Dont have big egos oh no ,you and your m8 paulie are,nt doing to bad you sarcastic pair of cunts.Oh and just to set the record straight both my parents are irish and i lived in dublin for 3 yrs so i have been there once or twice, but feel free to visit any of my venues to continue this.

Andy

have to say I think name calling of this nature is bang out of order and inappropriate on a forum like this. I'm all for heated exchanges of views but lets keep it on topic and not let it disintegrate into schoolyard crap like this.

For the record I agree with you Ireland is NOT a hot bed of Northern Soul.......don't really think anywhere is outside the NW UK and probably London. That probably makes the fact that we have anything on at all all the more impressive.

What we have is a young, dedicated, enthusiatic and thriving but ultimately seperate scene...........as a result those involved and who struggle (and that's not an over-statement) to keep it going naturally get very defensive at the slightest hint of dis-respect for their efforts.

I'm not suggesting Andy that you do dis-respect anybodys efforts.....you say you run nights so you know the problems.......just that your comments might have been taken up wrong.

If so I think you should apologise for your name-calling.....

Tell you what.............why not have an Irish night........we'll turn up mob handed.....you can drag your parents along and we'll regale them with stories of the old sod!!!!!!!!

best

I made enquiries, they only want dancers between the ages of 16 to 30 in attendance.

They had scouts at 100 last Sat. They were after young looking dancers. My mate tried to schmooze on of them

I just hope they don't play on the drug side, there is more to it than that.. but it does make a nighter better

:D   :D    :D

Mischief - I agree about the drug scene, all scenes have that, doesnt need to be emphasized - you can take it or leave it - I personally leave it but doesnt mean I would criticize others who dont. But to me the scene is about the music (and dancing) when the bring the drugs into it, it takes that part of it away!

same old story, only a few I could name for that! There was a vid wanting male dancers only years ago (Paul Weller) thought that was sexist! Then another wanting under 30 (I was honest enough to say how old I was!) that's ageism - they never learn do they!

Yes but what good will a movie be about the youth culture of the 70's when every one in it is over 30, look at it from that perspective :D All they are doing is trying to create 'how it was'

I think it's if you can get away with being between those ages...Steve Cato has been in a couple of these now (Soul Function and another one filmed in Scotland that hasn't seen daylight yet) and it's a while since he saw 30... :D

Anyway if you want my two pennyworth (no????) I don't think the film's gonna get younger people swarming back to the scene...I keep hearing the This england analogy but remember in those days there were only 3 channels on telly and nowt much else going on...that was more the reason people were attracted to Wigan etc by watching the programme. These days in the current lowest common denominator X Factor/Pop Idol, text a pizza society it really would be too much like hard work for most under 30s to seek out a northern soul event I think.

Must agree with you son, the film would look a bit rediculous with all us 40somethings pretending to be 18 again.

Why don't you audition Baz then I could play your mother, see it now, rebellious son - nagging mother, no acting required there then.

its not sexism or ageism. We are talking about the arts industry here and not call centre employment. If you wanted to enforce sexism and ageism into the arts industry most movies and pop videos would look very strange. Imagine the writer of Billy Elliott for example having to cast a 55 year old chinese man....it wouldnt work. Political correctness gone mad again on here.

I have to agree with bazbond. If it's a retrospective look at the scene, then they need to convince the audience of this by using dancers of simialr ages to those that went to Wigan and the likes of. It was an underground youth movement afterall, when it started.

Also sorry karenb, but I have to disagree that wanting only male dancers is sexist. If an artist, film producer/ director etc has an idea of what they want their video/film to look like (and they are stumping up the cash) then they have the right to do it how they want. How many men do you think complained about Robert Palmer's 'Addicted to love' video? The only male present is Palmer himself, all the dancers/models are female. Is that sexist?

I agree with you... as someone said I can't see a film about something that happened in the 70s attracting loads of people to present day clubs. Must admit though am getting a bit tired with the 'we need new blood, what can we do?' conversations - I'd be happy to see a younger generation carrying the scene on but as Brett says, scenes evolve, I don't think they can be forced into a certain direction...

Incidentally the Scottish film has been shown, it's a great piece of work but I think they gave up on trying to find 'young' dancers though and just went for good dancers.

2.5 million budget.. Not alot of dosh for a movie but look at the return trainspotting got at the box office and video, DVD sales etc.

Big seventies revival going on at the moment re fashions etc, and "our early days " were a big part of that era, especially when the casino made it to billboards top nite clubs ratings....

people came to northern venues back then "just to be curious" some stayed and alot went....

