A while back I was trying to get some information on a 45 by Grady Price and someone posted that it was another Burnley record. Could someone please tell me what that means?

I will no doubt get my neck broke for saying this but I don't consider there to be any such thing as a 'Burnley' record.

Maybe a record that was played at Burnley but as far as I can see the place broke no new records. Not to these ears anyway.

It was probably played there that's all. But it will have been played elsewhere too.

Right, where's that neck brace

Get ya self along there in January & find out mate.

Joan - Cliff & Karl both played records out at Burnley which hadnt had previous plays, not saying they were exclusive to Burnley has Karl particularly plays out every where regularly, I know what you mean though, maybe it was the underplayed then ?..............also Burnley was more about a 'sound' I think, which was usually a gritty, hard edged dancer........just my opinion  .

I am not going to get into an argument about this as I enjoyed Burnley. But I never noticed a 'sound'.

As for your comment about January? Far be it from me to speak for them but I am sure Karl and Sean want to start with a clean slate and build their own 'niter identity' and not hark back to what went before.

Wouldnt want to have an argument Joan, just an opinion as you have. And I think you are probably right about January's event, although comparisons will be drawn because of the DJ's, but point taken, clean sheet...........

Merry Xmas misery

But for me Burnley did have it's own soundyes.gif, but I wasn't on this 'scene' til 2001 so lots of stuff I didn't know til I went to Burnley...

So to answer the question 'what is a Burnley record?'..............one that blows your f**king head off and makes you want to dance in a bubblelaugh.gif

But surely that happens everywhere those records are played? Burnley is just a room. It is the record that does the business.

I am off this thread now. I will leave you all to it

Burnley seemed to have a sound of its own.Keeping it uptempo and gritty was the format generally.

Can't see too much altering with the new Burnley.

Rudy Love - "Suffering wrath",springs to mind as a recent example.

Come back Joansmile.gif

But an intimate roomyes.gif..... not a vast venue where you can get lost...... I agree it's the record that does the businessyes.gif but also the venue and the people are contributing to 'that Burnley sound'..... a sense of belonging which I had never experienced before until i went to Burnley.... perhaps I'm looking at this with rose tinted glasses and my sad memoriessad.gif

right I'm out of here nowlaugh.gif

Rudy Love been around long time Kev.

I'm with Joan, To be considered a sound of anywhere it has to be "broken" there and gone on to bigger things, that includes the venue. Plenty of venues play records that make you want to dance.

i have to agree with you there kev, burnley did have its own sound. even if a lot of the sounds were known to some there were still a lot of people who hadn't heard them before.i think it wasn't just one thing that made burnley so special it was a combination of the dj's and the regulars all wanting to same thing, underplayed uptempo 6ts northern ,r'b & funky northern all night long, which dosen't suit everybody i know, but those it did loved it.

two records that spring to mind for me that were first broke at burnley are dewey black {first played by pottsy, then made big by cliff camfield} and strange i&tt

always say you can tell a event has made its mark when its got enough going for it for people to say thats a "so and so" play or sound

anyone can play ought, its when people remember and associate them to a certain venue that is above the mark

any promoters, djs or crowd who have achieved that deserve some hats off credit imo

Maybe we should be talking about records that you personally associate with Burnley.Which gave it that Batcave sound. Some tunes just seem to fit a venue, even though you know they've been played elsewhere.

Chalky - yes i know about Rudy Love, was trying to give an example of a tune that will be familiar to SS posters.:sweatingbullets:

Familiar in what way? It isn't a Burnley Record as the title is suggesting. It was played at other venues before Burnley.

seems only polite to put my 50ks worth in. whats a burnley record?.......there are plenty played there that someone knows somewhere or richard serling played on the 3rd may 1974 ect ect.,but it,s funny that time and time again when a tunes bin played somewhere someone turns around and says "thats a burnley tune" and ya just know it,s the case. I think of it more of a vibe....before finding this place our lot were heartily sick of same ole same ole venues......first time at burnley blew me away and it has done ever since. C liff Camfield has played loads of unknown/coverups that were great, great dance tunes and i,m sure he will again also karl heard has played coverups a plenty gene redding and rudy mokkerby to name two......sure they were known, but he had the cahoonas to recognise their worth and he hit the decks with em because they were good NOT JUST RARE. (we now hear these two being played by other dj,s). As far as dewy black goes......it was only the legend who instantly locked onto this mighty r&b stormer.......mick smith played it 15 years ago woopy do what does that mean?. It,s not about when a record was first played (thats bollox) some tunes are not always played at THEIR right time. Burnley does have a sound of it,s own for sure, thing is if you don,t like that sound you will not get it or in some cases not want to get it.....thats fine. Those that get it doo and love it and there really ain,t nowhere to touch it for some. Now l will get hung for this, but here goes a few big named dj,s failed to impress at this venue Kenny Burrell,John Parker and also ted because they made the mistake of thinking that big ticket rarities only would be good enough......(where were the little ticket gems ) and so imo and quite a few others...they bombed. However lots of fellas who are not dj,s as a rule played there and went down a f**king storm,l remember one such night when a fella said to me "whos the dj" "never seen him before, but he,s f**king brilliant". There are some great nighters out there which we all have a ball at and long may it continue, but if it,s about nighter music ALL NIGHT LONG then phil,s burnley was my nervana. we happily drove 3 hours to get there cos it was that good.

