear a version that has just JR's voice on the first verse and chorus.

Then Dusty alone on second verse and chorus and voices together on the two choruses at the end as you have already done.

To my ears that would give a better BALANCE and BUILD.

But I appreciate that may not be the effect you were looking to achieve.

Just a thought.

(P.S. Knowing Dusty's sense of fun - I bet she would love this.)

Obviously the title would have to be changed Steve  ........

Steve

This is the sort of vibe I was thinking of.

i.e. I think it's nice to hear the purity/integrity of the separate voices - then bring them together either just before or just after the instrumental break.

So if you've got a spare half hour some time . . . . . . . ! thumbup.gif

I use Audacity. Magic programme.

Now, let's hear you do 'Do ya wanna ride?' - Joss Stone & 'Soulful strut' by Peter Nero! :sleep3:

I don't know if it was personal choice or what, but Dusty was usually well up in the mix. It used to be general practice before rock'n'roll came on the scene. I guess Dusty was just the last of the great divas. :sleep3:

The programmes I use are state of the art kit, approximately £7-8000 worth of software, but still Northern is not easy to mix as the BPM is never the same for long with being recorded live, so there is always a huge amount of cutting, pasting and beatmapping to do, and even then sometimes it doesn't sound perfect. But I do love doing it all the same thumbsup.gif

Ouch! I'm afraid if I had access to that kind of dosh I'd be spending it on a laser vinyl player. So far the fund stands at about £2,000. It was higher but I have to keep paying for stupid things like getting the tree cut back to stop the neighbours complaining, taxing the car, buying petrol, repairing the roof (The house, not the car)....

Life gets teejus, don't it?
