Rare Soul At The Oscars - Blue Valentine
And the track he choose was
Interestingly a track featured in the talked about a lot film Blue Valentine ( in the list of nominations for this years Oscars) has stirred some interest over the last few months in the mainstream internet world
During the making of the film, the screenplay called for one of the characters to give a "song" to the character played by Oscar nominee Michelle Williams that apparently represented their relationship at that time
The choice of track was given to the actor Ryan Gosling . And the track he choose was "You and Me" by Penny and the Quarters which was a unreleased cut featured on the fairly recent Eccentric Soul comp : The Prix Label by the Numbero label (2007?) .
Given the oscar nomination, his choice and the background of this track, this has as said, led to quite a bit of interest mainstream internet wise and to add an air of intrigue to the whole story, so far it seems no one has actually id'd just who Penny and the Quarters actually were...
Numbero's words...
" Nearly thirty years after the label closed its doors, a mysterious box of tapes turned up at an estate sale in Columbus, OH. Originally thought to be the lost Prix masters, it was instead discovered to be dozens of demos, rehearsals and a few finished songs recorded in Harmonic Sounds' prime. The tape boxes were for the most part unmarked; creating a puzzle that would require some time to solve. Penny & the Quarters' "You And Me" is a random rehearsal by a group no one can remember but, one more song we wouldn't let be forgotten. -- Numbero Group"
