I have just been contacted by Phil Turner and have been given the very sad news that Junction 11 soul club has held its last event there as they have lost the venue.

This is a big blow as it was one of the countries top nights.

Click on the website for the official announcement.

Words fail me  whistling.gif What is the scene coming to that new promotors would even think of highjacking a venue like this. It makes me very sad for the scene  :P

link

Who are the new promotors for this venue then? I did read it but not sure who they mean, any clues anyone? :P

Have just read the reasons behind this and feel disgusted that they should be treated this way. Have always heard nothing but great things about junction 11 and to be stabbed in the back like this, by the management, is appaling! We will have to wait and see if it continues as a soul venue or if management have another music night in mind because if its continuing as a soul night then it's very brave soulies that are prepared to endorse this action by running the night!!!!! As a promoter I know what it like trying to get punters through the door to pay for the event and to spend money at the bar and its a hard thankless job and I feel, in the current climate of too many venues and to few punters, this may not be the last closure we see. Good luck in the new venue guys.

The soul world aint that big is it..With forums like this we can let each other know of any bad apples out there and keep away from them..We can't name names on here but can pm/email each other...Can't let the bully boys win or that will be the death of this scene...These people can't have a love for music/people like we do or they would not behave in such a way, would they :P ..Don't know anything about the junction 11 takeover but i'm sure we will in the next few days...

Shocking news really shocking, another nail in the Northern Soul coffin, this is dirty tricks tatics which beggers belief, makes you feel a little ashamed to be part of a scene that has people within it's ranks that will jump on and crush others, it's a real sad day in my book and just another reason to think why bother?

I hope it's not anybody i know because i'll tell them exactly what i think.

I read this thread and then the Edward Hamilton boot on ebay thread and feel the scene has changed a great deal in the last two years or so. I can remember a time when you could be stuck hundreds of miles from home (Yate for me on one occassion) and someone would look out for you offer you a bed, a lift a loan basically anything to help. These people are still around but there are more and more willing to take advantage. Where will it end? Not sure I want to be around to find out. whistling.gif

Here, here Mark, Never got to junction 11, but heard that it was a cracking venue. I really do hope that whatever and whoever has taken this over fails miserably and that the the owners of the old venue loose lots of money..

Don't worry mate..The good guys are still a plenty and the fight back will show these fu"kers that they can't just jump in and do what they want,or can they :P Its like Germany in the 30s..People sit back and let Hitler and his goons do what they want...Then when the shit hits the fan its too late, they have too much power and they want to rule the world and not share it with anyone..I once read somewhere that good wins over evil but looking at the world i do wonder

Just been on the website and read about the shennigans.

A venue is just a venue, it's the people and the music and the ethos behind it all that will always be the heart of your night, so best of luck to you Gary, John and Phil - with all your future promotions.

Methinks it will backfire on whoever plans to take over - there's a far greater loyalty and desire to see people "do the right thing" than they realise.

I've heard too many stories lately of venue managers treating promoters like shit whistling.gif Perhaps it's time for promoters to ask for clauses in the contracts that stop this carpetbagging.

Ged, You are not alone believe me mate, more and more of us are feeling like this, i really have no drive, commitment or passion to even leave the house to be honest, it's not that much fun anymore, the music is still the best in the world and that will never change for me but as you pointed out Ged times have infact changed and for the worse, it's so sad that this otherwise pure music is being tarnished, sometimes you have to walk away and bite your bottom lip mate, but to be honest enough is enough, this scene has been a huge part of our lives yet i'm full of anger at many aspects of it, it's based on music, strip it all down and it was there at the scenes inception and it will be there at the end, it's this circus bandwaggon that perpetuates the side of the scene which i hate.

I spoke to Phil Turner yesterday and its looks like one of the security staff is behind this, I have let Phil know that I will not give any future bookings to any DJ who works for any furture promotions at this venue.

They had a meeting on Saturday night to let their members know what was going on and they have had very good responce so I think this new mob will learn a costly lesson very qucikly.

The owners of the venue who know very little about soul music have decided to run the venue themselves and cut out the middlemen. The venue is effectivly finished.

I still like to think that the majority of us out there are in it for the right reasons and that the bad-uns are only a tiny minority...

The people that did this will not succeed..... ranting_1.gif

Good point Alison about the contracts...We have one in place for a monthly event and its the best way..Then the owners can't just up the price or try and replace you without a few months notice..That would give you time to tell the members/punters about the changes and find another location if you wish..A lot of time and effort goes into promoting an event, sometimes with no profit and lots of stress,l wish the boys at Junction 11 all the best and will pass on details of who is doing them over if i find out..Lets hope with the power of email/forums etc that thousands of people can be told and people stay well clear of these people..

Northern Soul has always had its grapevine.

In the t'internet age, its a million times quicker.

Instead of 20 phone calls to mates all making 20 of their own phone calls, we now just need one post on a message board to hear about stuff like this happening, and we can really hurt the guilty parties by not attending their events.

Its an ill wind and hopefully a thread like this will be a warning to anyone else thinking of doing something similar.

Good luck to the junction 11 guys and girls, lets hope any new venue turns out to be even better than the old one.

I think it is fun still Mark especially for the "not so big" venues that are around the place, its about keeping it real and what its about, not making vast amounts of money. Corporate companies loose sight of that concentrating on the profit side of it, whereas the smaller venues tend to concentrate on the music and the atmosphere (as it should be) But this sort of thing that has happened to Junction 11 is deplorable, and the unwritten rules have been broken on this one...

If you all read the thread more carefully you will see that Craig W clearly stated that it was the venue owners who are to continue the events. Not another promoter.

Mark, I can remember when I used to be out at at least three venues and sometimes four or five over a weekend and that isn't that long ago. I haven't ventured out since Soul or Nothing and only did one venue that weekend.

Anyway back to the situation at Junction 11 isn't this the same as happened to George Hunt? the owners of the venue thinking they could do better? Not sure how that is panning out now.

It's the way of the soul scene these days I'm afraid, both northern and modern, lots of people want to be a 'somebody' and there's always somebody who thinks they can promote and run a venue better or DJ better though the truth is that the majority can't - that's why there's so many gigs on and it's all so watered down. There's only a limited amount of people to go round after all. ranting_1.gif

Very astute post. Whilst this is clearly a repulsive bit of shenanigans, the fact remains that the internet has ensured such actions are exposed quickly and affectively. That is a positive aspect. In the past decades, this type of thing would have taken weeks to circulate via the gossip Grapevine and people were easier able to conduct their shameless profiteering and shoddy scams.

Much harder to con older and wiser heads nowadays. But every Music scene will always be exploited commercially and selfishly. Great Art has always been a victim of greed and abuse and the purity of this music can offer little or no protection to such aspects.

Name and shame'em, I say. If I knew their identity I would have no hesitation in naming them. What are they going to do about it?
