Garethx Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 Colin Dilnot probably has. I don't know if Colin's on here, but he probably knows more about the Stax story than the people who were there at the time!

Anybody met him / her? link Larry Nix - the most prolific engineer of the early 70's - or one of them. Think he also had a brother or relative in the biz as well - he appears on literally thousands of run out grooves.....over to Colin for the full run down...
Guest Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 Larry was the engineer who did the mastering for most of Stax's post 70 releases. His name doesn't always crop up on the sleeves of albums because others such William Brown - Randy's brother or Tom Nixon and others did the studio engineering. Larry has worked at the Ardent Studios on Madison in Memphis since the early 70's and has worked on countless Memphis recordings by soul, blues, country and pop artists. I met Larry a few years ago and he gave me a tour of the Ardent Studios which was used by Stax for recording and post-recording work. He is a top man and very friendly - he showed me the machine he used to cut all those classic Stax sides on. And for the anoraks - he has the complete mastering details of all Stax recordings - issued and unissued for the post 70's period. He did allow a European Stax fanatic to copy them all!!! He even dug out and photocopied my good friend Ernie Hines's album details and looked up a few unissued things which I was keen to know if they existed. His brother is Don Nix - who recorded for Stax and is a very good countryish singer/songwriter. I also met him on my last visit to Memphis when he dropped by the Royal Recording Studios while I was there - also a friendly guy. Best wishes Colin
