Markw Posted September 14, 2005 Posted September 14, 2005 Oh dear mate. What can anyone say? Quality selection there with some very very classy sounds. Don't know where you were when this happened but used to happen to me down in Cardiff. Each to their own I guess, no right or wrong answer and all that. All you can do is lay out your stall and let the punters vote with their feet and pockets. I'd made it clear we were not going down the "classic" oldies route, though a few would always get played. Funny thing is, when I jacked in my do's some years back because the music policy just wasn't pulling them in, the very same people who had been moaning about what we played were asking why I stopped it!! Best advise I can offer mate is that old Latin saying............"Nihil illegitimati carburendum"......................."don't let the b*st*ards grind you down" LOL.

It's what I call the 'Jimmy Mack' syndrome!! Some people only want to hear records themselves consider to be oldies, If these people dont know or remember others that are playing then they think must be new records!! lol Even if you are playing at a 'handbags' type of Motown night and are playing something like 'Baby Hit & Run' you will get someone come up and say 'play some Motown mate - You got Jimmy Mack!!' Hence the syndrome!! lol Enough to make you scream!! but 'forgive them as they no not what they do!!' lol Keep doing what you are doing, that was great set! Cheers Paddy

Tomangoes Posted September 14, 2005 Posted September 14, 2005 Seen this happen loads of times. Most general venues never last because the crowd stop coming due to the music is 'too rare' or 'too poppy'. As a rule of thumb, if the dancefloor is always full you've got the right mix, but if its not it wont be long before you get deserted. The 'right mix' is always determined by the crowd, not the DJ. a GREAT DJ works the crowd at any event and is not great just because they play expensive or shit rare records. Collectors get recognition for that. 'There was a time' might be the only record that dude felt easy about dancing to etc, so something like Sam Fletcher may be totally new to him if he has been away from the scene for 20 years etc. If you have a Jill Babylove - My Way or hit the highway, attitude you will be playing to yourself eventually. At least the record he wanted is a class 'overplayed' oldie, it could have have been 'Weakspot or Youre ready now' etc. Ed

Guest miff Posted September 14, 2005 Posted September 14, 2005 As a punter rather then an expert my I put my pennys worth in to the debate. My personal opinion is, go on as you are sounds like a good mix of sounds to me, but saying that ime the guy that once I get on the dance floor finds it hard to get off and will dance away to everything and anything (badly) i am in my own world, I have come off the dance floor and heard people say whos the Div. Well its me and Bolloks to you, I have mates who feel intimadated when not listing to the same old overplayed oldies that they know so well and can dance too and know when to clap etc, etc. Just in this topic people are knocking a guy for wanting to hear There was a time,How do you hope to broaden there outlook without welcoming them into the fold. If its an oldies night then just slip a few of the not so well known tunes in It shouldnt take long before they come to except them If its Acrooss the board slip some well known tracks in just to keep people intrested and listening. You wiil never please all the people all the time As I said before you dont seem to be to far off the mark IMO
Ged Parker Posted September 14, 2005 Posted September 14, 2005 ON NEARING THE END A GUY COME UP TO ME AND SAID AND I QUOTE "COME ON THE MUSICS BEEN SH**E PUT SOME OLDIES ON LIKE... THERE WAS A TIME" IS IT ME????????????????? AFTER 33 YEARS I AM NOW SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING SELLING UP AND PACKING IT ALL IN. link Reminds me of the time I was asked 'can you play something fast these are all too slow' so doing my best to please I stuck on the Vondells. Low a behold the young lady in question didn't dance so when the track finished I promptly got on the mike and apologised for not understanding that she hadn't meant 'play something fast' what she had meant was 'play something I know' If she had asked for 'there was a time' at that venue I probably would have played it but it would have stuck out like a sore thumb with the rest of my set.
Guest Polyvelts Posted September 14, 2005 Posted September 14, 2005 You play great sounds but I do tend to agree with the previous comment, and to be honest if you're talking about played out oldies then Sam Fletcher is the most over played sound ever, ever, ever. I can hardly bear it any more even though it is brilliant, the same goes for "I'll never forget you", but I havn't heard 'I love music' spun for years ! Pure genius ! Too fast to dance to? Not for me !

caseoftyme Posted September 14, 2005 Posted September 14, 2005 Hi Thought I'd add my penny's worth Just listened to all of those tracks, all but two of them for the first time. I'm 50 years old, into Northern since I was about 15 (Wheel Sounds, Torch, early Casino) All those tracks are REALLY GREAT S O U L tunes But not (IMHO) Northern Very danceable, but I would prefer something a tad faster, obviously the chemicals must be lot weaker than when I were a lad.
