Yes, i was the uk Wally breaker. (over 2 years ago). I heard it off Callum in OZ< and they came from Mr P in Carolinas. Great ghetto funk tune. It has already done 5 years or more on the funk scene and is smashing the northern scene.

Joan loves it, i played it round her house and her and T were stomping til dawn. (on the disc.ha!)

Sold mine before it gets played to death and killed.

When i was looking for it 4 years back, it was impossible to find. Then i eventually got one and played it in uk and people still couldn't find it. When i heard that quite a few had turned up, in uk last year i got suspicious and sold mine (just paranoia  ). Its strange how so many materialised and i know they didnt come from Jason.

It was a £1000 tune before the 'lucky' uk batch find...

I guess ultimately there is levels within levels. Glen Miller to me is never a reggae record?! Does it make it reggae just because its from Jamaica?

I'm aware you can take anything too far but the day we start treating 45s like Glen Miller or Richard Marks as second rate is the day we should go and do something else with our time....

Room for it all if its good, as previously said?

Who's ever said Glen Miller is a reggae record? It's a Jamaican soul record, there's thousands of them. And of course it came out 2 years before the term reggae had even been coined.

There are loads of these funky reggae soul records Jackie Edwards-I Must Go Back is one of them.......who originally played Wally Coco on the funk scene and when?.It sounds like one of the records Trouble/Wrighty/Keb/Snowboy would have played for a brief period.

i did play it briefly when i first got it about 5 years ago, wasnt a 'must play' 45 for me tho, more just a nice new tune to try out at the time...dont think the other three guys you mentioned ever had it tho

Chalky when Andy comes down to Groovesville he'll find that a lot of people know it / dance to it, Why? because it's been played for a long while down here. Didn't he do 3 on Tuska? I'll have to check. Agree the Shout one is excellent as well. "Complete Opposites" "Innocent bystander" old Yarmouth spin, great and much better than Chuck Corby. The Note one is rare but not worth the price that guy wanted.....right I'll go back to sleep now.....oh except to say Wally Coco great on the dancefloor, poor on the headphones. STeve

*****Post corrected.......now that brain cells functioning properly again*****

I know it's been played here and there, also heard Ged Parker play it when not many really knew the record apart form collectors.

Ged played it at Soul or Nothing when it was at Lloyd Street. That was the first time I heard it.

Sounds like the place, Andy had to go and look who was playing it cause I for one had only ever heard Andy play it prior to then.

Andy played it last night, sounded fantastic

I got the impression some of us were simply calling jamaican soul 'reggae' in a derogatory fashion. Which would be a shame if we were.

I don't know really - but I do know that the example that I quoted, Del Davis, is a reggae record and not a soul record by a reggae artist.

Pete - just listened to the Del davis thing...as you say it is actually rocksteady/reggae. Wheres this being played out of interest??

'black is black, i want my baby back...'

It's not bad, but it's not as good as most of the cheap funky and gospel sounds around at the moment. The only thing it has over them is rarity, it makes me wonder if that's the only reason it's being given plays in main rooms at nighters and not the £10 stuff. Ann Sexton - It's All Over But the Shouting pisses all over Wally Coco, but you won't hear that played out at a big nighter I bet.

I quite like it but wouldn't spend the prices mentioned on here for it no.gif. Mainly as there are better records to spend the money on IMO and you're right about the rarity factor though I do think that there are more quality £10ers getting some spins at the nighters than there have been over the last couple of years, which is great as surely the only real way to judge a record is on quality not price/rarity?

