Guest MBarrett Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 The Beatles have obviously been associated with quite a few R & B and early soul acts over the years. But I don't remember ever seeing Chuck Jackson's name mentioned before. I came across his name in an old Beatles "fan book" from circa 1963 which had been hidden away at my parents' house for all these years. The book has separate interviews with each of the Beatles and three of the four (John, Paul and Ringo) all named CJ as one of their favourite artists I don't think they covered any of his records live or on disc. But he was getting a few releases on Stateside so I wonder if it was just a bit of PR for one of their EMI stablemates. MB
Amsterdam Russ Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 (edited) The site Beatles Interviews.Org has an interview from a Detroit press conference on 6th September 1964 that goes thus: Q: "How do you like Detroit so far?" JOHN: "Great." PAUL: "What we've seen of it." (laughter) JOHN: "We see very little. The show, we enjoyed." Q: "Is it a disappointment not to see it?" JOHN: "No. We come here to play, not to see, you know." PAUL: "We saw a bit of it though." Q: "Does that noise out there go away with a little bit of cotton packed way deep in your ear so that the noise..." JOHN & PAUL: "No." JOHN: "We're used to it." GEORGE: "We're immune to it." Q: "It doesn't upset your musical balance?" PAUL: "It sounds nice." Q: "Which artist or musical group do you think has most influenced your music?" JOHN: (jokingly) "Nicki Cuff." PAUL: "Nicki Cuff, I'd say. No, uhh... American colored groups, mainly. And early Elvis Presley." GEORGE: "In fact, The Detroit Sound." JOHN: "In fact, yes." GEORGE: "In fact, yeah. Tamla-Motown artists are our favorites. The Miricles." JOHN: "We like Marvin Gaye." GEORGE: "The Impressions, Marvin Gaye." PAUL & GEORGE: "Mary Wells." GEORGE: "The Exciters." JOHN: "To name but eighty." RINGO: "Chuck Jackson." Q: "How many records have the Beatles sold?" RINGO: "No idea." The full transcript of the interview can be found HERE... Gene-r Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 (edited) Wonder if Elvis also had a thing for CJ? He covered 'Any Day Now' on the flip side of 'In The Ghetto' (unless he took a tip from Burt Bacharach and Hal David). Edited December 2, 2010 by Gene-R
