i feel between us all all asking the DJ to play it ,we can make this happen

Good luck everybody :)

SKI-ING IN THE SNOW

Verse 1

Days are growing colder, snow's a fallin upon the hill.

I gotta get my gear out ready for the winter's chill

You know my wood pickin' fire's gonna fasten me down,

And the wood that I chop that's really gonna run on down.

Chorus

Run on down, ski-ing in the snow

In the up down ski-ing in the snow

And that night we all stayed warm in the cabin below,

Though we've been buried my love,

There Loss Is Greater I know.

( with my baby, good lookin' baby)

Verse 2

And did you see the snow man with a couple of skiers all around,

Movin' down the mountain everybody's putting me down.

(all around up and down, up and down)

You know I got to go climb to the top of the hill,

And make it all the way down beside of her still.

Chorus

Run on down, ski-ing in the snow

In the up down ski-ing in the snow

And that night we all stayed warm in the cabin below,

Though we've been buried my love,

There Loss Is Greater I know.

( with my baby, good lookin' baby)

With that girl that I love tellin' me she loves me so,

And im a winter fool, let her go into his arms

(with my baby good lookin' baby)

Down, ski-ing in the snow

Run on down ski-ing in the snow

Run on down ski-ing in the snow (repeat to fade)

one more time please :D

there's a simple & easy explanation as to the immense popularity of this record.

torch goers deeply related to the sentiments expressed in the song's lyrics. the winter's chill of the 3 day week, & especially the 'gonna get my gear out' part.

as plain as the nose on yer face really.

next record?

The invitations and sking in the snow is a true classic, alot, lot lot better than the commercial wigans ovation one, but it did get a few new young faces into the northern scene way back then and quite a few of those faces are still here  So dont be too harsh on the feather cut, spencer, polyveldt wearing times guys... :)

Dont see what all the fuss is about certain records from another time and place that at the time were very relevant to the scene.I am quite sure that people around at the time when sits was a regular spin would be just as horrified at some of the shite being played[especialy by the soul police]today as soul.

I was going to reply in kind, but i really can't stoop as low as you Mr Toiler.

Hopefully people will read your comments and see what a condescending, pathetic individual you are (especially those who have never heard me DJ).  I just think it sad; any more of this and i may start to feel sorry for you. (and i do have the boot of SITS; so thats another that will fit nicely in my playbox. So ner ner)

P.S SITC next wednesday; you coming out for a beer?

I'll be there just to see how late you turn up this time. You won't be bringing that dreadful woman with you though, will you?

I cannot believe that you would play a boot of SITS, but I've just heard that your copy of Footsee is a dub too.

yeah but no but yeah but...because we might have danced to it as kids, does not a good record maketh. We also danced to the Javells etc as young things in youth clubs before realising that we were being duped.

The sands of time have been particularly cruel to SITS, and whilst perfectly acceptable to 14 year olds getting into NS and being influenced by not much older DJ's, with the benefit of 30 years experience, it now sounds truly dreadful (as does the Reflections, as does August & Deneen). Also didn't the Beach Girls cover SITS long before Wigans Novation? Ahem! I rest my case.

I like "What's wrong with me baby" and view it as something of a minor classic, but SITS is dreadful west coast sub pop drivel aimed at the Californian surfing crowd.

Have to say I still like this record the horns are fantastic. I do recognise though that it has had its day but then so have loads of other things that still get hammered at oldies nights why should this be any different. As for someone buying it well I've paid big money for stuff some (most  ) people dont like. Its my money :P (well it's the bank managers really but who's counting :shhh: )

if august & deneen is an awful pop record, it was so damned right at the time. I happen to think they're black as well, in spite of the spurious sonny & cher rumours. soul sam used to thrash it to death in 1975. the record is a genuine classic in my opinion, much as the jewels is, a record also derided by some today. with the benefit of hindsight, it's so easy to knock these sounds, and by the way, I consider myself at least a part-time member of the soul police. surveillance/control is paramount, otherwise this would be the musical equivalent of fallujah. a good debate though...

Bet he wouldn't touch it now.

Horrible naff cabaret stomper with no soul content.

link

he probably wouldn't, but for very different reasons.

I do beg to differ on the soul content though. especially the 'children & laughter' line, his voice soars. the vibraphone, the clarion call intro, it's pure northern soul, if such a thing exists.

a little debate I found elsewhere on the net....

Ratso 10 May 2005 10:39:37 [ permanent link ]    I joined August & Deneen ("and the Long Island Sound") as bass guitarist

around 1972. We were a New England band, made up of August & Deneen on

vocals, 3 horn players, and 3 rhythm section players. The song "We Go

Together" was recorded along with 2 other tunes at the Bell Studios in New

York under the ABC label, around 1973. The other 2 songs were "I'd Rather

Be With You" (which was supposed to be the "A" side of the 45 with "We Go

Together"), and "Can't Get You Out of My Head". The latter song was not

released, and subsequently handed over to Mama Cass Elliot. In a

brilliant move by ABC Records, "We Go Together" was released the same day

as ABC's cover of "Eleanor Rigby" by Ray Charles. With such competition

from their own label, August & Deneen were popular only in Warwick and

Providence, Rhode Island, and were relegated to become obscure Northern

Soul artists from then on.

My nickname, "Ratso", was bestowed upon me by August, who somehow thought

I reminded him of Dustin Hoffman's character.

OOps. I spoke with Deneen and I need to post a correction. The recording session actually occurred around 1967. The event that took place around 1973 was August & Deneen's year-long relocation to Las Vegas. After that, they returned to the East Coast. Sorry if this messses anybody up.

It was certainly around late 70s, but it was only ever played VERY occasionaly.

My recollection is that it was despised by soulies in the late 70 for being associated with N/soul.

One of the worst records ever, then & now.

Its not worth anything. The guy buying it has more money than sense.

Yep SITS. I wouldn't give a penny for it on the basis that the lyrics are trite & the record is shite.

I would not have this record in my house. It epitomises all that WAS wrong with n/soul.

I can't believe what I'm reading here.

When I first started hearing northern records at the youth club, this was a monster, just pressed on the OOTP label (so us 13/14 year olds could hear it) and an absolute monster tune. Kitchen sink production, great vocal, what more do you lot want?

It emphasises all that was GREAT about Northern Soul.

Link to comment

I can't understand why so many are against this tune. Maybe it's because i'm from Sweden and has never heard it out on a club. The lyrics are rediculous but so has a lot of other records that are played, if you just take the time to listen. They are just not that obvious.

It's not a record that I would buy but at least it has a great dance beat wich is more than many other records played on the scene today.

all conflicts go through a period of revisionism. there are those that like to rewrite history because they are uncomfortable with certain elements of their past, or for much darker reasons, they find they can manipulate it suit their present needs. NS is hardly exempt from this. I must admit to dancing to phil coulter's 'a good thing going' in 1978 when it was packing floors across the land. today, I consider the record to be a veritable crock of horse excrement today, but it's part & parcel of the scene, just as SITS is & I wouldn't dream, therefore, of editing out phil coulter's face from the family photo stalin style. so let's hear it for irish phil!! & the damned barbed wire gets higher & higher...
