 Hi All.....This was discussed a few weeks back, But I have to say You would think by now, more info would be known about the History. This is what I know my 1st copy in the link came from Con tempos in Hanaway Street London, 1971 it was Denise La Selle "love Reputation" Chess label, which had a UK release on the excellent Chess/Janus Mobile Disco LP.

The next bit..in 1972 at the DIVE BAR in HITCHIN, Mick Smith Played "just like the weather" Nolan Chance, on a all blue Constellation 45, right from that point, it become my #1 all time favorite record (still is), at that time almost every record that Mick played at the DIVE, I wanted. not long after Chris Burton released it on his Out of the past label (collecting OOTP was a great way for me to discover and take in rare Soul, a must complete series of 45s) in 1973 also just before the Casino opened I got Mak Johnson "Beautiful Place", Otis Smith "let her go" Perception, and Nolan Chance "just like" from Pete Waterman £1 each originals, and in mint condition, again Pete must have sold up about this time the smiling face logo he used well before Acid House, my 1st Demo was from Soul Bowl £1.75 in 74 cheers John, I then got a Shooting Star issue at the casino, so I had them all or so I thought, I remember Addy C returning from a stateside trip with some great records "What" Judy Street, Herbert Hunter, I got from him, but it was around this time, I heard not from Addy but as a rummer that Addy had the rarest record in the UK Nolan Chance on BUNKY?

Now I can state I have never spoke to Addy about the record, However if he said he had it, it's 100% true, and it's existence is also very plausible, as BUNKEY was a top DJ & record Label Owner as well as a Producer, The most logical explanation is he was so impressed with the record he made sure that his 10 most valued Friends had a copy with his name associated to it's release on Constellation, as the record has Bill Shepherds name on it, this is the only explanation, that I can Give.

To conclude the Denise La Selle was first issue on a Blue label Tarpon & then on the rarer Green label as yet no instrumental has been located, but there is a great semi instrumental of it the value of the "Just Like the Weather" are min:- OOTP £20+. BLUE PLAIN £150+(there are counterfeit from 73 so make sure first worth £30+), Star Label design £175+, Demo £250+

there are Bunkey Bootlegs and other releases about, I have just put the most significant ones down.

I think your answer is best coming from Addy Himself..don't you:ph34r: DAVE KIL

Looks like a photoshop job to me! Especially as the Nolan Chance record came out 2 years before the Bunky label started up

I missed a BUNKY copy early days of ebay, because I thought it was boot so didn't bid on it, it went for peanuts as I think others thought the same, it was only later I found out it hadn't been booted on the BUNKY label that has been shown on Mick's earlier post.

but Constellation went out of business in '66 didn't they? Presume Bunky Sheppard owned the rights and took the Nolan Chance recording/masters with him, releasing it on his own label?

The label only formed in summer '63 so wouldn't say label change long before (yellow to blue)?

I wish someone would find a load of Exodus issues/demos of the acetate of Mill Edwards Butch has, by far vocally the best recording IMHO.

The orange speckled Bunky and the yellow Constellation scans have gotta be false...the font for the title/artist is incorrect on both!

There was a plain blue labelled Bunky bootleg back in the 70s...scan in Manships book

The original Bunky is sparse looking and came after the Constellation release...an expensive/rare 'reissue'..kinda like the Ivorys on Wand

Been trying to find out where I got that Bunky scan from - I thought it was this site a few years back, but I've just wasted an hour of my life in a fruitless search.

It never occured to me but that font does look wrong - looks just like it's been lifted from the the yellow copy.

Cheers

Mick

It uses the Constellation number, only with a B prefix...most odd!

Mind you, a similar thing occurs with Frankie Beverly on Rouser, the catalogue number being the Fairmount issue!

i always thought that was dodgy as well............................ its certainly a reissue lol. going back to that yellow constellation. the typeface dont look right. first time i saw that was when it was posted up on here..............................just a bit of fun i think, as for that bunky

Mike Ritson and I did some research on this yonks ago, I can't remember the complete outcome but it appears to be a re-issue after Constellation went bust and BS made copies, sort of personl demos and tried to hawk them around the record companies trying to get a national release. A bent 70s boot is it not.......................................

Hi Chris,

Agree that it was later than Constellation and there are genuine Bunky copies...but to clarify there is also defo a blue labelled Bunky bootleg as featured in JM's book.

