Lofty
Hi All Just a quick warning about a popular design of record box- and my experience at the weekend of the handle and box coming apart (result, box of 200 finest sounds bouncing down the stairs..eek). In the interest of avoiding legal action Im going to pass on manufacturers/suppliers details, but you might know what Im on about if I describe the box as follows: aluminium faced plywood construction, 200 45 box, single plastic handle, retails at about £30. (They also come in 100 45 capacity ally or black finish). In my experience the current construction of the 200 45 box isnt up to the job, as I found out when simply walking down the stairs. No significant stresses involved, I wasnt swinging it about or anything. Turns out that the black plastic is secured by two self tapper screws from inside, and on inspection - they had simply ripped out allowing the box and handle to part. As I said earlier, box bounces down the stairs, taking a nice dent in the wall on the way down. The good news is the contents were unaffected by this, proving that the basic construction is good. I also went on to modify the handle by drilling it out, and using two 5mm bolts to resecure it (not a difficult job, but not one everyone would fancy). Im confident that the bolted-configuration should hold, so personally I plan to carry on using this design (expecting to modify any further boxes I buy), especially as I now know the impact protection is good. Incidently, I dont think the problem would exist on 100 45 boxes, as the weight should be within the capacity of the screws. Bit of a dull message I know, but thought you might want to hear about it before someone has a less happy outcome. Lofty Link to comment Social source share
Guest noss
Contact the manufacturers, they are probably unaware of the design fault. Link to comment Social source share
Guest Baz
Self tappers holding the handle on a disaster waiting to happen not having a clue what make of box you are on about, guess it just goes to prove that a little extra spent on a house for your 45's is a must Link to comment Social source share

Guest Baz
I use a solid constructed aluminium Numark 200 box, not a cheap one at £65 but well worth the extra cash especially to house your cherrished 45's, its got a chunky black leather (or what looks like leather?) handle that is very well rivited on to the box.......nice solid design, just dont swing it about too much when your getting in taxi's Link to comment Social source share

Ged Parker
Covers 33 will make you a custom made 'full flight' case at a very reasonable price. Not sure they can be beaten on quality or price skimp on the cash at your peril. I think the £30 ones you can open them with any set of keys or a lollipop stick If you want to frighten yourself value the contents of a 200 box (even 200 £5 boots) and then think about the wisdom of using a £30 box to keep them secure. Guest Trevski
Wow deja-vu! I got mine from covers, and they seem pretty good. However, I was going to do my spot at the York all-dayer when the lid (which was not locked) flew off, scattering 45's down the stairs! Fortunatly all survived, but it was a 'panic is on' situation Thanks for the handle tip,I shall be adding a couple of bolts forthwith! I will be looking out for a better one. As Ged says it's scary what value is in a playbox these days. An 'average decent' tune is probably £50-£75. most are in the £100-150 to £300-£400 range, without talking megga stuff! If that gives a conservative average of £100 per disc, thats twenty grand on its way down the stairs Scary or what!! hipshaker 05
as has been said ............... you can't go wrong with a nice heavy duty one. i've got a couple, a 200 and a hernia inducing 600. rivets and holes for padlocks ..... no problems so far and if i swing them around whatever i am swinging them near wil come off worse. as i remember the 200 was about £70 and the 600 about £110. money well spent. and what was money equally well spent was £45 on one of these trolleys to cart the bloody 600 one around on: https://www.nuloop.com/details_dj_e.php?art=31423 Link to comment Social source share

Guest Trevski
Just got this from Covers 33, I let them know of the design 'fault'! Thank you very much for bringing this to our attention, I can assure you no one has brought this problem to our notice and if you can let the people on the site know we are addressing this complaint I would appreciate this very much. Also the case you mention is advertised as "Light Weight". But we also sell the Wooden DJ case that is much stronger it has a cloth cover it either Grey fleck or Black finish Its has reinforced plastic corners and the handle is bolted on. These are made in 3 sizes to hold 100 , 200 or 300 7" singles and can be custom made to any size. We have also got "Full Flight Aluminium" cases as above made of wood with aluminium finish and heavy duty edges and corners they can also be custom made as well as the standard sizes Regards Cameron Link to comment Social source share
