Playing Funk Records At Soul Venues

Talking of soulful funk/funky records, anyone know if this ever got a release as a 45?

Yes, the Edd Henry was released on 45, with 'I got you Lord' on the flip.

Released on the Heavy Hank label, same design as his 'Soul socking soul time' release.

Can see myself liking this in a set..

I know many who would not mind this kind of thing mixed into a set, the problems come when its followed by plenty of the same vain.. Thats when it gets a little too much for many.. While some like more of a certain style, others like a little thrown into the mix..

The task involved of mixing funk influenced tracks is a delicate one... As is the skill/ timing involved in changing the tempo..

Like with most things... Some can do it really well, some are hit and miss at best...

Yet still the ones who can do it the best can lose a dancefloor/ room if they mis-read the crowd... Care should be taken by many promoters when choosing the djs, making sure they get what suits their club the best or in what musical direction they want to go..

As we have said before, this scene is a very broad mix of music styles and tastes.. Now we have individual clubs adopting their own style or what works for them... Feedback on forums/ friends/ other punters can give you an idea of whats in store, plenty of choice, shop around...

I have a very broad taste in music and don't mind a mix of styles/ tempo many times.. I would like to see many styles played in a big main room but know from experience its not the most popular choice, thats why the smaller clubs/ multi room venues with smaller side rooms have cropped up, to cater for a minority crowd and keep the main rooms, just that, a room for the majority taste, whatever that is...

The delicate balance of styles/ tempo will always remain the 64 thousand dollar question..

The same topic comes up all the time regarding RnB/ Mid Tempo, crossover/Latin/ 70s/ modern etc etc.. and will continue while there is a scene and after....

Not much is black and white, the niter and the soul club were/ are seen as different beasts, this aint always the case anymore.. At many venues the only difference is the finish time, the punters/ music style and tempo/djs can be the same... Club nights going past 2am are quite common now, niters having early starts and many people leaving 3/4 am...

Been out all weekend, if this don't make any sense i have an excuse

  • 1 year later...

here is one to stir things up a bit,

who else thinks that all this interest in funk/northern is gonna be a problem for the ''soul scene'' in 5 years time ?

I mean, are we not just recycling another scenes music and trying to make it our own ?

if I want to hear funk records I would go to a funk night...........I go to soul venues to hear soul records,

not saying its all bad, just that I see we are starting to lose the plot a bit in order to try and play something different when we have not exhausted all the play time of soul records yet,and it can only get worse.

just my opinion of course..........but my mates agreed with me on saturday

spot on.

Guest Gazfunk

Here's a mixcloud mix I did a couple of months back - it's tracks that I think are "funky" but not necessarily funk. Some of them are probably well-known to you guys, some less so.

Anyway, have a listen - all comments welcome. If anyone likes any particular track(s) and want to know the name of it, just ask and I'll let ya know.

Enjoy: https://www.mixcloud....unk-outta-here/

can't be any worse than that awful 'tribute' thing doing the rounds at present.. Soul music should have proper instruments, proper musicians and proper soul. not a bedroom DJ mashing together a few electronic voices and coming up with an Ibiza anthem......

i'd rather listen to funky soul any day, over this rubbish

Tribute is terrible, but there are plenty of great soulful dance records that use non traditional instruments, and still retain the right sentiment
