Guest chorleybloke Posted August 27, 2005 Posted August 27, 2005 Can you imagine flipping through a box of loose 45s you bought at a garage sale & finding this? 4762088968 Think I would have soiled my keks. Never even knew this existed, thought it was demo-only like Sam Williams (or could there be a Tower issue?) Wonder if its possible to establish the exact number of rarities such as these that were ever produced? Drooling Pete Down Under

Drooling Pete Down Under link Pete, Can confirm there is an issue/stock of Gene Toones, i had it way back bought for £40.00 from a good friend of mine Mark White around early mid 80's later sold it for £300.00 to Carl Fortnum think he still has it? as far as i am aware i think there are possible 2/3 known issues out there so rare as rocking horse droppings mate, thought i did well way back sold it around 1990, not paper label either printed straight onto the vinyl like Maxx stuff for example - deep navy blue label, lettering in silver which was worn away on my copy also had seen better days condition wise, slight noise, possible styrene can't remember but can confirm a very hard record to find, possibly add another zero to my selling price, just one of many records i have had through my hands over the years, still all part of the game.....well that's what i tell myself anyway...lol Empires, Imperial C's, Eric Mercury.......I'll get my coat. Regards - Mark Bicknell.

Guest Posted August 27, 2005 Posted August 27, 2005 (edited) I am also quite sure there was another issue on ebay quite recently, anyone confirm? There was also definitely a M- issue copy sold by someone on this form a couple of months back. Edited August 27, 2005 by Guest

Guest Posted August 27, 2005 Posted August 27, 2005 I knew I wasn't imagining it Christian Thought there was one on a forum too but as wasn't too sure didn't mention link The one on the forum went for a lot (don't recall exact amount though), obviously, but could perhaps have fetched more had it been sold elsewhere. It was sold by an american guy who is a good seller in my experience.
Chalky Posted August 27, 2005 Posted August 27, 2005 asked the seller for a better scan and here's what he sent back.....
Guest chorleybloke Posted August 28, 2005 Posted August 28, 2005 asked the seller for a better scan and here's what he sent back..... link I got an MP3 of the first minute & the quality is pretty ordinary - quite audible bacon frying sound throughout. Cheers Pete
Guest Posted September 1, 2005 Posted September 1, 2005 I am also quite sure there was another issue on ebay quite recently, anyone confirm? There was also definitely a M- issue copy sold by someone on this form a couple of months back. link I am pretty sure those were promotional copies as the records you are speaking of popped up when I was doing my research on the stock copy I found a couple of months ago. The picture was certainly of a different looking label than the stock copy. I also have appreciated this forum, which I found by luck by Googling on Gene Toones, as it helped answer questions I had about authenticity. I do have a question that I would hope the people on this board will answer for me. Is having the stock copy with Northern Soul records a significant plus over a promotional copy? I know in the record collecting I have done over the years the promos of rock records are likely more valuable because they are more rare than the stock copy. In this case it seems to be the opposite, the stock copy is rarer than the promotional although I would guess that the promotional is likely to be in better shape than a stock copy. Again, thanks for your forum and any answer I may receive. Respectfully, Rick

Again, thanks for your forum and any answer I may receive. There are no firm and fast rules here only that whatever is the rarer is the more desirable!!! There is a slight trend in that any thing rare on demo on the large non-independent labels (RCA, Capitol, etc), where a issue exists, they tend to be significantly more scarce!
Gasher Posted September 1, 2005 Posted September 1, 2005 a short answer is MostOR THE MAJORITY OF N/SOUL records come in both issues and demos however some smaller labels may only have ever put a record on to demo/promo and not issued them at all.Or in this case demos have been found but very few Issues are known to exist obviously due to its commercial failure. there are numerous N/Soul tracks which have the same plight demo being the most common version..issues rarer. But not every record is rarer on issue than demo..It works both ways. This just so happens to be ONE OF THE RARE ISSUES...RARELY SEEN COMPARED TO THE AMOUNT OF DEMOS WHICH TOO ARE GENUINELY RARE. HOPE THIS HELPS,,,THE GASHER

Guest Posted September 1, 2005 Posted September 1, 2005 Thanks a lot! You guys have a really great forum and are very helpful! Respectfully, Rick link Just one more thing to add, I had never really been exposed to Northern Soul before but I can see why this is considered to be a desirable record. The more I hear the song the more I like it. I find myself humming it through the day. I should pay attention to the music you guys recommend as I am finding it excellent to listen to. Thanks again! Respectfully, Rick

Respectfully, Rick link Rick, our scene is rich with such fantastic tunes, and I think it's fair to say we're probably all very envious of you for finding such an item. Mind you, if I found such a rare record at a local boot fair or garage sale, and was watching the price rise steadily on ebay I'd be humming the bugger too! Best of luck with the auction, though you won't need it Regards Mace.

