Suinoz Posted October 11, 2010 Posted October 11, 2010 Hiya guy's, would anyone please have any info on this record ? I found it in a small record store, it's in really good condition and play's perfectly but i have never seen one before. The record is single sided with a plain white label on one side. It looks original. The information on the printed label / play side is REMMIX RECORDS, RR-4422-AX , SUSAN COLEMAN THE AGE OF THE WOLF, Marlin Greene, prod. P BALLANGER. Could it be a small run promo ?? It's a really good dancer. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance, Tony. OZ.
Anoraks Corner Posted October 11, 2010 Posted October 11, 2010 Hi Tony, It is an established Oldie/Classic from the 7Ts (Mecca before Casino - someone will confirm), that was also bootlegged at the time. The original has a Nashville Matrix machine stamp in the deadwax. I've always had a soft-spot for it...like the flipside too!

Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted October 11, 2010 Posted October 11, 2010 I love this record - so UN-Muscle Shoals (which is where it was recorded....). I was delighted that my colleague Alec Palao and I found the original demo (by Jeanie Greene) on our first trip to FAME studios this year, but much as I like that, too, I do prefer Susan's... Could someone throw a scan of an original up on here? I've bought (and returned) two copies which have purported to be originals in recent years. It would be nice to have a scan of an original somewhere that I could point people to next time I have the chance to buy it.... ...unless you have one for sale, Mr. Flynn?
Pete S Posted October 11, 2010 Posted October 11, 2010 There's two different boots of this, one is styrene and easy to spot, the other is vinyl and has a pretty poor Nashville Matrix copy, it's much bigger than it should be (the writing, not the record!). Dave, I've never heard of this being played at the Mecca, pretty sure it was a Russ discovery and exclusive to Wigan to start with. Possibly East Coast too.

Hiya Pete, I thought you might shed some light on this one mate. When do you think the one i have was cut? It has a blank white label on the reverse side, it has the grooves but no sound has been recorded onto it. The label on the sound side is printed in red. Hoping you can advise, ATB Tony. OZ.

Weird that they did it one sided but like the others, it'll be from around the middle of 1977.

So even if it is a bootleg it might be a rare one after all eh?? Gotta say i have never seen a one sided record form that era. Beats me why they would have done it like that. Oh well i will keep hold of it rather than consign it to the trash bin. Tony.

But I think/hope this is an original:
Guest Lobster Madras Posted October 11, 2010 Posted October 11, 2010 I didn't know it was booted, so have to check my copy later. But I think this is an original: The look a like boots were everywhere, and are dead easy to spot as the nashville matrix is written in, not stamped.. The type is less defined too.. Think the boots were whiter and shinier labels too.. The one sided boots were about of other tracks... Barbara English on Aurora or example...... but with plain white labels ?... maybe the one sided one was earlier as the look a likes were numerous and around for years ?? !!

They did Barbara English and Ronnie Forte (terrible quality) at the same time but the Susan Coleman was out before those two.

I too have a soft spot for this one,the ending makes it for me where she sings "girls keep your distance" and i love songs that end on the up,others spring to mind are Think Smart,Unsatisfied, must make a list one day.
Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 Anyone know this by her: I've heard two demos of this song (which is actually called 'Does Anybody Know What Love Is') - Dan Penn's own demo and one that the tape box just credited as 'girl' Would LOVE to hear (and own) this 45 - any chance of a soundfile so I can see if it;s the same as the demo that i know?

Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 ...I'd need a soundfile before I even considered thinking about laying out that kind of money for any record that I'd never knowingly heard...
Steve G Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 I think I've got an album by her, unless I am very much mistaken......I'll try and find it...
Steve G Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 I'm mistaken confusing her with Mary Saxton
Richard Free Posted August 19, 2017 Posted August 19, 2017 Just picked up "does anybody know " on us trip very nice I am guessing she was from the Alabama area .i will post pics and soundclip when back home
Ian Parker Posted August 20, 2017 Posted August 20, 2017 Ive asked this question .... The Nashville matrix is the give away. The colon , after the print 'produced by' is missing on the bootleg I seem to remember . Joe whittle has an original. The difference is clear once you see one