Joan is right though that was then and i,m sure sean and karl have their own ideas for their style burnley and if you don,t like what they do....it won,t be for the lack of them trying atb tezza

What is a Burnley record?

A record that is synonomous with the Burnley Allnighter sound.

The Burnley Allnighter was (is) an event in the north of England, that plays upfront Northern Soul. Upfront meaning undiscovered / underplayed / lesser known sounds. Whilst there are a number of great fresh events (Lifeline and Bidds for example) playing what could be regarded as a definite Upfront music policy as opposed to the more nostalgic (known oldie) sounds. Burnley stands out, as it does / did have a distinctive sound, being uptempo, gritty and often earthy music.

It was the same as Stafford in a way in that Stafford had a fresh inventory of new/underplayed records (many of which had been aired at Wigan, Clifton Hall, Bedford etc) but then went onto embrace many beat ballad records, which then became synonomous with the 'Stafford Sound'. Other iconic venues that had a certain distinctive sound were Twisted Wheel, Mecca, Wigan and even the Dome in London.

Now all that said, not everything at Burnley fell into this uptempo / down and dirty category, there was a mixture of mid-tempo and funky orientated stuff played, as well as known established rarities.

I think Mike, framed the 'sound' phenomena nicely in his post above, in that there is a sound that is synonomous and resonates with the Burnley 'feel', regardless of whether the records had been originally played elsewhere before.

Burnley most definately was a place where many 'newie' records were also played, in addition to underplayed or known things then taken to new heights of exposure and popularity on the wider rare soul scene.

The problem with most of the newies, was that the were and still are covered-up. Whilst I had many cover-up plays, Cliff Camfield was notorious for covering up things, over half of his sets were cover-up records.

Other Burnley DJs could give you their plays, but a few records that were popular there for me were...

Royal Cinders - You Sure is Funky - HipTime

Soul Dynamics - Heart Full of Soul - D&W

Foreign Blue Renaissance - Finding You - Kohoutech

The Devils - Love & Understanding - Cuca (JJ Watson - Sweet Love Cover-up)

The Chanters - What Are You Doin - SSP (The Primers - Sometimes I Wonder Cover-up)

Royal Imperials - This Heart of Mine - Mellow Town

Soul Sounds Unlimited - Word of Love - June

Extremes - I Need Your Love - 4J

Sugar Boy - Freeman - Shades

Cliffhangers - Since You've Gone Away - KCea

Conner Cagle - Let Your Good Side Show - Sunshine

I could go on and on, but all of these were most definitely either first played or at least elevated at Burnley, there were many many more.

I hope this helps rather than confuse.

I have to be honest and say I was always a little underwhelmed by this "buzz" around Burnley, however I suspect you get in one Russ, and it was the whole experience rather than just the music, all the best times on the Northern scene for me have involved this, the right journey, the right people, the right vibe, and it becomes your club, your special place, lets face it some of the places we have had the best times over the years were the least likely but every morning after felt like you had been through some spiritual experience.

I suspect for most, although obviously not yerself Russ, Burnley has been elevated beyoynd its worth because most attendees were on their 20 year break during the 80's when this was a weekly experience, as to be honest the few playlists featured on here and my conversations with some people who went have suggested that many of the people dju'ing have played very average collectors sets or just fuck off big rare things that have been hammered since 1979, and people just don't seem to get that is as bad as the overplayed oldies. Obviously Karl H and Cliff C didn't publish playlists and I know enough of these guys to say that both would have been worth travelling for, but to be honest not much else did, and I was travellling a fair bit last year.

I do suspect it was a mix of people making up for their lost time, topped up by people like Russ and Joan whose enthusiasm is legendary, and brings nights up, but in all honesty comparing it to Stafford and its like, is plainly laughable, and says much more about who does get it and who doesn't,,,,,,

Off for my morning Gin, I feel better today so might have a little tonic with it.......

Christ Chalky, familiar in the way of an example of a Burnley tune.Played at Burnley, associated with venue.Nothing more or less.

Not claiming anything for Burnley.

Where else was it played and known, as much as it is now.?.Back in the 80's?

