Guest Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 Thinking-caps on : which NS related tunes have unexpectedly turned up in a film ? (that has no connection to NS) and while on Nsoul in film, have any NS artists been spotted unexpectedly ? (in film) Rob.
Guest Paul Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 (edited) Clubbed (2009) featured some great soul tracks, one of which was 'northern'. The film closed with 'Blowing My Mind To Pieces' by Bob Relf who died just before the film was released. Crying With Laughter (2010) featured 'A Day In Sausalito' by The Checkerboard Squares, played in full at the end of the film. The DVD will be released in January 2011. There's a brit gangster movie from 3 or 4 years ago staring Danny Dyer' I can't remember the title, but nearly all the film there are N.S. songs playing in the backround. I am sure someone on here knows what it is? Edited December 12, 2010 by davetay

Guest Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 Hi and thanks everyone for the tips My jaw-dropper is ....... Walter Jackson "its an uphill climb to the bottom".........from the 1985 film starring William Peterson........"To live and die in L.A." This was a police type thriller, errrr, if my memory serves me well - and IAUCTTB had absolutely no connotation whatever to the film As I said,........unexpected Rob.

Godzilla Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 California Montage by Young Holt unlimited was the theme tune to the 1969 film "winning" which starred Paul Newman as an indy racing car driver I'd noticed that on my copy. And the fact the it was written by Dave Gruisin - which inspired me to do a search. Turns out that he also recorded a version of it himself. Came out on album and on a Decca 45. Not a patch on Young Holt unlimited, more of an easy listening version in fact. Still interesting to those of who like to hear original / different cuts I think:
Simsy Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 Well I clicked this link and it inadvertently took me through to a softcore porn vid as I was frantically trying to navigate away from this depraved filth, I couldn't help noticing that besides the tart playing with her jubblies, was a crackin' Lou Rawls number playing in the background ... I can't remember the title ..'Front Room Fantasies' or maybe 'Misadventures at Megaboob Manor' .. Something like that ..

(that has no connection to NS) and while on Nsoul in film, have any NS artists been spotted unexpectedly ? (in film) Rob. I remember seeing in the credits of the "National Lampoons Animal House" a bloke called Melvin Britt. A load of us went to see the film when it was released in 1978. He also did some of the backing vocals. I was never sure if it was THE Mel Britt. Anybody know for if it was?
Guest ritchie Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 Could well have been..wasn't paying that much attention till I heard it. Thanks for the link but it's not available anymore so I guess I'll never know. Till they repeat them all next week. Might have been related to this mate
Guest ritchie Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 Got a Bona fide Kill Bill 1# Human Beinz -Nobody But Me. Played when Uma is kicking the granny out of the Crazy 88. Saw a documentary on Tarrantino a while back where he was going through his record box, he said it was one of his favorite tunes.

Found out name of film it is called "The All Together" Songs include "Gonna Be A Big Thing" "Breakaway" "Open The Door To Your Heart" "Going To A Happening" plus loads more.
Citizen P Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 Quite often seen the name -MORRIS CHESTNUT-turn up on the end credits, Don't know if it's the same one but. Also there's Rat Race, from the Tony Curtis film of the same name- (either the Elmer Bernstein or Richard Maltby version though) Tony
purist Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 Cant remember the film now, so I'm hoping someone else will. There's 3 old black guys sitting outside a store and every time the store comes into view the old guys are back there again, commenting on life. As I remember 2 of the 3 were old northern artists (the other being some old comedian possibly?) and it got talked about quite a lot on the scene at the time the film appeared. Could it be " a Spike Lee Joint " or similar? most likely a 90's film? help !
Shinehead Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 The Three Degrees were in The French Connection . Don,t know about Mel Britt in National Lampoon but the great soul/blues artist Robert Cray was in it.

Never seen a fil with him, I've always seen his name in crappy action stuff. In the Boat That Rocked there might be a couple. Off the top of my head This Old Heart Of Mine by The Isley Brothers...

Saw a documentary on Tarrantino a while back where he was going through his record box, he said it was one of his favorite tunes. That used to be on a Mastercard ad in the states too. When watching the NFL games occasionally we'd get an American ad before the producer probably watching Countryfile, spotted that he needed to switch the feed.

A member of the cast is Jo Hartley who is also in SoulBoy and was in a short 2004 film called Northern Soul (Shane Meadows). I wonder if she really does like Northern?

Greety Posted December 17, 2010 Posted December 17, 2010 My mate Budgie told me of a porno film where some bird is in the back of a taxi driving through London's Hyde Park. Playing in the background was Third Time Arounds' "Everythings Gonna be Allright".
