I think sam and robin salter djd a fair bit. A lot of the sounds played tended to be more midtempo than before: wqbc - love me anyway, tony comer - don't give up, hari paris - you hit my love. Love to see a playlist though.

Yeah as I remember a lot of records being spun from event to event. New releases and obscurities from a competitive deejay line up. Really would like to see a list perhaps Sam is the best man to list it ??

Some of the big records were

Fluorescent Smogg, Horizon, Terry Callier, Motherfox, Arnold McCuller, Keni Burke.

Give me time and I'll remember some more.

Thought I'd bump this .. As I know a couple of the few that went to this Nighter are on here Lurking !! wicked.gif

I went more than a few times. The soul night if I remember rightly was alternative weeks to the 60s nights (which were just blinding); always ended up messy as my mate from the down the match used to work the bar (50p a round :boxing: ). Always got a few metal heads coming down from the rock night upstairs which proved amusing.

Used to get a few traveling from Scotland (Kerso, Kev Kelly etc). They also had a couple of nighters with 60s rare soul upstairs and Modern in the small room downstairs.

Sure Robin did them, Sam, Graham Ellis (?). Also remember Mick Godfrey having sales box there which i picked a few bits and bobs from.

Alternate Fridays, one week sixties and one week modern, run by Dave Raistrick and he played at both nights. As for the modern nights, attendance towards the end was patchy it has to be said but the tunes that passed through there pretty amazing and if anyone has a list it will be bloody long.

I'm pretty sure Adam did the first few then Robin started playing and I recall Jean Terrell-No Limit and Arnold MCculler as big tunes but maybe because Robins brother would Jazz it up (kind of )on the floor for those two!. Graeme Ellis did start dj'ing after Robin along with regulars Sam and Arthur, I remember many a bargain, as it turned out, being bought there sadly not still got em all.

Nina Simone Touching and Caring, Tab Walton, THe Holt Brothers,Family of Eve was spun by Arthur for a little while, rememeber Gordon from Scotland who used to come to every session religiously with Kev Kelly buying this (fam of eve) and we played it over and over back at my flat, he wrote "the best fu#ck#ng record ever" across the paper sleeve. Regulars from Lincoln, Worksop, Selby, Derby, Scotland and Notts every week at the Modern Do's and of course Soul Frank from Southampton who has been discussed before on here.

Best place for playlist probably old Blackbeats sure it was written about in there and Sammy Salter also did a review in Echoes one week.

Audio first made big there I would say, Glenda Mcleod, Betty Cee, Modernique, James Cobbin, Lonnie Hill.

Think there were only 2 nighters, Tom Jackson came down and played at one which brought down the folk Byrney mentions, Kerso, Ji G, Stevie, John and Co.

Upstairs for every Friday session was the legendary Rock City Rock Night and now and again someone would stumble into the modern do from upstairs, one night a punk appeared , full mohican etc..stood there for 5 minutes then got on an empty dancefloor all alone and to something like Rideout took himself back to the Mecca or somehwere and danced like nobody's business for 5 minutes.

I'll stop now rolleyes.gif

forgot to say thay Red Stripe was 50p a can and I think Jonathon was general manager at Rock City at the time which helped with the nighters and stretching out the longevity of the modern night.

I went to a few alldayers at Rock City in the mid 80's.I saw Cameo,Sharon Redd.Mantronix.Chris Hill and the likes were the dj's.The alldayer that featured Cameo nearly turned into a riot 'Single Life' had charted the previous week, and everyman and his dog turned up.

I never did get to the Modern nights there though

Pete

Forgot to mention the Jazz room.Them Jazz dancers were something else.

I remember going there with my mate Pete Wickham & we were both forced to buy drugs from the Hells Angels that were doing the security @ the time whistling.gif .....& later being told by the Same Hells Angels later that evening when complaining that the gear was shit, ' What The f*** You Going To Do About It ? ? ? ? ' as you can guess We left quietly :boxing:

Can remember a few nights down there, strange pairing with the metalheads. Have a memory of one of the hairies coming down and taking the piss and someone giving him a slap :boxing: But seem to remember one night with the big room upstairs being a rap / hip hop night. Can not for the life of me remember any tunes unique to rock city. Doh!

Following on from that Jonathon ran House all dayers at Rock City with the likes of Marshall Jefferson and Frankie Knuckles making the trip from the States. This was way before House hit it big in the UK (86 - 87?)

We went to an all-niter there in the 80's.

There was a little room downstairs that was used for a warm up session before the room upstairs was available.

The night we were there, the upstairs party was a "Rocky Horror Show"...... ohmy.gif

We all had to use the same toilets, very scarey.....

I think a few even stayed behind afterwards for the all-niter.

Bloody lovely big venue.

Can't name one record played all night, never could in them days..... :boxing: ....

They must have been ok, coz I never came off the dance floor...

Some would have us belive that the soul scene in the 80s was on its arse; but one week you've got Robin Sam, Adam et al; the next you'd have Gary Rushbrook, Jim Wensiora ETC. All playing top end new discoveries. What an era

Dave Raistrick here!

Great to read all the comments re the fond memories and great nights we had back in the mid 80's at Nottingham's Rock City.

As the promoter of the event it's fantastic that some 20 years on a lot of the tunes first spun at the Rock are now considered to be Modern Soul classics.

Along with myself, Sam, Arthur, Adam, Robin and Graeme we provided a very upfront and forward looking playlist. Many of the tunes were sourced from either John Anderson at Soul Bowl or from myself and my then company, Soul-Utions, based in Grantham.

As the interest in this period of music is currently enjoying a new lease of life, you may be interested to know that later this year (November 30th & December 1st) we are holding a two day special at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Skegness, billed as "Upfront on the Seafront", which also incorporates a Rock City reunion.

DJ's enlisted include Rock City originals Soul Sam, Arthur Fenn, Dave Raistrick, plus Adam (TBC). Also Paul Phillips (Solar Radio), Simon M (Soul Select) plus other current Modern Soul spinners.

For more info go to www.starsandstripesimports.com

Looking forward to hearing from the old Rock City crowd and seeing you all here in Skeggy later this year!!!!

Thanks for that Dave . so anything from Ronnie Barnes , C.Coulter , Ice ( Arthur has a copy now ) Larom Baker , BJB and many many more Modern type tunes !

This takes me back a good few years, tunes I remember from Rock City were Al Mason Good lovin, Side Show Lonely Girl,Target Give One more chance and the door staff being a chapter of the Hell's Angels.

For the soul nights we could be back in Bellshill for 6.30am which was good going.

A great night with a great bunch of people who always made us welcome and suberb tunes played.

Good to see you mastered the attachments Neil remember the journey down in a van with Davie and Kerso in great form for the nighter you posted. What year was that ? I'm guessing 86 or 87.

I will have to have a word with him He needs to get out more.

Golf! he was trying to show me his swing at a mates and nearly decapitated both of us and ruined a perfectly good wig!.

And it would be blinding if he did get a spot playing his current jazzy stuff.

Oi Simon, don't remind me - I'm gonna start looking out for some stuff I let go - I still wake up in a cold sweat thinking about them some times....especially Florence Trapp/Troy Johnson/Satin/Hugh Boynton/Sammy Gaha/Fab Playmates/Pro-Fascination etc ....either that or it's Leicester City's current form keeping me awake (oh...and the golf swing...with apologies to Adam G...See above!)

I was telling Mike Godfrey about this the other week - he said there were only 25 that used to go and half are dead...

Seriously I hope it's a great success, I told Dave R I can't commit to doing it but will see nearer the time if I can get down for part of it. Skegness is so bracing...