Last word on this.It never stopped Wigan or Stafford having a "sound" of its own, even though both "borrowed" earlier venues playlists  .

not sure if you went to burnley or not,but you have missed the point that so many miss......first I ain,t ever been on a twenty year break from the scene and to supose that most folk have is nuts. To compare it to stafford (which l went to aplenty) is nuts as it was generally a more mid tempo kinda place......for me burnley is better it,s saying you're not dead yet get off ya arses and lets get back to what a nighter should be about. As for talking to others about a venue it depends on what angle that person wants to put. As far as l can remember there have only been two playlists published on this site one of which was CHORLEYBLOKE from oz,didn,t stop people who loved to hate on this venue constantly enquireing (what they playing at burnley). A thought on the music policy that most seem to miss YES they did play rare big oldies, YES they did play all those little underplayed oldies,YES they did play coverups and YES they did play lottsa new and funky stuff, but yet again they mixed em up didn,t hammer things HOW THE MUSIC SHOULD BE PLAYED are we to say for instance temptation walk is shit because it was played many years ago,do we not still like it as long as it,s not hammered mixed in with everything else it,s great to hear. Nobody slags butch off because he reactivates the stratoliners, johnny howard (joans fav tune ) lee fields ect ect we all say yeh why not top tunes as long as they're not hammered. Burnley was first to play ALL the stuff in one seamless night you never knew who the dj was because it flowed.........a lot of places nowadays are up and down lst dj big oldies set,2nd dj all unknown, 3rd dj upfront biggies,4th dj mid tempo magic and so on.

As for a clubs worth...........well for one lttle one room paradise in a tiny mill town in the north west to generate such passion in folk...me and many others...........THERE HAD TO OF BEEN SOMETHING

As i,ve said before if you got it great if you didn,t or just didn,t want to..........the club has no worth my guess is some just didn,t wanna full stop atb tezza

Plenty folk with a great great passion for this little old niter, a passion they aint ever got anyplace else..

Job done from the Burnley team. they have forged their own piece of soul history for this..

Only went once and can't really give my own take on the place apart from every tune was a train from hell, coming down the mountain and loaded with tnt

Uptempo ghetto soul with a funk/gospel/ RnB side salad thats been spit roasted in hell....

Knowing Karl as i do, i would have a good idea of whats a Burnley tune... As would many others...

Pat could not put all that on the sleeve and just said " a Burnley sound "

Was that another 50ks worthlaugh.gifthumbsup.gif

Christ Chalky, familiar in the way of an example of a Burnley tune.Played at Burnley, associated with venue.Nothing more or less.

Not claiming anything for Burnley.

Where else was it played and known, as much as it is now.?.Back in the 80's?

Last word on this.It never stopped Wigan or Stafford having a "sound" of its own, even though both "borrowed" earlier venues playlists  .

I don't deny Burnley had it's own style. it did (good on it too, I only wish more venues did the same instead of following the flock), but most of the records featured at Burnley were played already on the scene, many of them oldies, it had very few records you could say were exclusive to Burnley or "broken" at the venue, I could got through Andy K's list and say half of them were played by such and such first but what's the point. Burnley is popular amongst a a small minority of folk who like Jock said maybe missed out on a lot of what was played first time round. You would think reading the topics on here it was packed to the rafters every time but far from it. The last two have had a total of about 80 people through the doors, just over 20 at the last one so I hear, and Phil struggled a lot with numbers.

Wigan and Stafford had their own sound and their own records but like Jock said to even begin to compare Burnley to places like Stafford is laughable. It is a pointless argument, Wigan and Stafford might have borrowed sounds from other venues but they did "break" 100's of new discoveries as well.

As for Rudy Love it was played anywhere Cliff Steele played for one, Lifeline and other venues, long before Burnley, it was through Cliff that others picked up on the record. If you wanna claim a record for anywhere at least get the facts right.

Off for a pint.....

Never compared Stafford to Burnley, only the fact that if one was entitled to have a "sound",so is another.Nowhere was the point being made of Burnley breaking new discoveries. The question was "What is a Burnley Record".An example of a record played at Burnley.

Many years ago a good friend of mine,Tats, played me Jock Mitchell,Duke Browner and Otis Smith.I was still at school at the time, but whenever i hear those tunes i'm reminded not of the Torch or Wigan etc,,but of Tats.....Association.

Lastly i know Rudy Love is a Cliff record......and like i said,i'm not claiming anything so there's no facts to get right.

Off for two pints...

I didn't say you had compared Burnley to Stafford, that was someone else earlier in the topic. Think the term "sound" and "tune/record" getting mixed up. I've already said Burnley had a sound of it's own so will leave at that.

Off for another :D:lol: Gonna have to restock soon
