:lol:biggrin.gif Afternoon of the Rhino if I remember used to be played quite closely with Night of the wolf, at I think, Bradford (Queens Hall) Many, many years ago, and I used to get the two mixed up

Not into instrumentals too much, as I prefer a good old heartbreaking vocal..... but they do sound like TV show themes from the 7ts, bet they would have been used in the "love boat" at sometime or other or what was that other programme, had that little guy on it Tatoo who said "the plane, the plane" :wicked::unsure:

=================================

whats up with y'all!!!!!!1

i love all the instrumentals and have recently been playing 'siamese cat' on beacon

Posted

You lot never cease to amaze me. Afternoon Of The Rhino was THE northern instrumental, it's still one of the best ever.

link

Your forgetting Pete, these tunes were popular at Wigan so they must be crap

Posted

Of course!

Sparked by jealousy at being born to late you reckon?

link

Well you had to be there to really understand the impact some of this stuff had.Its easy to look back now and say its rubbish but I loved dancing to that stuff when I was 16 or whatever, buts its trendy to knock stuff these days IMO

Sadly quite a few people don't like to admit to liking this sort of stuff as they have grown up into chin stroking rarebods

It was meant to be a bit of fun and not to be taken too seriously.

Infact the idea was was insitgated by an old Wiganite!!!!

oh come on!

these instrumentals are awful.

Lets leave them in the past along with Jimmy Tarbuck, Morris Marinas, Vesta curries and kipper ties.

but they do sound like TV show themes from the 7ts

Probably because a good few of them were............well, at least Mike Vickers - "On The Brink" was the theme for BBC's Play For Today or Armchair Theatre series.........in the 6ts........not the 7ts......DOH!! Anyway, here's my selection for this revisited instrumental theme:-

1. Al De Lory - Right On...........corking cool, jazzy dancer

2. Phil Coulter - Good Thing Going...............cheesey retake of Cast Your Fate To The Wind but brings back fond memories

3. Willie Mitchell - The Champion..........say no more!

4. Robert Walker & The Soul Strings - Stick To Me.............superb, cool dance 45

I'll admit to liking them as an aged chin stroking rarebod

Probably true, and I'm sure 'they' meddle with my anti-paranoia medication too!

Heard an interesting phrase recently used to describe these "purists" who like to knock......

"Right-Wing Soulies"

Here you are then - the instrumental of Exus Trek is a hundred times better than the vocal version.

not better than the vocal imo but its an excellent instrumental

:D Don't quite get this one. I would have thought the other way round would have been more accurate: "left wing soullies". Being that the right wing are more conservative and traditional and opposed to change and the left are more progressive. :D:yes::D Where's my fall out shelter.

Fair point if you accept that the left are more progressive :D , but I think it was meant as a comment on lack of tolerance and a propensity to "influence" what others do/listen to :D

Is there room for me in that shelter?:P

I've got the Mystic Moods, it's not very good.  Baltimore Ohio thing better.

This kind of comment keeps coming up on these forums about the 'bad old days' and some of the crap that was played. In fact the VAST majority of Northern Soul fans loved these 'Instrumental Dancers' and you could not get on the dance floors when they were played because of the popularity.

Dont forget in the mid 70s the scene was driven by dancers, usually teenagers who could and would dance all night and the faster the beat the better.

The scene then was about looking good in made to measures, being able to dance, and generally 'show off'.

Ton of Dynamite, as an example has no soul content but was highly regarded if you had the stamina to get out on the floor. Its different now with the 'soul' content overiding the 'northern' element for various reasons but they were great times that have a place in history, warts and all.

Going for a lay down now me backs gone doing a backdrop!!!!!!!!!!

Well said, the young people on the scene today would, if transported back in time be considered to be old people.Northern Soul isn't really soul anyway, the beat was always more important than the soul . I know that todays scene is more soulful, shall we say but I don't see why people have to continually knock what has gone.

I listen to all sorts of stuff and attend all sorts of venues from oldies to rare soul and enjoy them all for what they are.

I infact wish I was old enough to have done to the Torch and wheel and it wouldn't enter my head to diss the music played at such venues or at that time in history.
