Big Bo & The Arrows And The Four M's

Good morning,

Does anyone know anything about Gay-Shel label specifically #404. It is a song called May I Love You b/w I've Got to Go. It is credited by Big Bo and the Arrows, featuring the Four M's. If you look in the Mansip guide, there is no listing under Big Bo. However, under The Four M's, it is listed as Gay Shell (two l's) with the same two titles, and a value of 1,000 pounds. I can't find anything about "the Four M's" I have the record, just wondering if it's the same. I do know that Big Bo is Big Bo Thomas a Texas soul icon. Any info would be appreciated!!!

I noticed that the words "second issue" appeared in my box up at the top. Is that someone trying to tell me that the record I am describing is a second issue?

no, it's just a message board "ranking" of your user, given that you don't have a lot of posts, it doesn't have anything to do with your actual post. you move up the ranking latter once you have more posts on the site.

bet you was sweating then lol by the way great record regards johno

Thank you!!!! I may just put it up for auction soon, I think it probably is an original. My theory is Big Bo put his name on it as the Four M's weren't well known, and it's Big Bo's label so he could easily do that....

This fantastic label originated from Dallas, Texas. Here you have a discography taken from https://www.texassoulrecordings.com ...always a good place to check...

201 Big Bo & The Arrows- Skibby Do / Big Bo's Duck

202 Fred Lowery - Big Bo & The Arrows- I'm Sorry / You're Not Worth the Tears

401 R.L. Griffin - Big Bo & The Arrows- The Ting-A-Ling / I'll Follow You

404 Big Bo & The Four M's- I've Got To Go / May I Love You

701 Big Bo & The Arrows- Big Bo's Iron Horse / Hully Gully

1002 Big Bo & The Arrows- Peacock Stomp / Well, Get It

1111 Big Bo Thomas & The Arrows- How About It Part 1 / Part 2

7868 Fred Lowery - Big Bo & The Arrows- Daddy's Baby / Work With Me Annie

7968 James Lynn Marsh - Big Bo & The Arrows- Do What You Want To / Do You Miss Me

8068 Big Bo & The Arrows- Ascot Shuffle Part 1 / Part 2

There`s at least one more Gay Shel 45 (in my collection) which ain`t in that discog but I am at the offcie and can`t tell you more other than its by R.L. Griffin. And no, I don´t mean his Panther 45.

<<7968 James Lynn Marsh - Big Bo & The Arrows- Do What You Want To / Do You Miss Me>>

Great but not as good as his ASTOUNDING 45 on Rainbow

401 R.L. Griffin - Big Bo & The Arrows- The Ting-A-Ling / I’ll Follow You

terrible a-side (it was his nickname too) but the b-side "I'll follow you" is lights out fantastic, especially when the organ cranks in at the end

The other one listed in R & B Indies is:

203 R L Griffin - Big Bo & The Arrows - "Give yourself another chance/Nobody cares"

Is that the one, Marc?

Thanks for showing me the label for this. It's been a fave of mine for many years but there's very little about it. Probably cos very few people have one. Butch said it took him 25 to get a better copy than his previous one. Which only ended up being VG! Have begged him to see it ever since!

A superbly rare record that got lost in the dusts of time.

Thanks again for that!

Four Ms are from Jarvis Christian College Texas (according to Hoss Allen) and perform an amazing live version of Monkey Time on The Beat!!!! from 1966.

Thanks man!!!! That's one of the things that was stumping me, the Four M's....I appreciate the info!! Nice falsetto harmonies on this record by the way!!

Hey everybody, I've included the Four M's audio along with 4 others on the label in a recent Gay Shel feature on my blog at https://blog.rehashmedia.com. I've also tried to assemble the most complete Gay Shell discography that I could. If you have any additions or additional info on the label/release I'd love to hear them. Thanks !

I Can add one more the Gay Shel listing

1004 - James Lynn Marsh w/Big Bo & The Arrows "Any More" / "I Won't Cry"

Pic is here

https://collectorsfre..._GAY_SHELL_HEAR

Can't lay my hands on my copy at the moment but it does beg the question of Gay Shell 1001 and 1003

nice. this one might also be listed as #400, based on the other number, and that would fill in the 400 series. I wonder if the 1002 has another number on it?

And can anyone confirm the existence of R.L. Griffin — Big Bo & the Arrows: If I Didn’t Know Better / I’ve Got to Go On?

I read that in a RL interview but am thinking RL could be confusing this with his record on Ride:

Tim Brown listed one in Nm condition for about £200 ,about 2 yr back ...

missed it myself but found it whilst doing a back search shortly afterwards :(

I was wrong .... it's here on one of his lists from 2011

Scroll down to number 106

The Ride 45 has a different flip. Also the Gay Shel is mentioned in McGrath's Soul Discography and at this site here

https://www.soulsides.co.uk/western/GAYSHEL.htm

I've not seen it on Gay Shel but do have a note of it so I included it in my R L discography here

thats exactly the point, you can find it mentioned but you just cant see a copy in reality/scan of it...it may exist but it also may be just a myth...replicated thru the net on and on again.

Thanks Marc that would be very kind.

just played my copy...flipside features a version of the standard "you`ll never walk alone". must have mixed it up from memory last night with "anymore" as this Gay Shel rel. by James Marsh does feature a nice deep soul recording in the shap of "I wont cry" which you`ll probably already know.

I know what you mean about info being repeated all over the net - but since the tracks of the supposed Gay Shell 45 are different from the Ride 45 I'd say it was more likely than not that the Gay Shell exists.

Thanks for the imfo Marc very helpful. I have the Gay Shell 45 with "I Won't Cry" on it - but can't find it. It's misfiled somewhere on my shelves. Been looking for the wretched thing for a couple of months now...
