pikeys dog Posted August 4, 2004 Posted August 4, 2004 Someone throw that depressing dog a bone! Take on board all you're saying Pikey but we were trying to make this a bit of fun... From what you have said, the return on investment is very very bad ie: you only get half of the CDs you should and a third of the ones you do get are useless. Is it really that bad - are you saying we shouldn't do this at all? No, not saying you shouldn't do it.... Just a realist / passing on my experiences. Would underline the fact that people need to pop a sticker / their name on the disc, as theres nothing as frustrating as liking a track and having to search through loads of tracklistings until you find it.... WOOF!
Guest Kolla Posted August 5, 2004 Posted August 5, 2004 This style is called "Jamaican Beat" around my part of the country, many of these tracks are "popcorn", too. A lot of Jamaicans, mainly in New York, have their own dances and spin these rare records. Jamaican Beat ?? There's another one to add to the 'northern genres' thread then Welcome to Soul Source Jason. You're on the list ! Up to 12 now. Me / Al Dayo Dan MissGoldie Mark B Mark (VoS) Scott (RichS) Paul (P5OULH) Craig Miff Jock Jason It's Thursday so you have one more day to join the list of contributors, peoples...
Fdsoul6345789 Posted August 5, 2004 Posted August 5, 2004 Sounds like a great idea COUNT ME IN PLEASE BEST FRASER
Dayo Posted August 5, 2004 Posted August 5, 2004 Just a note to ask if you can take account of holidays/vacations when setting the timescale on this project. For instance, I'm away for a week from 17th Aug.
Mark Bicknell Posted August 5, 2004 Posted August 5, 2004 Sorry bit slow off the blocks with this one, had a bit of a strange week all in all, this is right up my street and would love to take part, only i wish it was a tape swap...lol or mini disc...lol - i think i can just about do this but please let us know when its all gonna start. Regards - Mark Bicknell.
Guest DeeJay Posted August 6, 2004 Posted August 6, 2004 If im not too late Id be interested, Jason form Baltomore did you go to the LA weekender? Dave Bywell (DJ)
Guest Kolla Posted August 6, 2004 Posted August 6, 2004 Up to 16 - only a few more hours to go... List so far Me / Al Dayo Dan MissGoldie Mark B Mark (VoS) Scott (RichS) Paul (P5OULH) Craig Miff Jock Jason Fraser Mark Bicknell Dave (Deejay) Nick G When list closes tonight - i'll put up timetable of when CD should be done by and the date they should be posted out to the other contributors). If Dayo is off from the 17th, basically we have to all agree either on sending out the CDs on August 16th, which gives us just over a week, OR wait until say the 26th August - which gives us nearly three weeks. Let me know what you think. Me and Al are ok with either date. Mark - what's a minidisc? LOL
Guest miff Posted August 6, 2004 Posted August 6, 2004 Aug 16th ok for me. Started putting a song list together, this is harder then what i thorght it would be, ime finding my self trying to please others not nescercerly playing my own tastes. Anybody got any requests, there i go again, also didnt realise how much has been released on cd, so if some of the tracks have been released please forgive me, one more thing can anybody tell what little ann tracks have been put out i was thinking of "The smile on your face"
Guest Kolla Posted August 6, 2004 Posted August 6, 2004 Nick is away later in August so it's looking like 16th AUGUST is goign to be a good date to complete the CD. Miff, 'Smile on your face' was on Dave Hamilton's Detroit Dancers Vol 2. (Kent). If Ady has objections i'm sure a bottle of Port will swing it )
Missgoldie Posted August 6, 2004 Posted August 6, 2004 Im away from 8th - 22nd is it possible for me to post mine after this. sorry I forgot and was just thinking "bright shiney new CDs" I'll put my hand up. OOPS
jazzyjas Posted August 6, 2004 Posted August 6, 2004 Jason form Baltomore did you go to the LA weekender? Dave Bywell (DJ) Yes, DJ I was at the Los Angeles weekender. I was the guy that told you about having Gary Levine's cassette from 1983 that you made. Still sounds good, too. Actually, your copy of Jay Traynor's "Up and Over" transferred over from that old cassette, sounded better than the one that was issued on Casino Classics V. 2 on Goldmine Soul Supply. I still have your work business card, so I'll stay in touch. Miff, Actually, yes there are some essential tracks that I need that I haven't found on CD yet: 1. Clydie King-Only the Guilty Cry-Philips 2. Hal Miller-On My Own Two Feet-Amy 3. Whispers-It Only Hurts For a Little While-Dor 4. Tony Middleton-Drifting-United Artists 5. Springfield Rifle-That's All I Really Need-Jerden (not sure if this fits the format or not) 6. Jimmy Ellis-Happy to Be-Century City 7. Ralph Graham-She Just Sits There-Up Front(or up look?)-Now, I know this just got comped, but it sounds dreadful. I'd love to hear this one a bit cleared up if possible. 8. Jimmy Barnes-Maybe Never-Sue (i might put this one on mine, but maybe someone has a cleaner copy? let me know) Any or all of those would be greatly appreciated! KTF Jason
Chalky Posted August 6, 2004 Posted August 6, 2004 How are you supposed to work that out or are you just covering yourself by saying this? What about if you own the record and have paid a lot of money for it?
