For my sins one area of soul collecting I have over looked is the 70's philly sound, including the obvious one's.

Really into the O'jays "USE TO BE MY GIRL" and Harold Melvin "THE LOVE I LOST" at the moment, can people rep me similar.

Thanks in advance

Geoff

Very timely as 2011 is the 40th anniversary of Philly International Records. One of the most successful Black music labels of all time and still independently owned by it's original founders, Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff - one of the greatest song-writing teams of all time and right up there with Holland-Dozier-Holland and Smokey Robinson in my view.

So here's a couple of starters which will set you back less than a fiver each (including postage):-

Philly Disco 70's Dance Floor Anthems From The City Of Brotherly Love Backbeats BACKB003

You're in for a major treat. The Philly Stuff comes from a great heritage and does major justice to the 70's. Can't go wrong with it to be honest.

Happy New Year Geoff! In fact I'll send you some goodies!

Thanks for those two recommendations Ian, just ordered em from Amazon

Best thing about the Philly stuff (singles) is most of it's readily available and inexpensive!

Was the Teddy P "You Can't Hide From Yourself" released as a single in the US, or LP track only?

Another cheapie from teddy p , Bad Luck , only you is a belter. Sandra Richardson " Stay with me " on intersoul is an underplayed gem.Anne sexton" I still love you

" on seventy seven another favourite

Softouch after you give your all on prodigal is a bit pricier but worth every penny you pay.

Yes it is.

Infact the whole EPP album is just about my all time favourite Philly LP. A splended mix of soulful ballads and uptempo songs.

The cd is available from Amazon.

Also well worth checking out is "The whispers janus recordings" which includes the groups classic philladelphia LP that the group cut in 1974.

As you've gathered I'm quite a philly fan and I would say that my all time favourite is The Trammps "Where Do We Go From Here" the original mix has the spoken bit at the beginning

Great list Hunnymon and well done with the technology!

But you might need to bounce out "Together We Can Make Such Sweet Music" - Detroit Spinners 'cos that was a Detroit recording when they were still on Motown. In fact, Motown reissued it off the back of their early Philly successes. :D

Ian D

I'm sure it will come as no surprise Ian when I tell you that that I've also got a motown section on me ipod !

However, in the philly section it stays!

It is the motown 1973 re-issue version that's on me ipod which motown had tampered with in order to make it sound more like a philly record they dubbed over a Thom Bell 1973 style drum beat onto the record and they also totally removed the vocals to an whole verse in order to give the song a 1973 philly style instrumental break.

I feel that this is enough for it to qualify it as an honorary philly record

I seem th recall that it was issued by motown the very same week that atlantic put out "One Of A Kind" in order to compete with it.

If it was the original version, it would be in the motown section.

I'm sure you knew this already Ian, and you were just testing me :D
