I can't remember the name of lady in charge of the wardrobe during the 60's; I've got a video with her being interviewed on it somewhere, but can't remeber where that is either!!

Was it Maxine Powell. I know she opened Motowns artist developement school and toured with the Supremes as their chaperone and was in charge of their wardrobe.

wendy Posted July 26, 2004 Author Posted July 26, 2004 thanks for help! i'm not convinced it was Maxine Powell as she already had established the finishing school when motown was starting. but i didnt know she looked after the supremes. so i'm probably wrong. again. chalky - do you think it was just HArvy Fuqua, or maybe he was in charge of the men's clothes? Forty years after the Supremes first topped the record charts on their way to worldwide fame, some of the distinctive gowns that became nearly as famous will make their debut at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, in partnership with original Supreme Mary Wilson. "Reflections: The Mary Wilson Supreme Legacy Collection," an exhibit featuring more than 50 Supremes costumes and rare memorabilia, will open at the Rock Hall on Wednesday, April 28. The exhibit celebrates the 40th anniversary of the trio's first Number One hit, "Where Did Our Love Go." This song was the first of five straight number one hits that established the Supremes as Motown's most popular act and the most successful girl group of all time. The Supremes, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, were known for their glamorous and sophisticated style with costumes that were a visual delight covered in chiffon, sequins, beads, fringe, rhinestones and feathers. The collection includes the first gown purchased by Wilson, Diana Ross and Florence Ballard when they were still known as the Primettes; a set of black velvet Bob Mackie gowns worn on the GIT on Broadway television special in 1969; outfits worn on the Supremes' television specials and featured on album covers; and those from their 1977 Farewell Performance. One set of dresses includes a loose-fitting maternity outfit worn by Wilson while she was pregnant. This exhibit will remain open through 2004.
wendy Posted July 29, 2004 Author Posted July 29, 2004 deadly! thanks karen c. hmm. bob mackie. i think he designed for Cher dolls in the 70s! and Barbie. not that i'm saying the Supremes are like dolls. but i guess he did the costume for the diana ross doll. arrgh - sorry - ranting about dolls now. thanks for the information
