North O The Borders Input Over The Years

Recommended Posts

Ye know I've been on this wonderful scene for close on 27 years, not always dedicated! But definately in my moisturizing years I get it...I've got so many great friends from south of the border, some have passed away....

I feel that Scotlands input into this scene that we love gets forgotten....both the punters that travelled and the dj's that Scotland have contributed..

Now I'm not active on the scene or go to many events these days but Im now of the grumpy age!!!!

I wish some of the younger soulies to this site knew how much Scotland played a part in this northern scene that we love.

Buses upon buses from Scotland....and buses upon buses traveled to Scotland.

Let's not forget Scotand

Hi Andy, hows it going! There's still a lot of us on here y'ken!

Might be an ex-pat now (Yorkshire!) but will never forget the 80's / early 90s Scottish scene, from my formative Fife years ( the Crown (Thornton) / Glenrothes), the Fife minibus thing for 5+ years (LOADS of superb nights, niters and dayers), and of course, Allanton (Shotts). I'm still buying stuff now I heard 20-25 years ago in these places. The Stafford influence (sounds and philosophy) was very clear, but the Scottish scene definitely had its own identity too.

Big up for yourself Andy, Alan & Steve (of course!), Jock, Keith, Jim, all the other usual DJ suspects, and to everybody involved in the scene at the time!

was just talking to Tef about this at his 50th couple of weeks ago, the Scottish contribution to the soul scene has been massive, where would the scene be witout John Anderson for a start?

i live in Aberdeen and even tho i dont travel nearly as much as used to it still makes me laugh when i hear punters south of the border complain that took a whole 2 hours to get such and such a night, laugh.gif

we had many great nighters over the years but Shotts was without a doubt the pinnacle of the scottish soul scene, the old guard had faded away in early 80's and what was left were the serious collectors and punters, as ive always said Shotts was the best of the scottish and english scene together at the same and the music that was played reflected that thumbsup.gif

Andy my old mate

Scotlands input to the scene is definitely not forgotten by this 'tyke' now living near Glasgow.

Some fantastic all nighters up here; getting picked up by Guys coach at the Tickled Trout just outside Preston and coming up to Glenrothes. Driving up to Allanton with the Brennans (picking up Kev & Claire 'cos their car had broke down) - great days and great people indeed! I even got a DJ spot at Allanton thanks to that very nice man Jim O'Hara.

Shame there 'aint much going on these days - bout time something big happened up here. Try going to the Groovesville thing at the Mono cafe last Friday of the month like Ali & I did last week 'cos it would make you weep.....

Here, here.

The 'youngsters' you speak of only need to read the various threads on Allanton to see the respect that was generated for 'our' scene back then. Allanton. Glenrothes, The Kilt, etc,etc Scotland more than held it's own.

Not so sure about nowadays however...................

I have been to some of my best allnighters in Scotland in the early 80's Abeerdeen Music Hall, Dundee etc. The scottish are always brilliant. Made some really good friends over the years at the casino and Morecambe Pier. Some of the best dancers are from Scotland Stewart Spence etc. XXX

Hey up Joan...........Shotts???? Think you'll find it was Allanton Miners Welfare Club..... :wave:yes.gif

It was indeed. 'Shotts' used to get referenced because Allanton was nothing more than a one-road village and no bugger would ever find it without heading for nearby Shotts first. It's no bustling metropolis either, but has the dubious benefit of being home to HMP Shotts, which at least means the town appears on road signs!

I could never forget Scotland Andy!

Without doubt some of the best nights I have ever had on this scene were with you guys.

If I had the chance to relive one allnighter again - without doubt it would be Shotts!

Same here Joan.

The mob I knock around with are from all over, Aberdeen to London and are friends for life. Was having a bevvy tinged converstion whilst on my hols last year with Kitch, Julia, Teff, Sharon and Lorraine Bennett about what was the catalyst that brought us all together. Obviously it would be a nighter. It wasn't stafford, 100 club, Blackburn or Lifeline. We agreed on a beat that it was a little working mens club in Allenton. I can't pay enough respect to those North of the border.

Hope you enjoy your trip up here, bring a warm jacket.

Glenrothes was indeed a fantastic venue thanks in no small part to the messrs Walls.. Their vision and drive made it certainly one of the best venues I ever went to, so many great memories of the YMCA.

Now, what a bout a reunion.....Alan?

We Scottish were truly blessed back then with some tremendous venues, DJ's (native and visitors) and music.

Forgive me Mr B, may I colour this one in? The scene in full: a modest family home in he former mining village of Allanton. A telephone in the hall rings, answered by Mrs O'Hara (matriarch)

Mrs O'Hara : "Hello"?

Speed Addled English Oaf : "Is that Rough Cut"?

Mrs O'Hara : "No, it's his Mum"

Speed Addled English Oaf : "A'riiight Rough Cut! When's next Scotland on"?

Mrs O'Hara : "it's the last Saturday of the month"

Speed Addled English Oaf : "Crackin mate. See ya then"!

In those days, Scotland only got switched on in the last Saturday of the month. I blame Thatcher....

Gary, it never ceases to pleasantly surprise me when I see such praise for the YM nighters. We look back and think it was helluva hard work - trying to black-out the windows on the Saturday afternoon, hiring and assembling portable staging, the innevitable problems with terrible decks, hassle with the local fannies who tried to get in, trying to keep the more 'chemically refreshed' (me included) out of the way from YM staff - looking back my immediate impression is that we didn't have the chance to enjoy it, but when I put my mind to it there are loads of great memories. Really delighted to know so many folk rated it.

Many thanks Joan, hope you're all good and well!

Without wishing to sound cliquey, we knew our fellow Stafford/60's Newies/Messhead/open-minded types 'got it', it was more organisational problems that tended to cloud our memories. So glad it's just Steve and I traumatised by the nightly hassles!
