I've been thinking about this too Ezzie. - Mainly because I'm getting really fed up to the back teeth of seeing "Jukebox 45" reissues of records I own. Off the top of my head: Ann Cole - Each Day, Imperialites - Have Love Will Travel, Nappy Brown - Coal Miner.

My guess was that as they are over 50 years old they're out of copyright and therefore up for grabs?

Blatant bootlegs done by a semi-famous actor....

I'm very shocked, I always thought Reg Hollis was a man of integrity !

I wonder if chief inspector Derek Conway knows anything about this ???

Trouble is, without having the originals in your hand many of these are good enough to fool a lot of collectors - stick one up for sale on ebay with a half decent photo and you could really lift someones leg.

Yes, I saw some and the labels were exact copies of the originals.

If it's who I think it is, he used the same label printers in Essex that I used from the late '80s until a few years ago. I saw new DeLuxe and King labels and, interestingly, at the same time I also saw labels for the Mark Lloyd bootleg on Parlophone.

Can I assume they were bootlegged by the same man?

The Problem With All This Bootlegging Is That The Rare Record Is Suddenly An Overplayed Oldie And Then Worth Jack Sh*t Wherever You Go Someone Is Playing Their Boot And People Get Fed Up Hearing It Which Then Means The Original Is Not As Sought After Thus Bringing The Value Down, And The Poor Sods That Spend A Lot Of Time And Money Sourcing The Big/Rare Tunes End Up Owning A £1500 Record Now Worth £300 And The Guys That Bought The Boot Don't Give A Flying F*ck. Rant Over laugh.gif

Imperialites is not OOC, Godz. He's (allegedly) done several others that are not OOC, too.

Ironically this may prove to be his undoing as one company that I'm aware of, whose non-OOC 45 he's (allegedly) counterfeited, has found out via their own methods of detection who's (allegedly) responsible and is planning on making an issue out of it.

It's not Ace/Kent, before anyone asks....

Yup. I just bought the tunes I mentioned - and others that have also been booted - because I liked them and I'm record collector. Not because they are affiliated to any particular scene. Yet it seems to be the R&B scene that's being aggressively targeted these days.

Maybe I should get into 'Boogie'. God forbid!

and if you check his completed listings plenty selling for £4.99 , £5,99 when originals on some titles are also readily around. He does state repress on Rose Batiste and a few more.

Noticed he is not registered as a business seller either ....yet selling plenty of records .....

Not defending this guy, have no idea who he is, but if my Mother wanted to sell off her rock & roll collection that she bought in the late 50's, should she have to register as a business?

I think possibly the only way of stopping the flood of bootlegs onto ebay is for someone (with deep pockets) who owns the rights to a label/tune/artist/whatever to try and take eBay to court over it. Or possibly use trading standards (who are generally a joke) to do the job for them.

eBay are clearly turning a blind eye to people churning out bootlegs and selling them via eBay, surely at some point this becomes consensual?

At the end of the day, it is people buying them that ensures the practice continues, if there was no demand nobody would produce them.

367 completed listings this month many of similar titles so this not really his collection selling off , but I take your point made re hobby selling off collections and agree ..though don' t think this applies in this instance...

No you're absolutely right, he's just selling bootlegs, but where do they draw the line with someone selling their own collection? I obviously buy and sell Northern Soul 45's for a living so am registered as a business, but when I get really short of cash, I dig into my own reggae collection and let a few items go - that's not business selling surely?

my strategy is to buy only records that have not or i think may not be booted,or indeed reissued , this means i dont ever own a lot of stuff i like, but i find it more enjoyable to have a continueingly changing collection of " unknown to most" , or oddball records anyway ...........i have sold unknowingly or unwisely bought boots, but always state the provanence,................. the other side of the coin is a few dealers have bought originals off me when i returned to the scene telling me" thier boots mate " and made tidy profits from it..........ezzie

That Saves Me A Question I Was Wondering If You Would Have To Register As A Business To Sell A Collection ! !

Don't know if that helps as it's only valid to german Ebay accounts, but if you exceed a certain number of sold items over a certain period of time, Ebay Germany considers you to be a business seller even if you're registered as a private seller. is there anything similar with Ebay UK?

Yes Benji they are starting to clamp down - you always see a rush of items for sale on free listing day 's for private sellers. However, they now have a limit on 99p auctions private sellers can list....

Still there is probably 100' s of dealers on Ebay full time not registered ... I can think of one that sells over 100 items daily , has a feedback in excess of 12000 and is not registered, but hey good luck to them if that s how they get round it.........

It's not that once you've exceeded the threshold Ebay is going to change your account from private to business seller.

But there are different terms for private and business seller. E.g. you can be liable for an item lost in the post as a private seller, even if that term only applies to business sellers.

We all should, he is basically 'stealing' and no royalties will go back to the artists or any other interested parties. He doesn't own any of the copyrights to these tracks, and is blatently making money off other peoples property. Some of the stuff he's making are major labels, Chess etc and these companies should really be clamping down on any of this sort of activity. It's the BPI who really need to get involved, but its probably too low level for them. Although I'm sure if any of the major record companies saw this stuff on ebay and the numbers involved they would act. Trouble is these days the likes of EMI, Universal, WB's and Sony own so many copyrights would be able to spot some of the non-major labels these boots are on.

But surely bootlegging/reissues have been happening on the Northern Scene since it began, and every decade since?

I don't agree with it, but it's always happened and always will, for as long as there is money to be made!
