Pete S Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 will this lot be getting there collars felt at last,??? :D https://www.vinylcarvers.com/homepage.html Why should they, they know absolutely nothing about the music that they get sent as mp3's to make into vinyl records, if you tell them that the recording is by you or that you own the copyright, what are they meant to do, spend a month trying to track down the information?

Guest eddiep Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 will this lot be getting there collars felt at last,??? https://www.vinylcarv...m/homepage.html Please bear in mind guys that these people also provide a service to many young musician's and band's to produce a work of their own into vinyl. As a young aspiring guitarist many many years ago...it was exciting to see the bands music that I was in, that was wrote, practised and performed over many hours, weeks and months be recorded and turned into something you could physically hold and play. A huge amount of satisfaction came from that. If home recording was as easy to do 20 odd years ago as it is today (e.g. digital recording) then someone like 'vinylcarvers' would of been a dream come true! Instead we had to record in a studio and let the engineer produce our "DEMO TAPE" after a £300 charge ! ATB Eddie
Prophonics 2029 Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 Agree with you Eddie but a studio is a place where you have a room with no interaction from the out side world, no traffic, dogs barking or even other speakers to react with the sound being produced. So you do or did get more for your money .
Guest eddiep Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 Agree with you Eddie but a studio is a place where you have a room with no interaction from the out side world, no traffic, dogs barking or even other speakers to react with the sound being produced. So you do or did get more for your money . Yeah I know we paid for that service but there wasn't any alternative back then and many can't find that kind of money needed to record in a studio. Especially nowdays. Digital technology has opened a new way to record and made it much more accesible to many. In my mind that's a good thing and expand's boundaries musically. For many amature musician's / music enthusiasts funds are limited as they are for everyone really and home recording is a very cost effective way for those involved and creative enough to try. I in no way endorse or side with bootleg's being made or produced for financial gain fuelled by greed and essentially having total disrespect for those who wrote, performed or contributed to any form of artistic creation. If anything I detest it! I'm just trying to say that that there is a bigger picture and for the group of people I've mentioned the service on offer of cutting a 45 from a recorded mp3 and the like is another way for artist's (amature or pro) to produce a finished item of their time, effort and skill (or not as the case may be !) and be proud of. Just another side of the coin before any witch hunt becomes a revolution and all recording musical service's on offer are targeted as pure evil !! Lol. ATB Eddie

ATB Eddie Great read for me Eddies, and well constructed.. I too was in a band in the 90s and we were held back with recordings as the studio was was out of our reach with finance... We had to save and scrapethe cash together... Many views and opinion on this thread, was always gonna be that way... We will keep an eye on this and urge folk to think before they post, just taking a few extra seconds to engage the brain does have its advantages..

Of interest to folk as the carver business is second nature now.... Isn't it that as long as it's a one-off and for your own home listening pleasure you're entitled to cut a carver of a track you don't own the rights for? And you're not allowed to sell it on?
Guest James Trouble Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 (edited) The prowlng wolves working themselves up at the smell of blood is pretty silly and in my opinion short sighted. If the authorities got hold of the scene it would probably be finshed as we know it. Most of those that are held up on the alter of northern soul as DJs and authorities, with very few exceptions, would be put through the shredder by the tax man. What gives anyone the right to hoover up records and turn them around for a profit without paying tax? All those DJs who sit in the record rooms, look at their ebay accounts, see what tunes they buy then look at their sales boxes. No tax is being paid there. You don't need to be a genius to work out who the biggest tax dodgers are. How many people on here are buying records on ebay and declaring value as $5 gift? How many promoters pay tax on club profits? How many DJs declare earnings from DJ bookings? And how many of you take illegal drugs, the profits of which could well fund terrorism or organised crime? How many of you drug and drive after going home from allnighters? Putting people's lives at risk? Keb got screwed by the tax man a few years ago and was forced to sell his records. The same would happen to many of the 'big' DJs and promoters on the scene. If the devil gets into the room there won't be any getting rid of him. So it's probably best not to open the door and invite him in, no matter how much you hate the person who Mr Lucifer wants to speak to... Still, the way I see it there is no place for bootleg bandits in this day and age although respect due to Kev for giving his side of the story. Things are rarely black and white in this world, and I doubt they are in this scenario. Edited December 13, 2010 by James Trouble

James I think you're slightly missing the point of the thread, which is commenting on the irony of a convicted copyright thief proselytising to others about the evils of copyright theft. Folks on the scene commit some and all of the heinous crimes you mention, and I can only count myself as a hardened repeat offender but I would never dream of threatening to shop someone else for exactly the crime I've committed myself. That would indeed be hypocritical.

