Weird. I don't see that as Funk at all. If I played Towanda Barnes to any serious Funk collectors claiming it was Funk they'd think I was nuts. It's as Northern as they come for me.

But I'd call "Ton Of Dynamite" Northern Funk.

Ian D :(

B side of Towanda Barnes has had plays ... Funky R&B ? I have an unreleased acetate instrumental of this that has had spins also..

Also " If I'm Guilty " has yet to have its day...

Well here's my twopence worth , I like what I like and used to be very narrow minded to the point

of when I was in my teens wouldn't buy a record if it were by a white artist! (does that make me racist even though I'm white :g:)

but getting back to the question , my son George is 21 and loves a lot of the old 'Top 500' sounds , in fact one of his favourites

is Sam Dees - Lonely for you baby (bit funky ?) and the likes of Al Green - keep on pushing love. We've had Funky Northern for a bloody long time and some I like and some I don't. Surely the likes of LOU PRIDE , JAMES LEWIS, BOBBY FRANKLIN, WORLD COLUMN, BLACK NASTY, EDDIE PARKER (Body Chains) etc. are funky sounds that are classics and have filled the floor at a 'Northern' do?

I really think it very difficult to label any sort of soul (Read the Crossover thread!!!) but at the end of the day if the beat is right people will dance and if it aint they wont .

Cheers

Swifty

p.s. I love a few tracks by SLAVE that would fill any dance floor wink.gif

I should clarify that with the above post regarding James Brown I'm not advocating the wholesale playing of Marva Whitney / Vicki Anderson hits. That would be too easy, no matter how good they are as pieces of music. A lot of people will slate me for this but I believe for any record to have true legs on today's allnighter scene it should have a degree of exclusivity. That doesn't logically mean it should be expensive in monetary terms, but I do think it should mean a record which you can't hoover up dozens of copies of on gemm or musicstack. That's a purely personal opinion and I respect the views of others who may not feel the same.

Good call Mr Madras, other side for me though,"Burning up for your love".

James Brown? - "Money can't change you PT2" for me.More of a driving beat.

dont think anyone's mentioned dancing yet, I mean most of what are being termed as funky northern you can dance to whilst still retaining a sembalence of the trademark northern footwork, Whist generally things that dont retain a four to the floor, ie lots of james brown influenced sounds are never going to cut it on a northern dancefloor.

I think this is the answer in a nutshell. Most 'Real' funk records you couldnt really adapt the 'Northern' style dancing to, they just too damn FUNKY ! But you can stomp and shuffle to funky northern just like you used to Black Nasty,'there was a time','Psychedelic soul' East Coast connection, George Bad Benson, 'Ladies Choice, back in the day !

If you dance Northern to it - then it's Northern.

In answer to the original post..

I don't see how it can be harmful to 'the scene' more than listening to the same 500 records over again.

What was the venue that you refer to in your original post and the djs ?

Thanks for the pointers. Give my funk/northern set a quick listen on refosoul Soul Cellar Funk lemme know what ya think. Hopefully get some more tunes MP3d soon for upload as I have a few winging their way to me at the 'mo, hope they turn up for my next gig on the 5th!

Don't buy Towanda on Grapevine......buy it on A&M.....They're totally different.....one is fantastic and the other is crap!! :hatsoff2:

I just listened to a bit of Towanda Barnes since she seems to be central to a lot of people's opinions, just to see how I felt about them, funk wise. I'd say that basically 'You don't mean it' isn't, but 'If I'm guilty is'. So now I'm trying to figure out why, and it's certainly partly down to the drums and bass, but I'm also thinking it's got a lot to do with the tempo.

If there's any other musos out there, would you agree that funky music tends to be the sort of thing you'd write in 8/8 rather than 4/4? :hatsoff2:

How about this one Carms ?

oooooooooooooowee that is amazing thank you sooooooooooo much , I really have to try and find out more about Del tell me is this one expensive too ? she has an awesome delivery so soulful such a great voice .

https://www.youtube.c...h?v=o7jR4Vd6X6A

That Towana is damn good too ! Its funny how as she hs been mentioned in Royal soul despatchses :hatsoff2: because ..... now do I say this? because no doubt sparks will start to fly . At home when I am in a funky mood and I play my funk playlist in Itunes tucked in there with the tracks I mentioned liking on previous posts is Towaway Zone by Diane Jenkins

The point I am making is there are certain tunes that you can soulfully use to lead you into pushing a normal soulfully receptive audience into Funk .... and this is one of them for me along With Pat and the Neorotics "Watch you do your thing "...they sort of make you want to listen dig a little deeper intro the unknown because they are records that stand alone IMV they have a unique quality about them. The biggest mistake I ever made was selling my Paaaaaaaaaaaaaat ( as Mike Ried would say )

Someone out there will know what I mean . I think the Funk tune has to be really good for me , I dont get off on the bootsy inside your head chart stuff thats too mild, watered down. No Va va voom.