Guest Dan Posted August 7, 2004 Posted August 7, 2004 I think the CD rule is well-meant but pretty unworkable. From my p-o-v, I don't have that many CDs so if I stick something on which happens to be on a CD that's just going to be the way it is! I think we can be trusted not to take stuff off CDs and claim it as our own. I'm happy to let the Soul Source Rapid Reaction Inspection Team stage a lightning raid on me house to check for breach of sanctions...
Guest Kolla Posted August 7, 2004 Posted August 7, 2004 List of contributors has now closed. Each contributor has to make 15 CDS. I've PM'd everyone on the list with full details of what to do. The CD must be completed before the (with exception of Miss Goldie) the 16th August. Date for posting your CDs to each contributor is the 16th August. I can't seem to find Paul's original post (P5OULH) - if you don't want to be included anymore, send me a PM. Cheers.
Guest Kolla Posted August 7, 2004 Posted August 7, 2004 By the way - Shute & Jordi - if you guys get your Cd burners together, I'm sure everyone will swap with you at a later date. Let us know when you're sorted.

Let us know when you're sorted. I'd really like to do this but not got much time and doubt if I could do it in your time frame, got another cd swap on the Rare Soul Forum to do too.
Mark Bicknell Posted August 7, 2004 Posted August 7, 2004 Kolla, This sounds cool to me, are we sticking to this non CD tracks only i.e only taking from original 45's format or are we going for just as much quality and variation as possible? I wanna play by the rules here but also want to put together a corking CD. Regards - Mark Bicknell
Guest Kolla Posted August 8, 2004 Posted August 8, 2004 Mark - Check your messages - sent you a PM yesterday - original 45s / Lp & EP tracks is the name of the game. I'm shaking in my boots putting the comp together. A lot of the participants are seasoned soulies and just trying to find tunes that you might not have heard is a task in itself... might have to delve into my midtempo JA soul for the surprises - Naturally - the rest is gonna be heavily influenced by my favourite club .. 6Ts )
Chalky Posted August 9, 2004 Posted August 9, 2004 Big thanks to Kolla for letting me in at the last minute, hope you all don't mind. Anyway got stuck in yesterday and they are all ready to go out :-)

Craig W Posted August 9, 2004 Posted August 9, 2004 Actually, yes there are some essential tracks that I need that I haven't found on CD yet: 5. Springfield Rifle-That's All I Really Need-Jerden (not sure if this fits the format or not) Jason I have this 45 on a Burdette 455 white label PS 45 which i think i will include on my CD because it fits in the midtempo thing nicely, but was this released before or after the Jerden 45 and which is the rarer of the two. Craig.

Guest Posted August 9, 2004 Posted August 9, 2004 well you were only on disc one other week out of 8 ;-) I still am! nothing to do with not knowing how to change the disk mind! ;-)
mischief Posted August 10, 2004 Posted August 10, 2004 Kolla put me down or am I to late? When do you want them by?

We did promise to stop the list after Chalky but if no one else objects then everyone make it 17 CD's. Midtempo is my fave so looking forward to listening.
jocko Posted August 11, 2004 Posted August 11, 2004 I dont mind either the more the merrier. Started mines last night, being a child (I wish) of the 80's Northern scene wise anyway, realised my midtempo may be abit slower than some of the things discussed, hope thats okay for most. Cheers Jock
Guest in town Mikey Posted August 11, 2004 Posted August 11, 2004 Last time I did a cd swop it cost me about £70 and I got a load of rubbish, the best cd was mine, it started with Mrs Millers lovers concerto and then puff the magic dragon....... well I liked it, bet ya all gald im not joining in with this one eh teehee And it was my favourite birthday present. Never out of my cd player.
