Y'see, I wasn't around when this post was doing the rounds, so I didn't get the warning.

Just saw 'Here comes the night owl' going cheepo-cheepo, figured it's gotta be worth it.

Just as well the money went to charity. What in the hall is this? It's not remixed, it's got whole new backings pasted on. Northern Soul with computer backings? Who thinks of this stuff?

Oh. Ian Levine and Kev Roberts apparently...

man, except for the dora hall, i don't understand how anyone could call this "not soul". it even looks like a pretty good comp (although probably a bootleg...). i don't understand why someone could start a "worst CD compilations" thread with this CD.

i was recently given a mp3 disc witch contained 70 goldmine cds, 1500 tracks, i saved perhaps 15 tracks and deleted the rest, i`ve never heard such utter shite being passed off as soul in my life,

If you can't find more than 15 decent tracks on the entire Goldmine catalogue you're listening to the wrong sort of music, at least 50% of everything they put out was top notch Northern Soul, saying that not as someone supporting the record label but someone who bought practically all of them when they were released and was rarely disappointed. There are hardly an classic Northern sounds that didn't come out on Goldmine. So you're saying the two Golden Torch and Twisted Wheel compilations contain rubbish? The Blaxckpool Mecca one? The label series United Artists, MGM, Scepter Wand?

Worth the price just for these but I'd have paid the £10 just for the one in bold below

I agree Pete. Like you, I bought the vast majority of the Goldmine series. They were a little variable in terms of sound/recording quality (but at the time these were relatively early days in CD recording) and there was always talk about their legitimacy (recording rights etc).

But they provided a massive amount of quality tracks on what was (at the time) easily transportable music (to the car I mean - not to DJ at soul nights :) ).

The Modern and Millionaires Soul series opened up a whole new (to me) range of modern and crossover tracks that instantly became the basis of my then wants list - Cornell Gunter, Willie Johnson, Cloudburst, Sam Baker, Otis Jackson, Tavasco, Bill Brandon, Dee Edwards, The Pictures, Satin, Bobby Shannon, Jewel, Cecil Lyde, Michael Cloud, CoCo and Ben, Ad Libs, Herby Brown and Richard Caiton.

I could also list an even longer list of 'heavyweight' 60s Northern Tracks.

As you say - listening to the wrong sort of music.

Anyone who REALLY likes Girl Group sounds ought to try and get hold of a series put out by the Belgian label Marginal in the 90's - Girls Girls Girls. There are at least 11 volumes, maybe more, they weren't around for long and to be honest, I never saw another set apart from mine. Material ranges from Northern to pocorn, teenage angst stuff, out and out 60's pop, but all in all a brilliant set and I found some cracking northern things on these and compiled them way before they got any official release (if any did!)

I think i may still have a Marginal catalogue somewhere at home. I Bought a number of these Belgium CD's from Finnbar records in Folkstone. These included two on ones Elgins / Monitors - Velvelettes / Royalettes, some various artist Motown Stuff including an absolute corker Ladies Of Detroit Sound Vol.1. Some of the tracks on their Motown stuff were unissued ones like Reconsider and Crying In The Night. They also had some Cameo Parkway various artist ones which featured many of the tracks later released on the series in England.

The Cleethorpes Story

Sorry but this was such a let down, of all the tunes they could of picked, very poorly picked IMO Think ive only played it once or twice

How can you have a cleethorpes story CD and not have So is the sun on it, A record that they gave away at the 1st Anerversery, and to add insult to injury it appers on a wigan CD

Carnt even remember whats on it , more of a list of what should of been on it

Felt a bit like you at first Miff, but over the last few years has been one of the most played in the car.

I believe Rick Scott put this together and thus reflected the type of stuff he and some of the other DJ's were playing like Norma Jenkins, Today's People, Skull Snaps, The Crow,

Spooky And Sue, Silvetti, East Coast Connection, Boogie Man Orch, Jobell & Orchestra, Bobby Foster and 3rd Time Around to name a few. What was legally available may also played a part in the selection.

There was also a bootleg CD - Talk Of The North going about with World Column. Bobby Hutton, Bits And Pieces, Idle Few, Clyde McPhatter, Sam Moultrie and The Pointer Sisters amongst

the tracks which was perhaps a better representation of all the music played, and also gets played a lot in the car.

Is Finnbar still running? I used to get there catalogues and there used to be some good bargains in it.

Don't know if they are still going, but like you said the catalogues had some good bargins on them.

If my memory of them is right, being small A5 size booklet on coloured paper orange I think?

it was coloured paper, can't remember if the colour kept changing. Very good for rare cd's and hard to find music.

could`nt agree more with you on the monique track, its one of my faves, but i`ve heard it a zillion times, when i buy a cd i`m hoping to hear records that are new to me and give me goosebumps so to speak, a bit like the additions- till the end of time (recent kent release), imo goldmine cds are all filler and no killer, as a friend of mine put it "music for fitting oil cloth to"

Used them quite often in the early 90s - James Cullinan, Folkestone based, if I recall correctly. Would speak to him quite often; seemed to work from home as phone always answered by an elderly (sounding) lady - maybe his mother? He used to be very happy to search out obscure CDs and would always get back, even months later when I'd almost forgotten about the request.

Used to be, as you say, some good bargains, but you had to be quick. Remember spotting Tammi Terrell 'Irresistible' CD at £2.99. He had 2 copies, took both, sold one on for a fiver. Never seen it on CD before or since (not that I've spent any time searching it out). Anyone any idea on whether it was a widely distributed CD?

Seems just like yesterday when I was dealing with them - but jeez it's 20 years ago

I think George that you're assessing the CDs with the benefit of hindsight. These CDs were published around 15 - 20 years ago so many of the tracks you've heard a 'zillion' times would, most probably, not have been the case when the Cds were first published. You've had up to 20 years since to get to the 'zillion' mark.

And these were being published at a time when huge numbers were getting back into NS after, like many, breaking off from the scene for marriage, mortgages and kids. I think that the Goldmine series had a marked influence in (re) introducing many to things that they'd either forgotten or missed out on, yet with a decent amount of recognisable tracks they'd not heard for years.

I think in the history book of the scene, Goldmine will have some standing, perhaps not at the same level as Grapevine, but possibly somewhere in the same chapter.

Surely the worst CD ever would be something like Mud and other shite from the 70s.

The best ones are on Goldmine, Kent, Sequial, Westside,Expansion, Marginal, Outta Sight, etc, etc.

Sorry for the labels I missed off, but it was off top of my head without going to check.

Anything by Levine us usually pretty terrible and I have to agree that '... Night Owl' CD is total garbage.

Taking into account all the CDs and DVDs, that man has ruined more Northern tracks than I've had hot dinners.

He seems obsessed with adding in sampled Motown drum licks too for some weird reason. For me, one of the things I like about Northern is that it does NOT sound like Motown.

Cheers

At least even the shirtiest 70s albums were played by real human beings, and Mud wrote and recorded 'Mr. Bagatelle' so they can't be all bad...

I'd say the crappiest CD of all time is almost certainly a nineties or noughties affair.

...As 'Here comes the night owl' was, come to think of it...

Sorry Mr Roberts but one of the first compilation cd's I bought was the 'North of Watford' one you did and I thought it was awful.

I don't know if anyone else has mentioned it, but I ended up getting a Best of Marv Johnson CD long before the Ace Records release came out. I popped it in the car and heard re-recorded versions with drum machines -- ugh!

Yeah, there is some bad stuff from the 00s, but there is quite alot of good stuff as well.