Ann Sexton's 'It's All Over But The Shouting' is a really good record but as I keep telling you Matt, the Gladys Knight version kicks the cr*p out of it :hatsoff2:

A Carl and Maria Willingham spin...........come on we need to embrace pop reggae on the northern scene. There was another £10 pink Island spin as well that suddenly shot up to £150 and i have heard of a few Joyce Bond tracks being spun. Why doesn't someone book Wrighty for these deep funk northern gigs.........he's been collecting and deejaying this stuff for years as was Trouble and Jap Jimmy.

not with in the skinhead/reggae scene where this 45 actually had no credibiltiy as it was too "poppy" or simply too much a soul record. It used to sell for a fiver until not too long ago...Actually it was first released on Trojan Records subsidiary Bread Records strangely enough with a flipside sung in German ohmy.gif maybe that is the reason ..and here we answer your question where this record gets played out...why it is played on the German Soul scene..THE JAN from Hamburg featuring this tune in particular.

Marc, which Del Davis record are you talking about? Sure not "Baby don't wake me"? That one goes for silly money for quite some time now and the flipside "wishing and hoping" sure doesn't look like it's sung in german...

Only had the Bread version myself ,and to be honest never played it cos i sold it as soon as i got it !

But it did come out first on TROJAN

Think Marc is saying that one of em has a German flip ??

First time i heard it ,it was being covered up on a radio spot as ......................ROBERT TANNER

That has to go down as the most unlikely cover up artist i've ever heard yes.gif

Funny thing was .......i used that phone search thing SHAZAM, and it told me withing 30 seconds who it actually was :D

But again ,like the Wally Coco ...it might not sound great to a person who wants to hear pure soul that's dripping with emotion, but at a venue full of people who are up for a night of dancing, in a room with a great atmosphere, then this does the business

Going off on a tangent again....this is the biggest problem on the scene today......the constant critisism of a soul record from the point of view of a collector opposed to a dj??

If you want to sit at home with the head phones on,close your eyes and just take in all the heartache and emotion of the song ,and be blown away by a breathtaking vocal ,then a lot of stuff that the "northern soul " scene represents will not have the desired effect.

However from the point of view of a dj who wants to play a set to a room full of people ,who've payed to have a night up dancing and getting a buzz ,not to be confused with hairs on the back of the neck tingling, then tunes like Wally Coco and Dell Davis fit the bill perfectly.

That's not to say soul nights only play up-tempo catchy tunes ,but my theory is that's how these records are best judged .

That said ,there's nobody more up for a good dance than Joan ,and she definitely knows her soul ,so if she says it's pants then im inclined to agree with her ,from the point of view ,it's not a soulful record .

My belief is ,we are now seeing a slight change on the more "progressive " scene ,with a leaning to more uptempo funky edged sounds .

Let's be honest the mid-tempo /cross-over sound struggles in the big room and is almost a no no at allnighters ,has taken some stick from a lot of traditional "northern soul " fans ,but all the same , i would hate to see it disappear .

Theirs room in my heart for all styles /genre's ,it's all about getting the balance right....a good mixture over the night , the right records at the right time of night ,from dj's who know their trade , can put a set together to appease the crowd and make the promotors job easy!

P.s

Sorry to twitter on but i've waited 6 weeks to get back to work after the bad weather and the xmas shut down ,only to be sent home cos it's p**sing down

Hardly all over the place is it  Andy been playing if for a few years now but it hasn't really took off the way Wally Coco has, anywhere  Even though it is a far superior record!!

hi Benji, before the demand from the Soul scene grew it was sold for next to nth. The flipside of the first release is sung in German. Even the title is German "wundersch¶n" it is called or sth like that... this, the first release, was released on Trojan subsidary Bread Records.

Marc, flipside of the Bread release is wishing and hoping as I said in my previous post. Anyway, no need to argue about that. Did you know that Del Davis lives in Augsburg now and even wrote a song for FC Augsburg?

Just checked em both on popsike and yes ...Marc has been on the sauce :rolleyes:beer.gif:D

unless of course it's mis-labelled

Agree it's not as instant as Wally Coco, but it's been played enough down here that I am sure Andy will get requests for it.

Trouble, Keb and Snowboy didnt. Most dealers in uk hadn't even heard of it 4 or so years ago. Or were keeping quiet when i asked. Jason was the man in the know.