Guest Kolla Posted August 11, 2004 Posted August 11, 2004 Just a quick note: I've PM'd all participants with a full list of the 17 addresses they have to send CDs to. Check you Soul Source InBox. If i've somehow forgotten anyone, gimme a shout. Laters
Craig W Posted August 11, 2004 Posted August 11, 2004 Kolla. It seems a little daft sticking to 20 tracks when there is more space left on the end of the cd (well the ones i am using are 80 minute) so it wont hurt to put on a few extra ones will it? Craig.
Chalky Posted August 11, 2004 Posted August 11, 2004 Kolla. It seems a little daft sticking to 20 tracks when there is more space left on the end of the cd (well the ones i am using are 80 minute) so it wont hurt to put on a few extra ones will it? Craig. 20 tracks, oops, you've got 10 bonus ones on mine ;-)
Craig W Posted August 11, 2004 Posted August 11, 2004 Sorry , just looked back and theres lots of 20s mentioned but not the amount of tracks , just got a little confused.
Guest Posted August 11, 2004 Posted August 11, 2004 Haven't got a Cd recorder, but i would loved to have joined this bash, can't we do a tape deal too?
Guest Posted August 11, 2004 Posted August 11, 2004 How about, Brett and I coupling up... deciding what we want on the CD that I will produce, and us sharing the CD's that are sent in return?
Guest Kolla Posted August 12, 2004 Posted August 12, 2004 Kolla. It seems a little daft sticking to 20 tracks when there is more space left on the end of the cd (well the ones i am using are 80 minute) so it wont hurt to put on a few extra ones will it? Craig. Craig - We didn't say to do only 20 tracks anywhere .... you can put as many on as you like on. I think i've done 26 or so... (confusion may have arisen where I used the number 20 as an example in a reply) Brett, Soulgirl... sorry kids, the list of contributors was technically closed off last Saturday. We'll let you know when the next one starts up if that's ok... God i feel so mean
Chalky Posted August 14, 2004 Posted August 14, 2004 Ok, my cds are in the post so you should get them Monday or Tuesday for those in this country. Little longer for those abroad ;-) Hope you enjoy them!
Guest Kolla Posted August 16, 2004 Posted August 16, 2004 Ours went out in the post this morning. Apologies in advance for the quality of a couple of the recordings - we need to buy a new needle
mischief Posted August 16, 2004 Posted August 16, 2004 Ok, my cds are in the post so you should get them Monday or Tuesday for those in this country. Little longer for those abroad ;-) Hope you enjoy them! Cheers Chalky got yours and nick g's this morning.. Posted all mine ten minutes ago.. any problems please let me know.. after flicking through both of yours this morning.. (not long enough to take them in) some of mine are at the top end of midtempo.. But I hope you enjoy them. cheers guy's "Sorry just read 20 tracks i've put 25 on, 5 extra to make up for the ones you really dislike..." ;-)
Nickg Posted August 16, 2004 Posted August 16, 2004 after flicking through both of yours this morning.. (not long enough to take them in) some of mine are at the top end of midtempo.. So are mine, but after changing my mind about 73 times I gave up : )) Cheers NickG
mischief Posted August 16, 2004 Posted August 16, 2004 So are mine, but after changing my mind about 73 times I gave up : )) Cheers NickG I ended up doing 3 cd's and then thinking to myself what am I doing.. Every track on there apart from the last one, i've played out. There is one track that I know is on a cd (YOU'RE FALLING IN LOVE - BETTY EVERETT), but as far as I know it's only on one CD (i'm proberly wrong). If anything at least you can listern to it in the car.
Craig W Posted August 16, 2004 Posted August 16, 2004 Craig - We didn't say to do only 20 tracks anywhere .... you can put as many on as you like on. I think i've done 26 or so... (confusion may have arisen where I used the number 20 as an example in a reply) Managed to squeeze 31 tracks on the cd in the end.Apologies for any lack in quality as i have taken all my tracks off 45s and its my first ever attempt at this sort of thing but have tried it out in my car and it sounds fine. I have also got a few of the track listings in the wrong order but you will soon work it out. It has been a labour of love but worth it. Craig.
