Guest Chris64 Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Hello, I'm new here, London-based - just been getting into this fabulous music over the past couple of years and enjoying visits to the 100 Club, Va Va Voom etc... Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere on the forum ( had a quick look but couldn't find anything), but... Can anyone recommend a book that would cover stories about some of the old singers and groups? ...I've got a few books about soul DJs, clubs and the 'scene' in general here in the U.K. but what I'm now after is something that will tell a few stories about the people that recorded these wonderful tunes in the 60s...I listen to some of them and wonder - what happened to them? In some cases like The People's Choice and the Parliaments going on to greater fame and success in the 1970s...in other cases seemingly disappearing....for example, what, if anything, is known about Charles Lamont and the Extremes? Who were they and what else did they record? Thanks if anyone can help! PS Didn't know whether I should put this in the 'introductions' part of the foru or here, find I can't cut and paste, aaargh, it so here it stays
Stuart Russell Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 The All Music Guide To Soul (ISBN 0879307447) is a good reference book that covers pretty much everything in some detail. Not perfect, but quite comprehensive. Robert Prouter's Chicago Soul covers the Windy City thoroughly and if you want to know about Detroit soul and R&B then Keith Rylatt's Groovesville USA is excellent. I should know as I published it! Cheers Stuart
Guest Chris64 Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 (edited) Thanks Stuart, the first one you mention looks like it would be a good starter for me. Will keep an eye out for the others. Edited January 6, 2011 by Chris64
