Simsy Posted September 3, 2005 Posted September 3, 2005 Does anyone know exactly what records they've got and how much they're worth? My records are covered by my household contents policy with More Than (a woman ). I say they're covered, but god forbid there was a fire or a break in (unlikely a thief would want to nick shitty old soul records), (iho). But how many of us have £50/£100/£150 etc in the top right hand corner of the sleeve? So you never know. My concern is that during conversations with More Than on this subject they commented that an Elvis collection for example was easier to quantify and therefore reach a settlement on, in the unlikely event of incident. I did 'key' more than half of my collection into a database with approximate values etc. Then I outed the Mac, got a pc and have done dick about updating it. I thought keeping track of what I've got would be wise and had the notion of maybe panning a camcorder over pricey bits for authenticity and proof basically. Yet to get around to that to though. Hearteningly, Ben Summers once told me he got paid out seven grand for a box of LP's. Ben's a television producer and is insured up the ass. What about the rest of us? What have you lot got in place and what are your thoughts on the subject?
Chalky Posted September 3, 2005 Posted September 3, 2005 In the event of a claim you would more than likely have to prove what you have lost and have a couple of independant valuations. Fine agreeing verbally but wait till the crunch comes, touch wood it never will. I know most insurance companies now want photographic proof and a written valuation from an independant source.
Simsy Posted September 3, 2005 Author Posted September 3, 2005 Two years ago I was burgled and all that were 2500 records 6 x 400 dj casess and album cases. Its becoming quite a frequent thing up in Yorkshire that people are being burgled for their tunes i was told off the police I wasn't the first in the area. The thieves left a brand new lab top and other very nickable items, my tunes were stolen to order said the police thought. I'd been collecting since I was 14 and had amased a huge amount of records but all of my prized ones were in my cases. I was told I was probably followed home from a venue and that It is not unknown for people to be followed from (For example and Im not calling anyone in the north west a thief) say the North west to somewhere like leicester if the pay day is going to be big. The same day another guy was burgled near me and a few weeks later a guy about 14 miles away Same thing (white Transit on the drive) only choones taken. My Insurance did not pay up (should have been covered under a collectors insurance I was told and hadn't declared the full value???? how easy is that these days with prices changing by the minute) I also should have documented my tunes and where possible photograped everyone for ID later in case of a burglary ..nowthey tell me..PLEEEEase how do you do that after Nigh on 26 years collecting. I now dont discuss my collection to any but my closest friends and are anxcious to know whos watching when I buy at venues. paranoid ...absolutely the price of vinyl is such that its a thieves paradise. and I make sure my box is locked when I dj and no one but no one browses my box any more. Let me tell you Ive not slept properly since and my house is like a fortress and thats why Ive not said where in this text I live suffice to say Yorkshires all you need to know. link

Simsy Posted September 4, 2005 Author Posted September 4, 2005 I know insurance is about as interesting as whale shit, but asked geordie johnson about the serious effects of losing a sh*t load of records. I wonder how many members/collectors/dj's have full documentation with pic's & valuations. I'm thinking you could count em on the fingers of one finger!
Guest Baz Posted September 4, 2005 Posted September 4, 2005 I know most insurance companies now want photographic proof and a written valuation from an independant source. link I've herd that to! Would Manships or Tim browns guide be a valid independant source But then again they could turn round and say well its only a guide not written 'law' Have herd about people steeling records to order, Smiggy from Liec's got robbed some time back, couldnt beleve it when he told me about it must be heart wrenching
