Sjclement Posted August 6, 2011 Posted August 6, 2011 Question What where the best 3 sounds recorded and played by white artists up to 73? that cuts out a lot of the pop crap played at Wigan, I know you could fill this with Spencer Davis Group but.... My view Rufus Lumley I'm Standing Wayne Fontana Something Keeps Calling Me Back Charlie Rich Love is After Me More Today Than Yesterday Spiral Staircase
shelly Posted December 2, 2011 Author Posted December 2, 2011 You can argue over this and as it's an instrumental, but Al Kent-You Gotta Pay the Price was actually Dennis Coffey on lead guitar! Shelly
Guest Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 More Today Than Yesterday Spiral Staircase Kiki Dee is much better.
Sjclement Posted December 3, 2011 Posted December 3, 2011 Kiki Dee is much better. Do not disagree but SS was the one everybody knew in' 73

Wiggyflat Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 (edited) Really suprised to see helen shapiro in there. I always associate it with the dreadful british label pop boom of 1978 by the likes of nev wherry and keith minshull. Alvin Cash and The Registers...Alvin was 10 and the registers were 5...and black.Apologies in reply to Dan Dares list.... Edited December 8, 2011 by wiggyflat

shelly Posted December 9, 2011 Author Posted December 9, 2011 All, The reason I put played before '73 was that after that, there was a tremendous amount of pop crap being played because of the beat, vocals didn't matter that much(wigan late 74-77) though there where some great sounds as well during that period, but, prior to '73, most of the sounds by white artists listed here you would have thought were black; in fact, there's a few mentioned that I still thought were black till I read on this thread. In a nut shell, they were soul records in general whilst a lot of the enormous amount of post '73 white plays where dubious to say the least. My opinion. Shelly
Guest popcorn boy Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 was round these parts i,m afraid....glenn bellamy's the culprit....also an instrumental of "ghost in my house"....howl!! Yes i remember playing( Bobby Paris Personaly) discoverd by Brian Tompkins.who gave me this record to play at the Bletsoe allnighter in 1971. what other pop records did i play first OH YES( Pual Anker When we get there) wow there were loads.that still get plays around the country today.
Guest dicklincoln72 Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 Going back to the 60's I remember dancing to some great sounds but not called Northern in those days. New Beats "Run Baby Run" Lou Christie "Lightning Strikes" 4 Seasons "Let's Hang On" Also used to own an LP called British Blue Eyed Soul on Island with various artists including Spencer Davis, Elke Brooks and Chris Farlowe. Another Album I had was Albino Gorilla with their Motown covers, I think "Shake Me Wake Me" was released as a single and assume they were white but can't remember if it was played out before 1973. The worst white record that was played out prior to 73 has to be Bryan Hyland "The Joker Went Wild" sad to say I still have a copy. Might stick it on EBay.
Souljer6 Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 Have we had Len Barry's "I'll always need you" yet? It's surely a masterpiece to rival Timi Yuro.--And never properly originally released! The world had to make do with Dean Courtney's paler cut.

The world had to make do with Dean Courtney's paler cut. You have got to be kidding...Len Barry's version sounds like an unfinished demo compared to the Dean Courtney masterpiece. In my opinion.

That's a very rare album on Island and one I've never been able to find. Not as rare as "Pakistani Soul Session" released on Island at the same time but still tough. I'm really interested to hear that the Brian Hyland record was played prior to 1973. It was reactivated in 1979 and became massive for a few weeks.
Godzilla Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 That's a very rare album on Island and one I've never been able to find... I have one somewhere Pete and I'd be up for swaps. Let me know if you're interested. Cheers Paul

Guest Gazfunk Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 I'm too young to have been around at the time so I'm sure someone else will know about whether these 2 were played pre-73: Gene Latter - Holding A Dream Bobbie Gentry - Mississippi Delta

Guest dicklincoln72 Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 Seem to remember back in the long distant past hearing Evie Sands "Picture Me Gone" being played in a club. Then again it could have been later than 73 anyone else remember when this was first played?
Jim G Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 "I'm Gonna Change" The Four Seasons was played in 1972. "hey sal oney" Mickey Lee Lane "I've Been Hurt" Guy Darrell "more more of your love" Bob Brady & The Choncords
