Guest SteveC
The Bali Hai room downstairs was the Jazz Funk room with a revolving dance floor. Recall meeting the revolving dancefloor for the first time after having done the Casino on the Friday and Mecca on the Sat. Don't think my head (or feet) coped very well with it but the Notts Palais dayers must be up there with the best. Link to comment Social source share
Guest Polyvelts
We were only young teenagers and not very tough and we got chased through the bullring from New Street and all the way to Hurst Street every time we went. It was almost like the alldayer had paid the skinheads and punks as the pre-event entertainment. The Crown was the big skin/punk pub on the corner at the back of New St station on way to Hurst St, it sounds like you took the worst possible route there !!! I don't think I walked anywhere in Birmingham in late 70s, I was always being chased by someone or other !!!!! And I lived there ! Happy days ! Davetay
Talking of posh ones, I can't belive I didn't post up.. Dunkenhalgh All-Dayer in the mid 70s in Accrington. They where a few of us that walked it there being in our own town. Another All-Dayer in Accrington was at The Spinning Jenny a year or two later. It's quite funny that the Dunkenhalgh is gonna be used to stage the Ritz reunion in July. Edited March 22, 2011 by davetay Link to comment Social source share

MartynJJ
for many reasons but mainly because of my late dad it has to be Notts Palais circa 78 to 81 Why my dad? well he was one of the doorstaff which meant we didn't have to queue for too long, would get in about ten minutes before doors open and get the best seat by the DJ's box and I'd get to see my old man (came from a divorced family and lived with my mum). I used to love getting a wave to come forward and walk past all those in the queue smug in the knowledge we would be the first dancing feet on the floor that day The gang of the day, blimey I have some names but they's all come and joins us on the best seats and there we would stay. I think I'll pop up a seperate where are they now thread My other faveorite day had to be Cleethorpes Winter Gardens, in fact I'd have it over the Palais based purely on music and atmosphere Link to comment Social source share

MJC was definitely a character- non stop student throughout the '70s-better than working His (lack of) driving skills had to be experienced I am told that he eventually acheived his ambition, and is now a Barrister Also, he was directly responsible for me missing Jackie Wilson at Wigan, I've still got the Scars to prove it Tony Link to comment Social source share

Guest mickeyb
Thought it was Romeo and Juliets and then the Locarno? Of course the memory ain't what it was. Romeo and Juliets was probably the scariest nighter I ever went to. The NS crowd definitely wasn't welcome as far as the Jazz Funk lot were concerned and they outnumbered us in a big way. Shame because I would have been quite happy listening to Colin etc in the plush upstairs room for an hour or two. Locarno was much better - didn't seem to be the divide when you wandered between the rooms. Went to Pulse all dayer about 18/19 years later and realised it was the Locarno - complete head f**k. Homage
My very first All Dayer was Sundays at Cleethorpes Wintergardens, as a young 16 year old in early 1977, that took some beating. But then I went to the Ritz 3rd Anniversary All Dayer on Easter Sunday 1978 and had a revelation music wise, changed my direction and life altogether I'd say....LOL! So for me it would have to be the following: 1. The Ritz 2. Cleethorpes Wintergardens. Hard to choose between this and the Blackpool Mecca, but Cleethorpes had a more friendly together among friends/family vibe about it. Blacpool had a buzzing energy, but maybe too many competing tribes from the various UK locations who were trying to be the best on the day! 3. Blackpool Mecca All Dayers Link to comment Social source share

Guest Rich
Cleethorpes Winter Gardens (which in its day, was as good as any AN imo), closely followed by Notts Palais. Went to a few JazzFunk all-dayers in the Kent/Essex area but Purley was pretty massive - must have got 3-4000 in - but could never get my head around a lot of the music. Also made a trip to Reading (Top Rank) which again were belters - but the music was in one main room - which did cause some grumpiness Link to comment Social source share

Munchkin
A few from Wolverhampton used to go to Tiffany's in Newcastle Under Lyme. The Flaming Emeralds sticks in my mind from that venue. Here's a ticket from 1978. Also liked going to the Locarno in Birmingham - particularly after an alnighter. lol, yeh remember, then well kev, locarno always somewhere to go to come down, also ritz, whitchurch civic, few at totw stafford too if i remember correctly... Munchkin
Yes Kev. Watson Hall and Locarno were great. Many happy memories. But for me Todmorden was the only one - it was like a nighter. So many faces from all over. Remember the coach from Cheltenham New Years Day in 81 - picked up at the King Teddy in Glos and a load more got on. Everyone was hung over but by the time we got to about Frankley the vibe had changed completely. Remember Jeff Leach, Sarah Buchanan and a load of the young Cheltenham crowd - made it for me, it wasn't about it's not as good as the Torch/VaVa's/ the Cats/Wigan blah blah - they were just up for it forgott tody(what an hill to get up), n picking mushtooms in the field across the carpark.. Munchkin
Same here, though I usually ended up in some sort of trouble.. Often a nice crowd of skinheads to offer help and advice on leaving the place too. Stafford Top Of The World had some good alldayers in 79 on alternate weeks to the Locarno, unfortunately I was arrested twice by the DS and decided it was probably not the best place for me to go after that. remember this so well pete, always sticks in my mind you on the stairs telling everyone that ds were in....lol Link to comment Social source share

Guest
Cant believe its not been mentioned! The 16 hour alldayer at the Top Rank in Hanley (in 1974?) the Real Thing were on in the afternoon and they were brilliant, opened with Papa was a rollin stone behind closed curtains. Major Lance......brains a little foggy after 35 or so years.....I think Edwin Starr was also on, maybe Jnr Walker, we had done Wigan on the Saturday night and 4 hours later we were on the floor at Hanley.....what a great venue!! Ian Parker
What about Kirby Belars(Painted Lady)a Mr Manship promotion I remember getting there about 11am , because the only bus to leicester was about 10 on a sunday . Soul sam, Bub, JM and an oldies room which was no bigger than a cloak room !! My fave all dayers without a doubt - Nottm Palais, simply because it was my first one (Feb 78) and i never missed one for the next 3 years... that was a close contest with the wonderful St Ives . what a place. hitch hike, bus, train, stolen car .... we had to get there one way or another. Paul R
It's quite funny that the Dunkenhalgh is gonna be used to stage the Ritz reunion in July. I remember the Dunkenhalgh in 75, I had recently been busted & was grounded from Wigan(I was only 16 going on 17). I turned up at The Dunkenhalgh and the local squad started to question me. At this, my smashed sister & her mate, fresh from Wigan, waded in and sterted to give the squad a real hard time for picking on me . Very funny at the time. Weren't the Tymes on live?. All I can remeber were tracks like "I'm Shaft" &"Who Can I Turn Too". I'm sure the second one was cancelled. Paul Link to comment Social source share
Peter
1. Manchester Ritz, we (Wayne & Jackie Bloe, Paul Hitchin, Douglas, Mac, Hilary Mee, Willie Hunt, NattyNeil, Alan Jackson to name but a few) all used to meet up in a pub called "Paddys Goose" at the side of Chorlton Street bus station for a few pints before the Ritz opened. We didn't miss many and the last one I went to was August Bank Hloiday 1979 with my ex wife who was 5 months pregant with my daughter. 2. Any others that fitted in on a sunday. 3. I can remember going to the Casino one Boxing Day alldayer to see Tommy Hunt we got the bus from Swinton (Manchester) and were eating christmas cake and washing it down with a large bottle of Martinit, (Urrgghh).