For me Funk gets dirty ....almost primal  when it moves you.

Towanda and Delores are amazing? Current prices?

Delores is a toughie; about 300 ish; though ebay may yield one cheaper...

Both Towanda's are around 75 for original's and as Webby say's get an A&M copy; reissue is good sound too..

Glad you liked 'em FunKPunK !

That Fred & Turbines is also an awesome track.... a stand alone track , very nice indeed .

This thread has been a great insight into some very powerful tunes that are just waiting to be heard and admired for those prepared to listen.

My thanks to all who have shared the knowledge , really appreciate it :D

That's just brilliant , am really loving this thread as I'm sure Ian Wright is as I have a more than biased opinion being someone who has been trying hard to unearth these obscure funky northern 45s since the mid 90s ..

Honestly think this all adds to the sophistication/enigma of the soul scene where the over accessibility of tired oldies via advertising, cheap CD's and dreadful pop pastiche/versions and rip-offs by soul-less karaoke chart dullards has not really helped its credibility in recent years..

As Steve Cato mentioned George Mahood is one DJ with a great knowledge and feeling for these sides currently worth checking out, look out for Craig Smith too who has some incredible tunes, aforementioned praying mantis Ian Wright has just about everything ever recorded in a funky vein and is always worth checking out .... great to see these guys accepted on the scene these days, 5 years ago it seemed almost impossible ..

Seems amusing to me that I was playing well known and obscure funky northern at funk/mod and other soirees mid 90s, some Keb Darge cast offs, some of my own discoveries plus well known Northern funky classics( The Crow, Judy Freeman, World Column, Willie J & Co, Roscoe and Friends even Brand New Faces ) The non-northern crowds accepted it all as dance music in the main, never tried to pigeonhole and voted with their feet....... Now this has eventually crossed over to the main Northern scene is all good news in my book, but again not everybody's cup of tea. If only I lived in UK I might even manage to get booked these days laugh.gif

There are stacks more gems to be heard following on from this deviation/ return to favour of the funkier style of soul; a lot of super obscure late 60s and 70s tunes as well as easier to find records/ b sides of oldies/ reactivations that sound BEST mixed in with the rest of the spectrum of soulful music.. The fact that the soul scene constantly shifts and evolves keeps it fresh IMO, new DJ's come through to shake up the big names, and new comers are drawn in to keep it all healthy and progressive.

I think it's a classic case of "You had to be there" matey, believe me, I've heard far, far worse!

jerry,no you have not heard worse.i never understood where this garbage came from and why it was played.we should expose the people who thought that it should be pressed up in its tens

does the actual record exist, any one got a scan of the label?moving on,, the next tune i heard that had no place in northern circles was the bloody awful my baby just cares for me...????shufflenorthern,twostepnorthern,lounge?lift music.

Has Ernie and The Top Notes' "Dap Walk" ever been played out at a northern night ?

A tune that's basically one part Archie Bell and the Drells "Tighten Up", one part Frankie Crocker's "Ton of Dynamite, and one part James Brown ...(relatively) uptempo and an established rarity.

top tunage there, and i would love to hear that played out

Had this one for years and always thought it had a northern feel to it.I hope this style of funk and tempo become popular. I always wondered why They Call Me Mr Tibbs was never a big northern record. The Fred Williams style don't float my boat.Ernie and the Top Notes just seems like run of the mill boogaloo....Maybe suitable for the rare soul scene.

another amazing track, really enjoying this thread, think my record buying spectrum will have to widen a tad, think the "funkiest" 45 i have is Teacherman- barbara st clair and not heard that played out for years, morcombe pier era, but would that be classed as funk, funky disco, definatley not northern although was played out at niters

Scores so far on the Funk Punk compilation . Be great to have the proper titles . I really enjoyed the session so far , not all of them pulled my chain but a quite a few did ., and I found it thrilling exciting and fresh .