Raremusicdirect Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 Besides all the above interesting information I would just add that people should be a little careful, the outgoing government sold off the reserves, spent all the income the country had, then in desperation printed money.........now as the Coalition tries to balance out the mess, Tax Inspectors NEED to raise every penny they can. Thats their dictate ! Expect Ebay investigations, increased customs duty checks, examination of private traders v business traders and the avoidance of tax paid etc.................. Its not a cheery subject prior Xmas, but I think a touch of caution and not highlighting the issues (drawing attention) to them might be sensible.......[ I know I am fuelling the fire a little!] .................who knows who is on here under alias' or even anonymous user.........I remember learning after many years that a Tax Inspector socialised in my company but never declared it, case he created enemies lol...............Of course those who are whiter than white in every complete aspect have nothing to fear, but maybe thats not so many of us........ (Simon Hunt excepted) If you want to know how intrusive such investigations are I could also write quiet a verse, but I closed mine out some years back and all I can advise is, don't lay yourself open for such an event it is indeed a nitemare...................

Its the hypocrisy of posting last week on the bootlegging thread he said " giveaway cds is killing the scene and its not legal " while at the same time being in court on these charges.. KTF or whatever you want... The timing of his comments was the oxygen to the fire.. I think we are very aware James as to what goes on, so why the need to put it in print on this public forum Would be pot kettle for many to take the moral highground, its the posts on bootlegging and Kev warning some of us that we are killing the scene with these cds .. I can't think of any number of free cds killing what i think is the scene... They could be hurting those that make a business of selling cds, is that the " scene' Pete Smith/ Kev Roberts... If many are wide of the mark with regards to the facts then don't you think it wise to put them straight ???? it could stop certain posts on this topic running away with themself?????
Kevinkent Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 (edited) WELL SAID, NO JUDGE + NO JURY = NO CONVICTION i.e INNOCENT MAN! You should perhaps read the whole thread. By Kev's own admission he was convicted on three trademark offences and was heavily fined. What this has to do with his events promotion escapes me. If you are trying to make the point that anyone who appears to succeed in making a business out of their love for Northern Soul is setting themselves up for a fall, and often for unfair criticism and the baying for blood by the masses, then I will agree with you. The thread starter hasn't had much to say on this apart from stirring old news up with a link, and then attempting to return the thread to discussion on an individual. Personally, I thought it had become much more interesting once we'd all put our daggers away and moved on to more general discussion. - Kev Edited December 13, 2010 by KevinKent

Goldsoul Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 (edited) In response to Mike's request for a clearer picture..... here we go(in hope!) The charges related to 3 vinyl singles only in breach of the Trademark act. The singles were traded with Robin Burnett, who as we all now know received 9 months for a string of offences along with his partner Alan Godfrey. Scener's will know them better as Amnesia Records, who were active in early 2007. Mine were 'infringement of trademark' which basically means I knew or ought to have known that the 3 titles were illegal. The case was not about bootlegs. As for everyone on here either supporting us or revelling in tittle tattle, let me give you a heads up. I'm £40,000 worse off in fines and legal costs. Trading Standards told me they are chasing others and read Soul Source as an 'intelligence tool' so please take them seriously. The government body are also linked up to HMRC and have Northern Soul under review. As the article Mike eluded to, the first report was untrue and corrected by the BPI. Bottom line is: 3 trademark offences equalled 40k in fine and legal. All clear and understood? I Edited December 14, 2010 by The Golden 101
Mrtag Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 I think JT is pointing out that there are many on this scene who are cheating the system in one form or another, promoting, buying and selling records and DJing. At the end of the day it is all taxable income and just how many declare it? How Many NS DJ's Actually Make any Money From DJing Most DJ's Get £50 For 1 Spot Usually The Majority Of That Goes On Fuel Without Taking Into Consideration Any Cost For Wear And Tear To Their Vehicle Plus Servicing Etc, Etc, Most Accountants Laugh When You Show Them Books For Djing And Usually Offset Record Costs Against Other Business Interests. The Bottom Line Is That The Quote By JT Is Totally Irrelevant To Piracy and Bootlegging Imho
