What do we know about this label, if anything, I notice a lot of records are produced by Wardell Quazergue and it's part of the same set up as Hot Line etc, just wondered if there were any recommendations apart from Don & Ron and if there's ever been a compilation?

Posted

My recommendation for the label is the rarer second sonics 45 "just like delilah". Their first record is also a nice impressions sounding thing.

I think pomonkey on here knows a lot about the label and should be able to recommend some more R&B type tunes

I've got a few RnB things on the label but can't think what at the mo.......

Joe Haywood now springs to mind

There's an excellent version of Tom Jones' "Never Give Away Love" by Ron Phillips on White Cliffs. The version by Tom Jones was the original B-side to "Stop Breaking My Heart".

Tommy Ridgley "Did You Tell Him" is an all time fave. Superb Soul record.

Sean

I picked up a copy of this after you reccomended it previosuly some time ago just after I got copies of his river city 45 and yes it is fantastic.

I knew you would be on here with this tip when I saw the white cliff title.

yep, there's some interesting stuff on the label, local LA stuff which is Matassa/Sehorn/Quezergue related, but also some stuff leased from other places (I think the Joe Haywood stuff is an example) essentially went under with Dover distribution.

Like this plodder on White Cliffs 230

sonics - come home baby - white cliffs

Also Joe Wilson did a couple of nice deep soul bits on the label.

"I Want To Love You" - White Cliffs 242

"Now You want To Do Right" - White Cliffs 281

Yeah, my kinda sound also mate.

I don't think there is a comp specifically for the label. However, I'll keep my eye out.

There is "Sehorn's Soul Farm" which is a double CD comp of those New Orlean's labels that Marshall Sehorn had a hand in ie White Cliffs, Sansu, Deesu, Tou-Sea etc.

https://www.amazon.co...00781840&sr=1-1

Sample tracks here --

https://www.amazon.co...agSuffix=dp_img

Some tracks on there that don't do it for me but some nice deeper ballads that do. A decent buy for £7.99 post free.

Some crackers on this label as mentioned. Dover was a big player oon the distribution side. Not aware of any material being re-issued as Dave states. maybe the Ace guys can help out? Do seem to remember on here or on an auction John Manship stating he bought out the last remaining Dover stock??? Incidentally just picked up Joe Haywoods I Would If I Could/Warm & Tender Love. R&B dancer one side / vers. of Percy on t'other. Brief history of Cosimo Matassa HERE.. Might have an (Incomplete) discography somewhere...

There's a garage record by Beaver and the Trappers on WC, it's great. I can look it up at home later today if you want the details. Also the Swingin' Apolloes and One Eyed Jacks are garage-ish.

Yes big fan of White Cliffs, remember when put that Joe Wilson on a mix a few years back when it was an unknown and people went nuts for it as was muy evidenced by the ebay price on the next ones, different league than his other stuff, must admit to being a bit cheesy out sometimes and playing Chuck Cornish back to back with the Senator Jones on Shagg with the same backing, Matt did I trade you that Funky funky Football, sadly got one unheard and was rather let down that doesn't at all live up to the title (much as you and I both love Jesse Thomas I know), more importantly, there's 1 total belter of a title missing from the list above, flip of The Rocks, am sure know where have a spare of it filed away at home too......

That should be "I` m Her Only Man" backed with a very nice typical New Orleans sounding ballad in the shape of "I Want To Love You" ... in my box since a good few years as is also another that so far had no mention in this thread...White Cliffs 233 Ann Daniels "Love Bug" my absolute favourite on the label (at the moment). One you dont see too often but one that is just sooooo good

Addition to the discography:

253 Bourbon Street Cabaret Band & Stripping Soc., Inc. - Linda Baby Pt. 1/Pt. 2

Thanks, I've added it to the discography above. Do you perhaps know what the record is like?

273 - Garland Hilton - Return Of Billy Joe / The Loneliest Man In The World

Anyone know how this stacks up to his Seven B 45? I never knew he had this other 45 on White Cliffs. I've certainly never seen it in my travels.

I don't have his Seven B 45 to compare, but here's a scan of the White Cliffs 45:

I wonder if he could be the same Hilton as on this Lodestone 45, also from New Orleans. Does anyone know?

Can recommend this dancer for sure...on the New Orleans R'n'B tip, naturally!

Flipside is a decent enough ballad as well.

:hatsoff2:

Me too.... great tune...played it at Brid Weekender and it went down well lots of interest

I'd call it a heavy jazz instrumental, with slightly soundtracky-sounding trumpet-led melody, busy rhythmic backing (guitar? harpsichord? something odd-sounding), full horn section, nice raw sax solo, and hard New Orleans-style drumming. Part 2 is the same with inexplicably added party/crowd noise. Cool record, but not something one would play at a dance party outside New Orleans itself. Might play at my bar gig or on the radio.

White Cliffs Records was a subsidiary of Dover Records. Most of the latter that I have seen have White Cliffs Music as their publisher. The distributorship, Dover Records, White Cliffs Records and White Cliffs Music must have been under the same umbrella and ownership, possibly with different co-owning partners in the different subsidiaries.