Hope you're well, squire,

Cheers Mick!! Sorry a bit late with the gratitude but just in the middle of moving house first time near pc for days !! Atb John.

No probs John, although as I said earlier in the thread, I have no idea where I got that scan from, and It would also seem it is a fake. - does anyone have a genuine label scan, or even a description of what the label looks like - I know one or two have (or had) a copy, and the only thing I can work out it the label is a bit basic.

Cheers

As I understood it, Richard Searling was supposed to have had a Bunky copy, but in the many times I followed him, I dont ever recall seeing him play it.

The scan above is absolutely the wrong font - its a latter day mash up - a derivative - and the numbering is just a lazy straight copy info from the Constellation 45.

I don't believe Bunky would have ever put it out using the old Constellation series numbering.

The Yellow Constellation copy also looks dead wrong, though its not a 'straight lift' from the Bunky mash up!

Could well be the same 'arist' though fannying about with photoshop, just for a bit of a wind up.

And here it is (scan taken from Manship's guide):

post-1392-031180500 1285856041_thumb.jpg

Looks very VERY like one of Mr Soussan's pressings.

He did get in touch with a lot of Master tape owners - Modern / Mirwood / Soultown etc for some of his pressings.

Perhaps he did a deal with Mr Sheppard. and perhaps some were made with the established Bunky multicolur design, but then againunsure.gif

A couple of years ago i raised this question on here, the result of that thread was that Ady croasdell had a copy, so maybe he`s the guy to ask on this.thumbsup.gif

:lol:HI ALL, I THOUGHT I HAD SAID THAT ADY C, WAS THE MAN TO ANSWER THIS QUESTION? AS TO MY KNOWLAGE AND FROM THE TIME HE GOT IT, BUT I HAVE NEVER SEEN IT, SO IT'S DOWN TO ADY, AS NO ONE ELSE HAS HAD A COPY!!

THINKING ABOUT THIS RECORD, DIDN'T ADY & MICK SMITH, DISCOVER "LENNY GAMBLE" AROUND THIS PERIOD:yes:??

Probably the one I won the scan of which I posted on here years ago and is the one Mick has posted. Its a stick on label on a boot.

Richard Searling did have a white demo on Bunky which he got off Paul Tindale but I don't think anybody has seen an issue.

To reiterate: I bought a white Bunky demo off Dave Burton in his Harlequin record shop in the early 70s, circa 1973, when Dave had a magnificent box of soul demos from a UK music business source, several went on to become Northern monsters. I sold it to John Vincent at St Ives in the later 70s. I remember asking John Anderson about it in the mid 70s in Val Shively's shop in Philly and he said it didn't exist; I put him right.

Ady

Did the label look like any other variation of Bunky that we are familiar with, or was it something different to the usual designs?

I think it was unusual, certainly nothing like the Bunky Esquires issues as far as I recall. White with black lettering I think, but my memory's not great from then, I was whooping it up a lot.

Someone ask John Vincent, he was around recentish.

I actually saw Ady's copy back in the day, several times in fact while it was in his possession.

From memory the design was the same as the later Constellation 45s i.e. no real label design, just fairly standard lettering (think Gene Chandler 'Mr. Big Shot' and you'll know what I mean - only in white, as Ady says, of course). with 'Bunky' at the top in a slightly larger font, and the address or possibly some 'distributed by' information underneath.

I'm pretty sure, too, that it had the usual 'Bunky's PicK' and 'X' on the label and that it was a 'Nashville Matrix' stamper.

Oh, and it was vinyl.

Hope this helps!

TONE

PS - I'm pretty sure that it wasn't distributed by Scepter, BTW.

This one goes on and on...Mr. Manships description of the runout and matrix stamp corresponds to the Constellation release - so did Bill Sheppard have a short run done from the original stampers?

Released on both designs for Constellation.

I have these two, BOTH "Arp" Matrix.

However, the Interesting thing is, the Deadwax is Identical except that the "Arp" Stamp Appears to be A DIFFERENT WAY UP ON THE DEMO

(180 Degrees) Compared to the Stock Copy. (Both Sides) ?

Makes me wonder how many runs there were at the pressing plants.

I bought both DEMO & Stock Copy from Soul Bowl in the Mid 70s, I'm almost certain it was before 1978.
