Ian Williams Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 What are the ones that are played or were on the NS scene? I believe there are a few Northern type tunes mostly hidden away on LP's? I don't mean his funky "Say it loud / sex machine / I feel good kind of stuff but the more 'soulful' things Interested to 'discover' stuff 'right under my nose' if you get my meaning.

Douglaschip Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Lost Someone - from the 'Hell' album had a few plays in recent years - absolutely great track!
Guest Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 Pre Northern Daze - yep THAT old 1. There Was A Time (Polydor) 2. Night Train (Pye) 3. Hey America (Mojo)
Guest Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 "Why did you take your love away from me" - off the "I cant stand myself when you touch me" lp is worth hearing. Its the LP with "there was a time" on it - also "time after time" is nice and some great JB funk as normal. And as someone mentioned his "Hell" lp is a must, for "lost someone" and more fantastic out n out great JB funk sides. dont buy "lost someone" on the king 45 - it is an early slow version (unless you want that version lol)

Old and well known classics such as "Hey America" "Living In America" etc. I don't go for the more funk stuff but do like some of his danceable stuff for Polydor. However, for myself personally JB comes into his own on his non-danceable straight soul stuff. Georgia On My Mind I Cried ---- up there with some of the best soul records I've ever heard. Bewildered King Heroin A Man Has To Go Back To The Crossroads For Your Precious Love Lost Someone (King) ------------- as a soul record it kicks the shit out the later Polydor cut Not everyones taste I admit but it sure is soulful. Shame on anyone who discounts this because it ain't danceable, listen with yer ears folks not with yer feet Edited March 1, 2011 by Dave Turner

Ian Williams Posted March 5, 2011 Author Posted March 5, 2011 Wow, so there are some great tunes out there then. Love the "People Wake Up and Live" track - this was played once or twice at the 100 Club I think. 1
Ian Williams Posted March 5, 2011 Author Posted March 5, 2011 I just got The "Lost Someone" track on the Hell LP. Fantastic tune, albeit its recorded very quitely on the LP , once you get past the 'gong' noise at the start you have to turn up the volume!
45cellar Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Some great tracks. Artist Of The Week Shame on me for hearing this track on PYE International way back in the 60s & in my Uptempo mode dismissed it. This Record is Sheer Class, One of my all time favourites now. A Masterpiece.
Chris Anderton Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Already mentioned but here it is, from the "Get on the good foot" LP. I used to play this at Albrighton in the late 90s...I first heard it in a record store in Detroit where they were playing the whole LP. I just looked at Shifty and said "this is brilliant crossover"! James Brown "Your love was good for me". Chris
Dennyj Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 Here's one of my fave JB "listeners" - late Sunday night stuff, goes down very well with a couple of bottles of red wine ! James Brown - Kiss in 77 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoT6FsYCkDI
Anoraks Corner Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 ...and for those who like the relentless early R'n'B groove style of 'Money Won't Change You', you better also check out his, 'Let Yourself Go', which also features some nice sax blasts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2sCzd5r92QE

Ljblanken Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 (edited) best James Brown instrumental IMHO is "James Brown's boogaloo" (Smash 2042) from 1966 (not to be confused with "New Breed Part 1 /The Boo-Ga-Loo" Smash 2028 from the same year) other greats are: King 6037 - I've Got Money King 5952 - Think King 5701 - Three Hearts In A Tangle Edited March 10, 2011 by ljblanken
Jordirip Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 One of the best 'B' lines of all time in my humblest and probably my fav. James Brown track, especially the part 2 which isnt on this clip. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcZfwTO1n9c Jordi
