Godzilla Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 (edited) Despite the heat I've just put my anorak on and sorted out these bits of info (and searched out a few numbers). I think we may now have the most complete list so far of the LA maestro's work. Anyone got any more? 2628 and 2629 look most likely, but it's clearly a pretty random numbering system. Godzilla Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 Two different colour greens, the blue/green is styrene and the green is vinyl That bright green one in your pick is definitely styrene Steve. There's also a deep blue vinyl one that is vinyl and really heavy. As work is driving me nuts at the moment I've indulged in some escapism and collated all the Soul Fox 45s I can find too. Will post up in a moment.
Godzilla Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 (edited) Here it is then. Label listing for Soul Galore / Soul Fox and reproductions of original labels marked: "Exclusively Licensed to Soul Galore Productions" I've left "?" where the numbering system suggests there may have been a release - with the acknowledgement that there may not be one as it changed pretty randomly. I haven't included 45 known to be bootlegged/repressed from the same source but without the "Exclusively Licensed" tag (eg Kenni Smith on GAR 317). Any further additions welcome. Pete S Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 I personally don't think that the later Soul Fox series has anything to do with the first one, someone was just using the same label.
Godzilla Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 I personally don't think that the later Soul Fox series has anything to do with the first one, someone was just using the same label. I'm really busy at work and it acted as a nice little distraction so I don't care if the only comment is not even damnation by faint praise, but is in fact entirely negative Seriously though, I never considered that. Makes sense though I suppose, as the first run of SF was all Mirwood related. Anybody got any more evidence or clues as to was responsible?
45cellar Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 Strange that when these were done, The Mirettes became The Belles. SF 1001 JACKIE LEE – I'LL DO ANYTHING / THE BELLES - LET ME DO IT Would the correct Information have been available at the time I wonder. Therefore a deliberate change to the name.

Godzilla Posted May 17, 2011 Posted May 17, 2011 Wasn't a negative comment at all, it was an observation. Yeah - I acknowledged that with the laughing smiley and by following it with the words "seriously though..."
Pete S Posted May 17, 2011 Posted May 17, 2011 Yeah - I acknowledged that with the laughing smiley and by following it with the words "seriously though..." So anyway....the second Soul Fox label released 45's in 1978 and 79, therefore because of this I'm sure it was unrelated to the original one. I've actually got a name of someone who was said to be behind this series, though I won't say it in public
Markw Posted May 17, 2011 Posted May 17, 2011 Wasn't there a Holly St James - That's Not Love on Soul Fox?
Pete S Posted May 17, 2011 Posted May 17, 2011 Wasn't there a Holly St James - That's Not Love on Soul Fox? Yes there was, definitely, should have noticed it was missing from the discography...

The 1979 ones start at 45/79 1001 so your info would suggest that there are some 45/78 numbers. As for the person responsible - can we play 'Animal, Vegetable or Mineral'....? Wasn't there a Holly St James - That's Not Love on Soul Fox? Nice one. That was the missing SF 45/79 1004 number. Now added it in to the list. Keep 'em coming amigos.

Guest martyn Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 Why for a bootleg label were the people doing them actually giving them catalogue numbers anyway , same goes for other labels like Soul Sounds ? Surely the dealers didnt need a catalogue number to buy 50 copies to sell at nighters & by mail order , wouldnt they just say I'll have 50 Holly St James's for my record bar ?
Airfixkid Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 (edited) stupid question probably but can someone confirm for me if EVERY release on Soul Galore & Soul Fox was a bootleg? And also, does any one know the release date for the first one SG 1000 SOUL THINGS - PROVE YOURSELF A LADY / TERRIFICS - CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF YOUR LOVE? oh second stupid question, I am assuming they were all manufactored in the states? Well the Soussan instrumentals like the one you quote above weren't technically boots as they were the first issues of his own productions. It's a safe bet that no publishing royalties were paid though. As for origin, didn't Pete Smith say he thought the very last lot of Soul Fox releases were from a different source and UK made? Rest of them from LA.
Pete S Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 Several of the labels say "Exclusively licensed to Soul Galore" and I suppose it's not inconceivable that SS found the owner of the label and paid him a couple of hundred dollars in return for allowing to press up 500 records.

Rest of them from LA. Funnily enough, the only money Doni Burdick ever received for Bari Track / I have faith in you was from Simon Soussan - he didn't receive a penny from the 'licensed' latter day releases on CD etc. I have a copy of the letter from SS to DB somewhere ...If I can find it I'll post a scan Cheers Mike B

"Sausalito" is also the instrumental to the Magicians release "Is It All Gone", Edited September 28, 2023 by Mick Holdsworth Added sound files
