Guest Posted September 26, 2010 Posted September 26, 2010 Good morning, Does anyone know anything about Gay-Shel label specifically #404. It is a song called May I Love You b/w I've Got to Go. It is credited by Big Bo and the Arrows, featuring the Four M's. If you look in the Mansip guide, there is no listing under Big Bo. However, under The Four M's, it is listed as Gay Shell (two l's) with the same two titles, and a value of 1,000 pounds. I can't find anything about "the Four M's" I have the record, just wondering if it's the same. I do know that Big Bo is Big Bo Thomas a Texas soul icon. Any info would be appreciated!!!

Guest Posted September 26, 2010 Posted September 26, 2010 i'm sure sausse played this cover up many moons ago at the wilton and 100 club i now this doesn't help just remember him having it regards johno I noticed that the words "second issue" appeared in my box up at the top. Is that someone trying to tell me that the record I am describing is a second issue?
boba Posted September 26, 2010 Posted September 26, 2010 I noticed that the words "second issue" appeared in my box up at the top. Is that someone trying to tell me that the record I am describing is a second issue? no, it's just a message board "ranking" of your user, given that you don't have a lot of posts, it doesn't have anything to do with your actual post. you move up the ranking latter once you have more posts on the site.
Soulcarp Posted September 26, 2010 Posted September 26, 2010 I noticed that the words "second issue" appeared in my box up at the top. Is that someone trying to tell me that the record I am describing is a second issue? bet you was sweating then lol by the way great record regards johno
Guest Posted September 26, 2010 Posted September 26, 2010 bet you was sweating then lol by the way great record regards johno Thank you!!!! I may just put it up for auction soon, I think it probably is an original. My theory is Big Bo put his name on it as the Four M's weren't well known, and it's Big Bo's label so he could easily do that....
Guest Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 Found out it is the same 1000 pound value....thanks all for reading!!!
Corbett80 Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 Four Ms are from Jarvis Christian College Texas (according to Hoss Allen) and perform an amazing live version of Monkey Time on The Beat!!!! from 1966.
Anoraks Corner Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 The James Marsh titles on the same label (albeit these are yellow) are also powerhouse crunching Texas thumpers!

Pomonkey Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 (edited) <<7968 James Lynn Marsh - Big Bo & The Arrows- Do What You Want To / Do You Miss Me>> Great but not as good as his ASTOUNDING 45 on Rainbow 401 R.L. Griffin - Big Bo & The Arrows- The Ting-A-Ling / I’ll Follow You terrible a-side (it was his nickname too) but the b-side "I'll follow you" is lights out fantastic, especially when the organ cranks in at the end Edited September 27, 2010 by pomonkey

Mattbolton Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 Thanks for showing me the label for this. It's been a fave of mine for many years but there's very little about it. Probably cos very few people have one. Butch said it took him 25 to get a better copy than his previous one. Which only ended up being VG! Have begged him to see it ever since! A superbly rare record that got lost in the dusts of time. Thanks again for that!

Anoraks Corner Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 202 Fred Lowery - Big Bo & The Arrows- I'm Sorry / You're Not Worth the Tears This one also came out on Atco...and the best James Marsh track is missing from the Gay-Shel listing within this thread!
Marc Forrest Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 This one also came out on Atco... Also worth noting that all the ATCO copies I had were misspressed... Marc
Marc Forrest Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 Found out it is the same 1000 pound value....thanks all for reading!!! only 400+ USD on ebay...why didn´t you let us know you put it up there...wouldn`t have minded a bid myself. Ah, well.
Corbett80 Posted October 11, 2010 Posted October 11, 2010 Had a watch on this thought it would go for a lot more. It was vg with no soundfile if i remember rightly? Gorgeous record.

Guest stylebiter Posted January 8, 2013 Posted January 8, 2013 Hey everybody, I've included the Four M's audio along with 4 others on the label in a recent Gay Shel feature on my blog at https://blog.rehashmedia.com. I've also tried to assemble the most complete Gay Shell discography that I could. If you have any additions or additional info on the label/release I'd love to hear them. Thanks ! -c

I wonder if the 1002 has another number on it?

Added to the discog. And can anyone confirm the existence of R.L. Griffin — Big Bo & the Arrows: If I Didn’t Know Better / I’ve Got to Go On? I read that in a RL interview but am thinking RL could be confusing this with his record on Ride: https://www.collectorsfrenzy.com/details/180950304128/Northern_Soul_RB_Mod_45_RL_GRIFFIN__PACESETTERS_If_I_Didnt_Know_RIDE_HEAR

Pete S Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 Best thing I have heard on the label... Would hate to hear the worst on the label if that's the best! Pedestrian 60's soul sounding like a million other records. Suppose it's rare though so that's alright.

Also the Gay Shel is mentioned in McGrath's Soul Discography and at this site here https://www.soulsides.co.uk/western/GAYSHEL.htm I've not seen it on Gay Shel but do have a note of it so I included it in my R L discography here https://www.sirshambling.com/artists_2012/G/r_l_griffin/index.php

Marc Forrest Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 What's the flip like Callum? Can you post a soundfile? Thanks. John. decent deep soul, you would like it (as I do too). if callum cant provide a file I will try to record it tomorrow.
Marc Forrest Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 Thanks Marc that would be very kind. just played my copy...flipside features a version of the standard "you`ll never walk alone". must have mixed it up from memory last night with "anymore" as this Gay Shel rel. by James Marsh does feature a nice deep soul recording in the shap of "I wont cry" which you`ll probably already know.
Marc Forrest Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 I`ll have a look Gay Shel 1002 doesnt feature a # 400. it carries TM-0663/2. Gay Shel 1004 however (James Marsh "Anymore/I Wont Cry") features a MW-400

I know what you mean about info being repeated all over the net - but since the tracks of the supposed Gay Shell 45 are different from the Ride 45 I'd say it was more likely than not that the Gay Shell exists.

Been looking for the wretched thing for a couple of months now...
Marc Forrest Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 okay, soundfile to follow later today ;)
