Guest Phil Richards Posted September 8, 2005 Posted September 8, 2005 Just like to announce that Studio 1 at Dudley West Midlands 23rd September will probably be the last one. The venue has had it's dancing licence restricted to 12 o'clock, which mean's no more 2 am finishes. Apparently an anonamous letter was sent ( aren't they all ) But we will be running on the 23rd Sept but only till 12 o'clock. I have also been Informed today..... that Max's soul night at essington has been cancelled due to another anonamous letter being sent, So that is 3 venues cancelled in one week. Junction 11 Studio 1 Essington would'nt you agree..... "A bit strange that" ??? On the subject of Junction 11, I have phoned Phil Turner and given him our full support in whatever he Intends to do. Phil
Mace Posted September 8, 2005 Posted September 8, 2005 Very dubious Phil. Sorry to hear it.....hope you get it sorted mate

Craig W Posted September 8, 2005 Posted September 8, 2005 Sorry to hear this Phil. Good luck with your new venue.
Guest Phil Richards Posted September 8, 2005 Posted September 8, 2005 Sorry to hear this Phil. Good luck with your new venue. link Thanks see you at the 44 club Phil
Jumpinjoan Posted September 9, 2005 Posted September 9, 2005 One letter being sent and getting a venue closed down is bad enough ...... but three letters and three clubs? Something not right here!! (i know .... i'm the queen of stating the bleeding obvious). You'll have obviously demanded to see the letters concerned and i would think have had copies made for yourselves ....... WELL I THINK YOU SHOULD POST THEM ON HERE FOR ALL TO SEE. Surely there's no law against that.

Mace Posted September 9, 2005 Posted September 9, 2005 (edited) ========== theres must be a law against vendettas! link Is this a type of scooter???? Sorry to add a bit of humour to such a serious thread, but think we all need to show these tw@ts that we won't be beaten by their c*ntish tricks Edited September 9, 2005 by Mace
Ged Parker Posted September 9, 2005 Posted September 9, 2005 ========== i agree joan theres must be a law against vendettas! link Add to these three the one at the ukrainian club in Manchester and it appears there is a pattern Under the new licensing regime letters like this will be ignored as they will be deemed "Frivolous or vexatious" the loss of a late dancing licence (PEL) at the moment is a real puzzler The venue will have its application in for it's new licence to start in November and if it isn't making any changes to its operating plan will be granted with no opportunity for objections to be heard as it will just be doing what it has always done. There is another explaination not sure what that is but it isn't an anonamous letter.
Pete S Posted September 9, 2005 Posted September 9, 2005 Just a thought. Studio One is down a cul de sac and there are only a few residential buildings, but I suppose they are free to object if there is noise at 2am in the morning, cars etc...having said that, it's off a major road and I would have thought the traffic noise goes on most of the night. So it might be a legitimate complaint from residents. Such a shame though, I was really enjoying djing there.

So it might be a legitimate complaint from residents. Such a shame though, I was really enjoying djing there. link Pete, You miss the point here. Under the new licensing regime, applications for which had to be in last month, objections can only be lodged if they directly relate to one of the four pillars of the Licensing act 2003. i.e. Prevention of Crime and Disorder, Public Safety, Protection of Children From Harm or Prevention of Public Nuisance. It is fair to say that local residcents can complain about a 'Public Nuisance' if the noise etc is excessive but under the act premesis are guaranteed, under a system called 'Grandfathering' (Don't ask me why its called that ) to get what they already have. There isn't the opportunity to hear objections it's a rubber stamping issue. Given that the venue is therefore legally guranteed to be granted what it had when it made its application (last month) come the new regime on November 24th. Why would the council who will administer the new regime and also administer public entertainment licenses seek to revoke a PEL that will be reinstated in November. I think there is more to this than meets the eye. Potentially the venue has a renewal date on its PEL that falls between now and November and has therefore chosen not to renew it. Councils are looking for a full years fees (in some cases £20,000+) even though the PEL will be obsolete come November 24th so outlets in this position have chosen not to renew and save the costs. As i said I don't know the full details but an anonamous letter doesn't quite work as an explaination particularly during this transitional period between the two licensing regimes. This is markedly different from the CIS / Ukrainian club as a anonamous letter to a committee at a club could lead them to pull an event in their own venue but losing a PEL due to an anonamous letter just doesn't happen.
Mace Posted September 9, 2005 Posted September 9, 2005 ...but under the act premesis are guaranteed, under a system called 'Grandfathering' (Don't ask me why its called that ) to get what they already have.... link It's called 'Grandfathering' as it is passed down based on previous info/restrictions etc and so named on a comparison to the idea that a Grandfather would pass his knowledge/experience etc onto his son, then his grandson etc...(if you get me drift) Maybe the Club was working outside it's original PEL restictions, especially if in a remote area....wouldn't be the first eh? A dodgy letter may have an effect on the owner/managers in such a case, especially with the new licenses being scrutinised at the present time. Just a thought like....

Such a shame though, I was really enjoying djing there. link Pete, At the last Studio 1, I was on the door when the manager came in and said to me...... Residents are complaining of noise levels with the music, have they turned the sound up, I said no.... So he went off to find Bill and complained to him. Myself and Bill went outside to check, You could'nt hear a thing out there, I actually stood on the other side of the road to listen, and beleive me you could not hear the music coming from Studio 1. Sue

Love to come and spin a few just let me know when and I then can book a meeting for the Friday at Keele Uni or one of the Staffs Uni sites. may as well let the firm pay my fuel costs link Shouldn't have told me that......won't feel as guilty if I don't pay you for your services now...

Pete S Posted September 9, 2005 Posted September 9, 2005 So are we really saying there is a conspiracy to close down the West Midlands soul nights? If so, who is behind it? The main troublemaker, mentioning no names, doesn't live in the area nowadays!
Mace Posted September 9, 2005 Posted September 9, 2005 Reminds me of the saying "old mods never pay for their crimes, in fact they never pay for anything" link Who you calling old???? As for my crimes.....perhaps they should stay locked up with my other skeletons.....far too many letters flying around just lately...
Ged Parker Posted September 9, 2005 Posted September 9, 2005 So are we really saying there is a conspiracy to close down the West Midlands soul nights? If so, who is behind it? The main troublemaker, mentioning no names, doesn't live in the area nowadays! link I'm suggesting the reverse in fact. I think that the venue owners have their own reasons for not wanting to continue nights - think they can do it themselves, don't take enough money over the bar, take too much money over the bar (if they just manage the venue and don't like work), haven't got, for whatever reason the correct licences, dont like the music, don't like the promotor, don't like the punters could be these or any other reason. Its just easy to say to a promotor we can't do them any more the council have had an anonamous letter. So no conspiracy different reasons at each venue I suspect.
Jumpinjoan Posted September 9, 2005 Posted September 9, 2005 Like Ged said ..... could be a number of different reasons why .... and i could certainly see venue owners using the "been sent an anonymous letter" as an easy way out. But if it had been me that had been told that someone had wrote a letter saying things about my club and as a result was being stopped from holding anymore nights at that venue........ i would demand to see the letter! Surely they would have to show it to me, wouldn't they?

I just wish they had put a return address and I could show them just how grateful I really was, most soulies are getting on a bit, so I put it down to forgetfulness..................Bless Edited September 9, 2005 by Chris Waterman
