All of my own personal records are bootlegs or pressings or reissues. I sold and I sell the originals and keep the cheap copies for myself to play. Whats up with that? I've had just as many originals as anyone on here, if you are a 'dealer' you just cannot afford to keep records.

I'm certain i heard Ady C play Betty Boo "Say It Isn't So" at the 100 ?, brilliant record and like Simon White says an original release on Grapevine, haven't got the 45 but i always used to hammer the old LP version when i was a young un'.

Also on Simons point about legit UK 45's, never thought there would be a problem playing/collecting these versions(i wasn't aware there was.......unless i misunderstood your point Simon), in some cases the English version is harder than it's US counterpart. (as we all know..not trying to teach the old Grandmother to suck eggs here)

By the way the columns in Manifesto of which Simon mentioned were excellent, a great background look at UK soul releases. :thumbsup:

Yes 6 fish in 7 days Biggest 21 lb common carp, Its was just too hot to fish , So we drunk the local super market dry, Oh and caught the sun

Not the best trip for fish but a good laugh all the same

No, I sold every single original I had mate, from Vicki Baines to The Gambrells, and all those lovely UK 45's :thumbsup:

The term 'demo' is misleading. We use the word 'demo' for promotion copies, but a demo strictly speaking is a copy (possibly an acetate) of something that is maybe intended for release, or so the relevant parties can hear it so further work can be done in the studio - or possibly for songwriting purposes. A promo is a finished recording sent out for promotion purposes.

Well I can think of at least one recording where you are incorrect on this point. The O'Jays 'I'll Never Forget You' on Imperial exists on vinyl as white label Demonstration copies, yellow and green promotion copies and the normal black issues.

For something to be classed as a reissue it has to have been issued once in the first place! For instance who has an original 7" of J.J. Barnes 'Sweet Sherry" or an original of Betty Boo "Say It Isn't So" (as geordiejohnson says) or Marvin Gaye "Need Someone" or Peggy Scott "You Got It All" or Archie Bell's "Harder and Harder" or Jefree's "Love Loan" ? But look up most J.J. Barnes discographies and 'Sweet Sherry" apparently doesn't exist on 45.

That's because it doesn't exist on an original 45, it's an album track only release. The 45's are bootlegs.

Sorry Dave you've lost me on The O'Jays? The wording "Demo" and "Promo" gets confused in some cases. I'm sure we've all got records that say one or the other. In those cases I beleive they are basically the same thing ?

J.J. Barnes is on a Contempo UK 45 and as far as I can work out, it's the first legal 45 release of that track. As Contempo issued the "Rare Stamps" album I see no reason to think there' anything 'bootleg' about the 45. Unless you know differently?

Strangely I see it listed as a 'reissue' or not at all in most discographies as if for some reason some people don't want to beleive it's true for some strange reason ! :thumbsup:

I think Contempo also released the JJ Barnes Sweet Sherry track on an V/A compilation LP called Dance Dance Dance. Did'nt Edwin Starr also use the same backing track for a brilliant unissued track called Has it happened to you yet? Whatever the case Sweet Sherry is a superb track , so if I played this out on the Contempo label would I be approached by the chin strokers and soul patrol and banished from the scene forever as I would for playing any other UK Contempo 45????Where do you draw the line???

Surely if peole want to play only the original out then in the case of JJ Barnes then it should be played off the Rare Stamps Album as it was when it was a big sound. Oh no, the other perrenial problem, should you play Album tracks?.

Before it really mattered, then you could play the original US release, the original UK release(as mentioned earlier, usually rarer) or the original Album track. They were all the original imprint(I'm talking about original '60s issues). They were all usually pretty rare. Nowadays if it is not the original US then it is frowned upon! When did the music stop being the main thing?

I understand the playing of US original 45s thing but what I cant work out is the playing of UK released 45s. What about the TMG series , should none of these be played, take Martha Reeves No one there which was never given a US release. And what about the UK Kent singles , dont a few DJs play these.And what about Action , original Soul city , Sue etc??? Another thing is when some top Djs are playing super rare unissued motown 45s , take Crying time what are they playing them off?

So here's the scenario- you're taking two hundred 45's to a gig. And in the strange world of Northern Soul you play from origanal first issue 7" singles unless something is album only. But you want to play JJ Barnes "Sweet Sherry" and Bobby Hutton "Lend A Hand". So do you take 198 seven inch 45's plus two two twelve inch 33.1/3 albums (which you have to carry seperately, are awkward because everything else is on seven inch and you risk dropping them in a puddle (the gigs in Manchester) and which you have to change the speed for and which don't look as nice anyway) or do you take the two tracks on the UK seven inch 45's (there is no US 45) they were issued on- the original issued 45 seven inch format.

Or do you just mp.3 the lot and send them to the club and the cleaner pops in, presses 'play' on the computer which means you don't have to be there at all and can stay in watching repeats of "The Last Of The Summer Wine" on the " Strange UK Traditions" Channel?

Personally I think the playing of LPs at an event is farcical and worse than playing a bootleg 45.Its just not right.

How can he possibly be on shaky ground??? He's referring to the legitimate 1960s Soul City release that came out at the same time (or very shortly after) the Backbeat U.S. release i.e a contemporary (for the time) original UK issue. Please explain....