Ffs, is it a trait on this scene to rip things apart before it's even happened? this movie is going to be a piece of ENTERTAINMENT, as long as it's a well written work, well reserched and as authentic as it can be what is the problem, you all know what happens when it's left to so called people who know best or think they do i.e. 'Crazy World Of Northern Soul' he had the chance to tell it like it is and failed by miles ok that was a work of fact rather than fiction but this new project is being made by professional film makers who at the very least know how to put such a thing together, i'm sure they are doing their research and if they are guided by the right people then i'm sure it will work out, sometimes we act like a secret society who hate so called outsiders fucking with us, a trait i'm affraid which can only put newcomers to the flock off, we should be proud and honoured that the scene, it's rich history and music warrents the interest of a major production such as this, the subject matter will i'm sure make for a very good way to spend two hours at the pictures.

Authenticity is the key here, getting all the detail corret, it's going to be a period piece set in 1974 so i'm sure the feel and mood will be reflected with a back drop of the Northern scene, we forget sometimes that this scene is also about people who have a passion for the music from all walks of life and backgrounds, i've always said there is a drama here and now perhaps part of the story and the magic can be shared with a bigger audience, lastly i'm sure not everyone who saw Qudrophina for example were mods but was still enjoyed by a bigger audience than the few who were actually there first time round, then the big mod revival happened did it not back in 1979? i suggest mainly because of the efforts of Phil Daniels, Sting etc. and of course the subject, i also believe that if you are gonna tell a story or involve a unique cult then the narative should include worts and all, tell it like it was, tell it like it is and be true to the topic and in no way airbrush it.

Regards - Mark Bicknell.

Hi, Any of you guys know about this

SOULED OUT

IN DEVELOPMENT

Developed with the support of Northern Film and Media.

SHORT SYNOPSIS

It's 1974, an age of industrial unrest, beer at fifteen pence a pint, and flares wide enough to sweep the pavements.

This is the moment for two young lads from the North East of England as they throw themselves into their own hilarious coming of age, set against the backdrop of the explosive Northern Soul movement, the dance culture that goes on to drive Britain through its own cultural rites of passage.

They are holding auditions here in Dublin today for NS Dancers. Don't know weather its being filmed over here or not.

link

Just got to add that this has been one of the best threads on here for ages whistling.gif

I'm surprised that Paul Sadot isn't in this what with his mate from Dead Mans Shoes in it too...he doesn't look any older than Paddy Considine and he can do all that 70s northern dancing with the floorwork, spinning etc. Would have thought he'd have been perfect for a part in this, especially cos of his knowledge of the scene back then having been part of it plus , obviously, directing the Wigan play.

"The film is being shot as a co production between Ireland (dublin) and the north of England with post picture in the uk and post sound in Ireland.its core aims and media strategy" is aimed at

1." its disciples

the primary audience aged 15-21 of both men and women who will be attracted by the main characters storyline in the film, the setting, the dancing and of course the music.

Those that go to the northern soul clubs, wera the t.shirts and know the music and the dances"...

2." MTV activities Aged between 16-24 .. this group likes to be in the know about all the latest trends"..... nuff said on this group....

3. Active Passives... this is the group that is looking for quality film experiences"

Media

This is the section that will give most cause for concern re our group me thinks as the mission statements here are gonna create the most interest.

Stage 1

" the word is on the street- the much anticipated Souled out is going to be a classic. Communication via music and lifestyle mags as well as a cool and sophisticated online campaign will form the basis of the activity. Teaser copy on street corners and the underground will act like a wink to those in the know that this long awaited film is on its way and key slots on MTV will give them a taste of what is to come"

Stage 2

"TV activity will broaden out to encompass more of the music stations as well as a few key late night slots on specifically chosen sat channels. The reveal part of the tease campaign will reveal itself on the streets and in the underground. Screens in bars and clubs will be playing clips and magazines read by young, trendies will feature cool ads. As the release approaches the hip amoungst the 16-24 age group will all be talking about this this much anticipated film... At the same time the first single for the film will be released with a video of clips from the film and a mobile phone campaign".

stage 3

" With the interest fimly established and word of mouth taking its course we broaden out our TV activity to encompass the older, more sophisticated film goer. Active passives As a release date approaches Souled out will light up the streets via a back illuminated 6 sheet campaign. It will fill the airwaves via a heavy weight radio campaign"

Phew so there we have it ... all quotes are from the package e mailed to me this am from the films office in Newcastle... So come on lets have more comments views etc re this.....

Oh well I missed that bit didnt I so what about suggestions for lead parts then.....

I suggest no female floorwork dancers as the the boobs get in the way... and Karen I too, can dance just as well as a bloke to the stompers and spinners, but from a self gratifying position, there aint nowt so sexy as a soulboy in full flow on the dance floor specially when they are fit :yes:

As for the gay thing.... Scotland.... Kilts/Skirts... come on...... :P
