Guest Johnny Mack
Weekend today in this part of the world - Osama's dad has been digging up the roads again causing chaos and to top it all the motor crapped on me at a busy junction and had to get it towed - s***t happens as they say ! Been playing a mixed bunch of forgotten oldies today, all of which should be readily available for 50 quid a piece tops : Four Exceptions - A sad goodbye - Parkway Flip of the old frantic wigan spin. Totally different pace and feel. A nice midtempo group sound with a doo woppy feel. Jaye Kennedy - I'm feeling it too - UA Great beat ballad/midpacer with strong femme vocals. Love this one Barbara Mason - You better stop it - Arctic Arguably her rarest on the label. Knock out sound. Flip 'Happy Girl' is good also Estelle Levitt - til the flavor is gone - Metromedia Remember this being played when Lester Tipton was first in vogue and the Stratoliners was first aired, around 1973. Completely disappeared in the interim. GiGi and the Charmaines - Girl crazy - Columbia Arranged by Mike Terry/Groovesville music credits. May be on Columbia but is staright out of Detroit with a lavish string background and girlie chorus. Jay & Techniques - Dancin' mood - Smash A last hour Mecca spin that i've always liked and a cheapie too on the white demo. The issue is far rarer and comes complete with a nice sweet soul group sound on the flip entitled 'If I should lose you' Joyce Davis - Hello heartbreak goodbye love - Okeh Lesser known OKeh release but a great piece of Chicago mid tempo female soul Susan Rafey - Hurt so bad - Verve Outstanding uptempo version of the Little Anthony cut on Veep. Got a spare of this if anyone is interested. The Implements - Look over your shoulder - Philips No its not the Marva Hicks tune, but a great male group harmony tune with a northern feel. Love this one ! Soul shakers - Get hip to yourself - Loma Flip of the stomping Cold Letter. 'Hip' has a more 70's midtempo feel Last one from me and a real left fielder that I saw mentioned on the Forum last week and thought, hey I've got one of those somewhere. Well I found it on another label - Ultrasonic - in a lovely yellow wax just like those Jetstar demos. I've got to admit that its grown on me - been on and off the turntable all day today. Has a catchy hook line and smokey jazz club feel and moves along a touch below midtempo but has a certain 'something'. A HB Barnum production. Delorise Gibson - I got a feeling - Ultrasonic That's all for now Take care y'all John Link to comment Social source share

Guest Johnny Mack
Bettye Swann "Lonely Love" Money Hey Becky - Just dug this one out and hey, what a great sound it is ! Couple more that I've been playing : Oncoming Times - What is life without love - Turbo LP Got to rate up there with my all time faves. Knocks me over every time I play this. Superb. Thelma Jones - Souvenirs of a heartbreak - Barry Not a particularly difficult record to find but a great northern tune nonetheless. Carol Anderson - It shouldnt happen to a dog - Mid Town Another great tune from Miss Anderson. Ila Vann - You made me this way - pip What more can I say. Classic cut from the Mecca Bobby Freeman - Everything's love - Touch Catchy midtempo 70's sound Melba Moore - I got love - Mercury Starts off at a snails pace and breaks into an infectious dancer. Great record. Wales Wallace - What ever you want - Innovation II Nice piece of 70's soul which is as cheap as chips. The Strides - I can get along - MS This one has been doing the rounds for as long as I can remember. Great male vocal sound with instrumental flip. Last couple are ballads that have been fave plays over the last couple of weeks, two great slowies that are worth looking out for : September - I'll go crazy - Brunswick 55524 Think this is September Jones. Comes as a double sided demo with Caution on both sides. You need an issue to get the better track. Not expensive - seen it go on Ebay for just under $20. A tasty bit of soul ! Ernie Johnson - Honey I love you - Ronn A great ballad - the title gives away the content and style - for some unknown reason the wax on this is a marbled mauvish pink - dont know whether they are all like this, but would guess you can pick one up for a song. You will not be disappointed. Take care, John Link to comment Social source share