I will put more time at some point and listen to the rest and thank you very much for the contribution.

Track 1 = My turn Now

This gets top marks for me I love it and would happily dance to it HIT

Track 2 - Good on the ear but too fast for me to keep up with, I would imagine if fuelled you could really feel this one perhaps a nighter tune? 3/5

Track 3 = Try me

Great female vocal and yes this scores high for me a great groove that is easy on the ear 4/5

Track 4 = Doing the long John

Wow love that intro and it sounds so saaaaaaaassy Yeah I could dance to this 5/5 HITto me this soooooooul , I WANT ONE ! 5/5

Track 5 = Holy Moses

Some nice pipe work in the intro again very soulful to my ear , not what I would tag as funky , very mellow a nice chiller but then it gets funky towards the end 4/5 HIT

Track 6 - What can you do when you loose the one you love ( about 8 mins in )I love this an immediate Wower for me I would love one of these , I WANT ONE how much ? again to my ears this is SOUL 5/5

Track 7 - Indian road man ?

Not sure about this a very strong vocal but its a little deep for me right now, perhaps a grower , not sure one I would classify as colourfully swirly = MISS

Track 8 - I Just Can't wait any longer Lavern Baker isn't it ?

Lol one I know , bet the crowd like this one J

Track 9 - I'm a good woman

One we all know 5/5 fantastic sound Barbara delivers every time and you never tire of hearing her agony in letting this guy go cause she deserves much better. 5/5

Track 10 - I'm the man

Getting back onto the back foot , this is so James Browny this one yeah I like it makes me want to shake like a jelly roll lol and I love that brass when its on its way in. 4/5

Track 11 - Don't push me away

No this one doesn't do it for me sorry it's a MISS

Track 12 - Funky Music

No again this is too far across the line for me reminds me of Edwin Stars War, which I never did like sorry MISS

Runtime stop at 28.04 need to get ready for work !

I have jumped over the remaining tracks and it gets better really looking forward to giving the latter part of the set with a few beers later .

I pretty much liked everything I heard so agree mainly with Carms comments, apart from track 11 (don't push me away), I thought that was sensational, some of those tracks just make me think why do we have a genre specific scene called northern, whats wrong with just a scene.

A rather elusive want of mine that keeps getting described as Funk by some.

To me it's pure genius & I don't give a flying f**k as to what pigeonhole folks want to put it into as long as I get a copy.

Best played very very loud.

little beaver "do right man" is a deep funk anthem from what I can gather although I find it a very soulful record and just the kind of thing still to realy go big on the northern scene despite being utterly fantastic.

Records like "Do Right Man" and the Fred Williams 45 on Solo are probably too slow to ever become big nighter records although they are absolutely fantastic pieces of soul music. I heard the Fred Williams 45 years before it was used on Funk compilations and always viewed it as one of those 'deep with a beat' things rather than something funky. In retrospect I can now see that it is exactly the type of classic-era soul music which would appeal to people who got into older black music through the hip-hop scene.

I think the idea of 'Dap Walk' going down badly was forged when it was played by a soul scene dj at a venue with some funk scene punters in attendance. It's one of the very building blocks of the funk collecting scene and playing it there would be akin to a 'funk dj' doing a Northern spot and playing something considered really obviously great but at the same time cheesily old hat.

One of the the areas that helped the soul education spread before the internet was tape swapping , do the funk collectors do the same with Cd's? To me that is one of the most effective ways to spread the knowledge fast to those that are voyers , that push the sounds forward, which leads to a much wider acceptance .... a foot in the door so to speak.

My next question is are there any decent funk compilations out there ?

We now have what used to be called ra audio clubs now known as MP3 clubs where collectors/dj's share what they have aquired/ purchased with others .

I myself have been introduced to some great sounds in this way , for the last 8 years my own private club which was born out of everyones hate of R&B has evolved into an anything goes club , which blew many doors open for all of us within it's magic circle lol because we are all people that have Open ears  Frank Jackson taught us to be receptive to anything soulful ( Julie London included ) lol

I would welcome some samplers to play to the club if anyone is willing to share.

The more people that know the music the more they spread the groove ....which leads to a wider acceptance from the dancefloor

there will be some great funk compilations just as with the soul market there is a lot of choice.

dustygroove is a good site to try as they have most CDs
