Hi all,

Anyone remember this one?

April or May 1984, I attended what must have been the countries first modern all niter at the Stafford Top of the World. There wasn't that many people there and it was held in the smaller room at the top. My memories are vague but I do remember this -

Terri Wells - I'll Be Around was played at least 3 times

Richard Searling and Soul Sam were 2 of the DJs

I caught the train up from Chippenham and travelled back part of the way with a guy called Soulful Frank (not his ral name and from Southampton I think)

I also remember it being a pretty good night - anyone else there who could fill in the gaps. What else was played? Who else was on the bill?

Cheers

Steve.

Steve, I was at this one with a lot of the regulars from Loughborough/Derby. I remember Richard and Dave Thorley being on in particular. Also think Adam may have been on. Possibly Pat Brady too. I've actually got a couple of photos from this do somewhere.

It was'nt the first 100%Modern Soul All Niter though. That was probably at Rotherham Tiffs or Sheffield Tiffs - both rooms circa '80/'81 with Sam,Arthur,Mario. Though 100% Modern All Dayers previous to these at Snaith (well heading towards 100 %) and Birmingham Locarno.

I also remember Soul Frank well!

Were you at the wheels of steel Robster or does it predate your era

John, this sounds daft but i can't honestly remember. Thats why I did'nt mention it in my post. Part of me thinks me and Ady connolly did it, another part of me thinks me and Adam did it - but I really dunno! I had started doing a few bits by this time. Can remember other things about the All Niter so probably not. Seem to remember Richard (or Pat) had been playing a white test press of James Walsh as "Gypsy" "Cos Its You girl" for some time (no other info on label) and we were able to tell him the proper artist detail.

Soul Frank was definately from Southampton - he used to travel on his own to Sam and Arthur's do's circa '81. Think he used to be ex-Yate as well. He used to like his soul and his dancing. Steve G will remember him.

Seem to remember another thread a while back that mentioned Soul Frank, If Stephen "Budgie" Burgess is reading this he would know but i guess he won't say as he's a shy old lurker on here

In fact Ali has just this minute said that SF rang her a couple of weeks ago asking about a do or a mag or something ( :D her memory is as bad as mine  )

Yes Steve, Rebels was earlier (and great niters despite dodgy system) but seem to remember new 60's also played). Do you remember a one off Niter at "Happy Nites" Sheffield? That may have been before Shef Tiffs. 100% Modern - remember Sam heavily playing Chuck Simmons "Am I Grooving You".

Cant remember happy nights , but Sam had a do at Turn Ups at Nether Edge, which was 100% modern.

Ist Rebels was 100% modern, but RS played his sixties newies at the subsequent ones.

Wasn't that the Hawaian Suite or something Kenny? Something tropical anyway.

Sam also had modern nights at Take Two in Sheffield.

Not sure if it's one of those on Darran's flyer Steve but do remember going to Rebels where it was quite "strange" watching all the "rockers" stumble out pissed up wondering what we were all doing stood outside shivering waiting to go in with hodalls and all at gone 2am in the morning....

Vivid memory of the "quelching" carpet from the previous events "drinkers" as you walked towards the dance floor.... pile of talc to soak most off your shoes then "extra" on the floor so you didn't stick....

All in all a very different experience :D ....

Is this the Fusion you are talking about Kenny? If so it was either the upstairs room of what is now the Winding Wheel, next door was the Odeon cinema or it was just across the road. Sure it was the first one, that I am sure had all sorts of scoffolding, poles on the dance floor, fook knows why...... biggrin.gif:D

I dj'd at the all the Rebels nights, which except for Richards 60's one off and a few 60's played by Poke and myself it was all modern soul (a la Sam and Arthur), with the exception of the one Dave Withers did.

I'm sure the oldies night never happened, as RS and Bernie Golding lost heavily on one night and called it a day there.

He is alive and well, still living in Soton. Reason he used to take the train up was he hated paying the £3 for the round trip to Wigan or wherever. Used to work on the railways and used his free pass to get everywhere.

Rebels was great - think Gary Rushbrooke also DJed at one as well - those hippies falling down the stairs before we were let in, being sick etc....a memory that will always be with me.

I also liked the All Dayer that BG and RS did - two rooms one J/F one Modern.
