Dave Posted August 16, 2005 Share Posted August 16, 2005 Couldn't attend. surely you mean chose not to attend due to your changing priorities, oh and a scene that was suddenly hard work to keep going and wasnt presented to you in one neat venue. Some of us chose the scene over, or even as well as families etc, all through the 80's. Despite Bretts apology later I agree with him above, the 80's was when the scene became proper again and properly underground, the way it should be for many of us who very rarely attend due to current state. If staying underground means no more newcomers then so be it, selfish I know but so what it would mean a scene attractive to me and people who I think make the scene, not lots of people who can just pop down to their local sceneor who want to be somebody. And this is not a dig at newcomers, the ones who I have met (Shane, Baz are the type we want but lets get real these are the exception as Shane later points out. And before you spout about different types of music as you do later in thread, I buy everything from 1960 to 2005, but if I want to hear funk or reggae or house I will go to to the sort of place where I will hear the real deal, not a watered down night where they play something to appeal to the masses. I have for years agreed with the lets drop Northern for Rare soul or something but seeing your logic for it makes me think there is good reason to keep it as Ken says, as all you seem to want to do is create a watered down scene, I often regret i dont make more of an effort these days but reading posts like your various ones on this thread makes me remember why I dont bother. Jock link I did manage to get out of the house occassionally in the 80s, but yes, I do mean that generally I "chose not to attend due to my changing priorities". To my mind I got those priorities right. I didn't take to the term fair weather soulie as since those priorities have changed I put a fair few miles in attending events. Why is it so important to you that the scene should be underground? I personally value the quality of the music, the company and the events in general more than exclusivity....and there are events today where that quality is as good as it's ever been. When I "spouted", as you put it, about a diversity of black music, I also said "as long as it is good...", so why do you interpret that as wanting a "watered down night..."? If, as you say, you don't make much of an effort to attend these days....what qualifies you to say that X or Y "are the type we want"? I still believe there is only handfulls of youngsters popping up here and there. I know you are still in your twenties, i am 31. We are the real minority and i cant see that changing to be honest. I can see the scene shrinking dramatically in about 10 years time but i aint worried to be honest. I believe there will be one or two events a month in a small club somewhere and all those who remain will have to travel that bit further and not as frequent. The quality should be second to none though when all those quality records that are deep in collections end up in new hands. I hope I am wrong. Shane link I think you're probably right. No doubt there'll still be the occasional big oldies event but I think the 'hardcore' of the scene will be what you describe. If the music does grab a younger (teenage) generation I suspect it'll be in a different context to our current scene... there are already more 'mainstream' clubs that play northern mixed in with indie/ general 60s/ all sorts of stuff (I went to one nearly ten years ago which is still going). Considering the music we listen to is mostly over 30 years old I think it's always going to appeal to someone and not just disappear.... but I also think we should just relax and enjoy what we've got - here and now. With some reflection i really meant that any outside venture ie media etc, always seem to concentrate on the so called Golden Age (and hey i don't doubt that it was...) of the middle 70's. But i only know the 80's and not the the years before, so i can only empathise with my own personal experiences of this scene, just irks me when the "Outside Media" overlook these other eras. I have worked with, gone out with, many, many people who attended all the legendary past events and always enjoyed and respected the stories of the old days, and i always will, guess i was just born "Too Late". Could be a devil however and say that you have lost a bit of quality from Sheridans as no Butch (probably not as bad as he plays elsewhere lots) and no Cliff Steele, one of the top guys for my musical taste (note my taste not everyone elses ), however am being pedantic and looking for things to moan about there!!! And now that the secret is out, let me fill you guys in on a few things. The story of 'Souled Out' is set around the Wigan Casino in 1974. It is not a documentary, it is a fictional tale. But every measure is being taken to ensure that every attention to detail will be loving recreated in the making of the film. A vast amount of research has been conducted in an attempt to make the sights and sounds of the Casino as authentic as possible. For me, this is the secret of credible filmmaking. Anyone who every spent a night at the Casino has very special memories of their time spent there. Those memories are wrapped in a nostalgia that is still played out today at All-Nighters up and down the country. We become very protective of these memories, of the scene, as if it's our special secret that nobody else would understand. "You had to be there" I hear people say. "You wouldn't understand what it was like". Well I want people to finally understand what it was like to feel your heart pounding out on the floor. I don't claim to be the ultimate expert on Northern Soul, nor do I claim that this film is the definitive film of the scene. There are many different stories that can be told. Everyone has their own story to tell. 'Souled Out' is our story and we plan to tell it as best we can. I hope over the coming months you can make a contribution to this film in various ways. Everyones memories of Wigan are special and personal and quite often conflict. It seems to me that you are doing your best to portray the feeling of actually being there. It is hard sometimes to portray something that was so special to many of us in so many different ways and sometimes people get emotional when they feel that their memories are being (trying to find the right word but this will have to do) raped and pillaged ( sorry that was three words). Our funny little world we call Northern Soul has been badly portrayed in the past by people who do not understand it or have used it purely as a commercial vehicle and I think some of the negatives posts are just a reflection of what has happened in the past. I for one wish you well and I hope the film is everything you hope it to be. And for all those of you who have been negative about it I suggest, that like me, hold on to your own memories of Wigan and I hope that the film brings back memories of the earlier days of Wigan that I remember (OK so I'm old).
