Guest GARV Posted December 7, 2010 Posted December 7, 2010 I have become more & more aware of the beach music scene in the USA but have never really given it much thought until recently when realising that we share a lot of records played on both scene`s. TBH i have absolutely no knowledge of its history or impact ....... so can anyone enlighten me Does the Beach scene have legendary venues & DJ`s Is it a rare record scene?, is it still going today?, was it a youth culture thing that like ours has grown older? Are there any particular soul artists connected with beach music, was there a fashion connected with it?. I`m just interested as to how close both scene`s are to each other, or not. Anyone on here ever a part of the Beach scene or have any experience of it. Garv
Chalky Posted December 7, 2010 Posted December 7, 2010 You need to get the book Heey Baby Days of Beach, Greg Haynes I think of top of my head the author. Fabulous book with some superb photos and scans. You need a coffee table though as it is too big to sit and hold.
Dave Rimmer Posted December 7, 2010 Posted December 7, 2010 search for Carolina Beach Music in google, you get lot's of hits that give the history etc
Modernsoulsucks Posted December 7, 2010 Posted December 7, 2010 (edited) Here's a link https://www.beachshag.com/ I was kinda involved in it from around '76 to 2000 from the point of view of swapping 45s with some of the guys over there including finding records unknown to them with the right beat. And attending the odd club whenever I got the chance. Your questions would take a book to answer. It does have similarities in that it faded a bit like Northern in the early 80's but underwent a massive revival. From my experience you won't hear anything 60's that you don't know. Since my first time at Crazy Zack's in Raleigh [along with Dave Raistrick] in '79 I've hardly heartd a 60's record in a club. On the radio, yes but again nowt obscure to correspond with Northern. Last time I went to a club in 2006 I was told by mates that vinyl is gone and even CDs are being replaced for DJ use by laptops. The dj in the club in Greensboro was definitely using that format. Here's a couple of tracks I remember being very popular in early 90's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4Aidp6REiQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfew49guhhM Final one is my biggest discovery. It went massive and got booted. It's absolutely bobbins! ROD Edited December 7, 2010 by modernsoulsucks
Goldsoul Posted December 7, 2010 Posted December 7, 2010 (edited) Good call from Rod. I presented a show for Beach Shag 10 years ago. John Hook is one of the best promoters of Beach music via his Radio shows. Chris Beachley a great source for Beach vinyl originals. Marian Carter's Ripete label issues a lot if it on cd and Willie C keeps the movement going with lots of 'Shag' dances in NC and SC. Start with these guys and work your way down. I even compiled a cd for the UK Market with Ripete aptly titled 'There Ain't Norhing Like Shaggin'. Sadly it didn't fair too well over here. I think the problem is, we love the 60's side from the Embers, Tams, O Kaysions and the Rarer end from Chuck Cockerham, The Nomads, Appreciations, Ellusions, Moses Dillard etc, but we clearly don't like the post 1975 end, which sounds a bit thin. Certainly a strong likeness to our scene. And a memo to Rod...... Do any Shagging while you were down there?? Lol Kev Edited December 7, 2010 by The Golden 101

Modernsoulsucks Posted December 7, 2010 Posted December 7, 2010 I was actually complimented on my shagging by a young lady who came up to me afterward. I was with Mr. Raistrick who proceeded to giggle and smirk like a naughty schoolboy. Last time I saw him he told me we later had to make a run for the car as the male clientele were obviously threatened by my shagging prowess. I can't remember that but he assures me we did. ROD

Soulfinger Posted December 7, 2010 Posted December 7, 2010 I even compiled a cd for the UK Market with Ripete aptly titled 'There Ain't Norhing Like Shaggin'. Sadly it didn't fair too well over here. I picked one up in King Bee at the weekend for £3. Bargain! I listen to 94.9 The Surf on internet radio quite a lot, consistently better music than most UK radio and the adverts are pretty funny...if ever my swimming pool needs tiling and I am in Carolina....