I collected records many years ago and was lucky enough to acquire the very first record the Beach Boys ever made. It was the song Surfin' on the X label. When I was in college and in need of money I sold it and I have regreted it ever since. I wonder if I am about to make the same mistake again? My wife thinks I should sell it because it could help offset the cost of my record habit. Now I am not so sure it is the right thing to do. I guess I am sharing this because you can probably relate to this dilema. Also, since I find myself really liking this record can anyone recommend others that I may like? Thanks again, this forum has really been helpful to me. Respectfully, Rick

Thanks again, this forum has really been helpful to me. Respectfully, Rick link Far too many to mention Rick......... Check out this site, it has thousands of tunes on it, though Northern Soul covers many different styles, so some you'll love and others you'll hate. https://www.soulclub.org/ Being as you love Doo Wop I don't suppose you have a spare copy of The Empires 'You're on top girl' knocking about do you??? Worth a try.... As for being unsure about selling it, you could always post it to me for free and if you feel the urge to hear it phone me up and I'll play it down the phone to you.... Everybody on here will tell you not to sell it, unless it's to them for a bargain price, so don't expect any sensible answers on that note!
Iancsloft Posted September 2, 2005 Posted September 2, 2005 I am also quite sure there was another issue on ebay quite recently, anyone confirm? There was also definitely a M- issue copy sold by someone on this form a couple of months back. link ============================================ There was a stock copy in ex cond around 3 years ago on e-bay I lost the bid by $5 it went if i remember for around $1200 I was winning up to the last 6 seconds then a bid came in $5 better than mine it was before I found out about snipping The guy who won it was named Carl from the UK I e-mailed him to see if he wanted to sell it on which he did,nt !!! funny thing is i had never heard of him befoe cant for the life of me remember his surname
Markw Posted September 2, 2005 Posted September 2, 2005 Pete, Can confirm there is an issue/stock of Gene Toones, i had it way back bought for £40.00 from a good friend of mine Mark White around early mid 80's later sold it for £300.00 to Carl Fortnum think he still has it? link What larks Pip!!!! I'd heard that was the one now in Mick Smith's hands? Probably wrong. I had that 45 for £20 off Keb Darge at your Reading Top Rank all dayer Mark - 1982, 83?? At the time, it was the only known issue in the UK. Would have been 1986 when I sold it to you mate.

The picture was certainly of a different looking label than the stock copy. No, the ones I have in mind were definitely issue copies. I do know the difference. It seems relatively common on demo, a bit too common to warrant the price anyway. I used to really like this record but it has been worn out for me over the years. Edited September 2, 2005 by Guest
Dave Abbott Posted September 3, 2005 Posted September 3, 2005 Thanks. I was very lucky and I realize that. I collected records many years ago and was lucky enough to acquire the very first record the Beach Boys ever made. It was the song Surfin' on the X label. link LOL, i was just going to reply to Gasher's previous post "this is the only music we listen to" - with 'apart from the Beach Boys'. My second fav after - N.Soul of course. I was round Nick Brown's last week listening to some tunes and the subject of the BB's came up. He hates them - shame for a guy of such taste (hi, Nick, i will be ringing you next week ;-)) And i think G Toones is rarer than Surfin on 'X' and totally rarer than the release on Candix. Dont regret selling Toones it if its gonna get you the money to buy the stuff you want...but if you like it and others like it then keep buying this stuff mate, you wont regret it and we need some new converts.
Dave Abbott Posted September 3, 2005 Posted September 3, 2005 Come on Christian mate, relatively common to what!! the Mello Souls??! Agree IMO, (the demo) doesnt warrant the current price tag (could say that about a lot of 45s though) but its still quite hard. P.S when's your next 'do'? P.P.S agree too - used to like it and want it - now take or leave it. P.P.S I seem to have agreed with you on all your post. i am off to lay down lol
Chalky Posted September 3, 2005 Posted September 3, 2005 If memory serves me correctly there have been about half a dozen white demos through various sources for sale the last twelve months plus the issues both Christian and myself mentioned. The demo is not what you would call rarest of the rare
Guest Posted September 3, 2005 Posted September 3, 2005 If memory serves me correctly there have been about half a dozen white demos through various sources for sale the last twelve months plus the issues both Christian and myself mentioned. The demo is not what you would call rarest of the rare link Precisely. Obviously not a common record in any format, that's not what I meant, but relatively common in comparison to some other things. There has been more than a few demos for sale in the last year or so. Considering the distributor it is not strange either.
Dave Abbott Posted September 3, 2005 Posted September 3, 2005 Christian and Chalky. True. i was sort of just saying that Christian said its 'relatively' common. When you dont relate what its relative too well... could be any thing. off to lay down again lol
