Mentioned it before, but I had an EMIDisc LP,

16 tracks for about a fiver.

Oh the Shame.........................

(wish I still had it though)

Tony

Still got one somewhere

Sold a few, they came off Pete Lawson, circa spring 74.

P.S. That should read a sold a lot back in the day, for Pete.

So many I can't remember them all, they cost £5 from Suyndown Records in Wolverhampton, very under the counter; they showed you a list of titles and you chose two, came back the following week and your record was there. I saved up nearly 4 weeks paper round money to buy my first one

reggie garner - hot line / lou pride - i'm comin home in the mornin

then I got

skullsnaps - i'm your pimp / frankie crocker - ton of dynamite

world column - so is the sun / forgot

larry santos - you got me where you want me / king errison - zola

this was in 1975 obviously.

When you got to known Pep and Max, you could buy them out of the shop(s), still a fiver, but it depended what they had in, the worst I bought was probably rosey jones p- have love will travel / the magicians - is it all gone

willie mitchell - champion / jades - i'm where it's at (bought off Swoz at Sammies, terrible recording lol)

willie mitchell - champion / jewels - we got togetherness

pointer sisters - send him back / shane martin - i need you

yum yums - gonna be a big thing / flirtations - stronger than her love (that came from Pete Lawson and his mate, they had a two page A4 list of titles you could choose from in the Wigan record bar)

and so it went on, you have to remember that as kids at school and just leaving school, we couldn't afford originals of big sounds and the only way we were going to hear these things played at our youth club was for one of us to get an emi done.

in 1978, 4 track 10" Pyral discs came in breifly, but the sounds of that time weren't great compared to the previous 2 or 3 years, I still have two of these 10" discs and they contain things like Carol & Gerri, Lou Roberts, Joann Courcey, Tough Girl, Fools Paradise. All cut by Pep.

Was it called 'All-Night or something like that? Had Doug Parkinson on...think Searling had something to do with it

No that's a proper vinyl albeit bootleg LP mate, one side Northern, one side Modern. Side one is absolutely stunning, court davis, john & the weirdest, ty karim, professionals etc. Side 2 is shit.

Now that has definitely come out of The Torch or The Cats era, it's hard to remember when Bok To Bach hadn't been pressed!

plus the "Bad Sounds" comment dates it to before I was wearing long pants

or early Mecca era.

Looking at the titles it's from late 72 or early 73.

Pete, I have had a few of these over the years and all of them have jumped, is there any that don't?

Yes Webby......

I've bored people with this before.....but I don't care.

This is my only possession from my previous life!

Bought Feb 1976 at Wigan Casino for £6.

I have the Wille Mitchell Hi EP but I still play this one out.....all the 'clappy' sound I don't like is 'bassed' out...it sounds brilliant!!!

It's on refosoul as 'Willie Mitchell Acetate'....listen and you'll see what I mean....it's got everything...squeaks, change of volume but it's the bizz!!!!

Best

dogstoat

They would have been some of the ones ' commisioned ' by Tony Worot judging by the hand writting

My only one was Butch Baker Working At The Go Go B/W Promatics Sugar Pie Honey. Bought in 73.

Went to deroy recording Studios, in Carnforth, a couple of times with Pete Lawson in about 74/75. To get his EMIs pressed. At least one of the top jocks at the time(possibly Sam) used the same studio, and the owner used to make a recording of his tracks, to let Pete have them. I think they were about £1.25 to press a 4 track EMI, that Pete would then sell for a fiver. Frank Elson had his knives out for both pete and Keith Bradley, also from Ormskirk, and was always threatening them with legal action in Check Out The North.

Is there a statute of limitations regarding this!! Tony & I used to go to Kettering usually on a Thursday to get a few special pressing done, I remember Willie Mitchell & the Skullsnaps as one very popular seller, and also being asked lots of questions by some grown ups at the Casino about where they came from!!

here are my two, i'm sure popcorn is different to the 70's grapevine mix any one recognise the hand writing

kev

Yes it is. The version that came out on Grapevine was a different take to that on the original Karen single, easy to tell, when the kids first sing "Rosemary" on the original, there's a guitar riff, then they repeat "Rosemary"; on the Grapevine one, they sing it over the guitar riff as well.

lsn't that true of 'You Don't Mean It' by Towanda Barnes as well?? The A&M version was brilliant but the one on Grapevine was chronic!! :hatsoff2:yes.gif

Yes that was the "Gloria Barnes" version off the rare Towanda Barnes LP (Gloria/Towanda are the same person)

The one l had l think had Charles Johnson on it too....Anybody got a tracklist of any type of this?? TA!! :hatsoff2:

I had one with Lorraine Silver on as well, this was before it was played at Wigan and was only getting played at St Ives, it was meant to be Down In The Dumps by Tony Hester but the chap who did them couldn't get that. Having said that, we got a sort of exclusive as it wasn't really known and it became a big record locally via my emidisc. Just for the record - I still think it's great! (Other tracks on there were Bernie Williams, Rain and Al De Lory)

Just remembered I also had a jeanette harper / anderson brothers, a detroit executives / phyllis brown - i've got something on my mind, which I don't think was ever played anywhere, maybe the Mecca?

Pete, is that Rain, Out of my mind?

Always reminds me of that WC documentary that one.

Yes, was a massive record in 76 and early 77, then reissued on that Axe label that Webby mentions.

It's one of those records that people say is pop crap but it used to sound great blasted out loud at Wigan.

Got one 45 left: One side The Tempose c/u (Lil Lavair and the Fabulaous Jades I think) - I'll Be So Happy b/w Lesley Gore - Just Casn't Get Enough of you (same as Apollas on Loma), think this is album only but not sure. Got this from Eric Hetherington local respected DJ we used to look up to as a 16 year old.

Just found an album but don't remember track listing - sure it includes Rain tho. Terrible sound quality.

The paper flier is an insert from an album put out locally, I'm thinking 1990s but not too sure. Can remember who but perhaps politeness should rule.

Yeah Pete, it was massive for a while, agree it sounded great in the Casino,, but one of those that had the longevity of a mayfly, soon got fed up with, if you know what i mean, were Rain white? Was plenty of great blue eyed stuff at the same time that stands the test of time, am thinking of lynn Randell & bobby paris to name a few, but they started playing (well some dj's) some crap too didnt they? Just a matter of sorting the wheat from the chaff.

78 was the year that most of the poorer white records started getting played (Nita Rossi, Blue Chips, Sue Lynne that sort of thing) mainly but not exclusively by Keith Minshull to be honest. I've got a tape of Pep playing Rain in about October 76 and the clapping on it is so loud (also on same tape Matt Lucas, Rosemary, Jay & The Americans Got hung up along the way (played by RS), Yum Yums, Broadway Cissy, Johnny Williams Just a little misunderstanding, Ron Holden, Gentlemen & Their Lady Like Her 12", French Fries, MVP's, Ronnie McNeir, Astral trip - I know all this off by heart having played it so many times after I taped it)
