Guest Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 l have!! My sister,Bernadette,is 8 years older than me,so basically she was more like an auntie cos of the age difference l always thought... Anyway apart from battering me every Wednesday evening when my dad was on 2-10 and my mum went to The U.C.M. (Union of Catholic Mothers) for a couple of hours this is what l remember Northern Soul Wise...mid 60's... She was 4ft 10 and 6 and a half stone and a Proper Mod......All the lads who came to pick her up had Lambrettas,Parkas, and Paul Weller haircuts...She modelled herself on Twiggy and threatened me with death if l didn't eat her dinner when my mum left the kitchen... She was the secretary of The Foundations Fan Club (she said) and lronically the lead singers (Clem Curtis) son lives in my lovely village.. Her timing was impeccable cos as my mum went out on a Sunday morning to the 9.30 mass she would walk around the other corner as she had been to The Wheel and was off her head!!l was OK cos my mum thought that l had been to the 8.00 mass... She went to see The 4 Tops in Liverpool in 67 and l remember the sharrah (coach) pulling up outside the close and half a dozen people jumping on it...Two weeks after she had seen them they released, you've guessed it 'Bernadette'....she told me they had released it cos they had met her....And l believed her! Her forte on a Sunday morning was to stop me going out to play footy and make me listen to records she had bought the night before....Christ,if l hear Harlem Shuffle just one more time........ Last l heard she was a member of The Barry Manilow Fan Club... Come on Kev,Dave and Julie l reckon you must have a shedful!

Right my sister is 11 years older than me and was into rock & roll, so no story there. Apart from me hateing rock & roll because she liked it. A have a cousin who was a little bit older who was into the scene for a while, he stopped going out early 74. He got jumped and rolled after the Mecca, he lived in Blackpool at the time and is was walking home. He was in hospital for a while, he never really got over it. It upset him so much, that he would not go out at night for years. It was not anybody from the scene that did it, I hasten to had. I lost touch with in in the early 80s, no idea what become of him? Fast forward to the mid-90s and we got a invite to a 60th birthday party in Bradford. (same club as the rare and underplayed do is on now) It was one of Louise's Uncle's and I met Lou's Auntie Maureen for the 1st time, anyway we had called there on are way to some all-nighter. We had some lads with us, Maureen asked we we where going after, so we told her and she said is the still alot of gear at nighters? She went on to tell us of her times at the Wheel and Central and told us about some of the Yorkshire lads and lassies she mated about with back than. That's it with members of family and the scene. BTW I think you can had Mick to the Moore's family as well. lol. Dave.
Guest frenchie Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 My brothers and sisters all of have soulful pasts hence I could say I was actually weaned on Soul music! The eldest Richard was an original 60s mod and went to the Wheel before and during the all nighter period, and was actually filmed during the bank holiday riots at Rhyl on Look North!! Scooters lined our driveway on many saturdays in the 60s. Andrew - Andrew French, Crewe - went to the Wheel, Torch, Cats etc etc and is still very much on the scene as is big sis Deb. Who had the unfortunate task of having me tag along at the ripe old age of 12 to BBQs at Market Drayton, Nantwich Cricket Club, Whitchurch all dayers etc. I finally ended up branching out alone in 1974 and went to Wigan after being hijacked onto a train after Mirion St youth club in Crewe on a Saturday night, and my soul/nighter days continue !!!! still attending Burnley and Bradford regularly and enjoying the odd Soul night when we can muster up the strength to actually get in the car and go out! Much to my dear hubbys despair....He has become an armchair soul collector in his old age. I wouldn't change a day of it
