Phil Blacknell Posted September 24, 2010 Posted September 24, 2010 (edited) I've just had a bad experience buying a tune in a set sale from a known Dj and Collector I'm not going to name him, although I should because I wouldn't want any one else to experience the disappointment I've just had, he has sold on Soul Source, I did the deal with him I sent payment, a week later I got a phone call to say he had a better offer for the record and he was going to accept it.....so I lost out how pi####ed off was I This is the first time in 35 + years of collecting it's happened to me, I didn't think it went on amongst collectors. Does this sort of thing go on? Has anyone else had this done to them? Phil Edited September 29, 2010 by Phil Blacknell
Pat Wallace Posted September 24, 2010 Posted September 24, 2010 Never had a situation so cut and dried as that. That is Bad practice. I have sold things and wished I had 'nt but they still go out. My view is that once a yes is given it's sold and that works both ways. Pat
Guest MissHongkongfuey Posted September 24, 2010 Posted September 24, 2010 Thats extremely slack Phil!! Although not the same.....I went after a 45 from a sales list on here last year. I was beaten to it by a few minutes only for the seller to be informed that it was no longer wanted due to "payment issues". I was then given the offer to buy the same track as i was the next on the list of members that wanted it. He then told me that he thought he'd under-priced the record and asked me for an extra £20 if I still wanted it. My feeling was that he had plenty of interest, so he pretended the original buyer had let him down, so he could up the price. Not the same by any means but rather a shitty way to do business IMHO Teresa
TOAD Posted September 24, 2010 Posted September 24, 2010 id name and shame ! most dealers are BRILLIANT on here
Mark Bicknell Posted September 24, 2010 Posted September 24, 2010 That's really shitty Phil, we have all dropped price bollocks over the years but that's the game, once a deal is struck it should be a done deal, how many of us can say oh I wished I'd have held out for a better price or I should have priced higher, with the market being what it is he should have been glad of a sale and supplied you with the record at the original asking price, still you'll never deal with him again will you. Regards - Mark Bicknell.

Jumpinjoan Posted September 25, 2010 Posted September 25, 2010 Wow. He had your money for a week before turning round and saying he was selling it to someone else? That is truly shameful.

What I say is this, it's your record fact you have paid for it from the time you put a date on the cheque, inform the seller that it's yours and if you want to sell it on ask him for the better offer details?? quite simply this is no mistake is it, he taking you for a **nt, ask yourself am I a **nt or ask this if the person was say at a fair and excepted the Cheque, only to contact you a week later for the record back, as he had a better of! would you be a stupid **nt sending it back to him??? I say NAME AND SHAME HIM< if you are a bit scared PM me and I will help you out, DAVE(anytime every time)KIL
Marc Forrest Posted September 26, 2010 Posted September 26, 2010 I've just had a bad experience buying a tune in a set sale from a known Dj and Collector I'm not going to name him, although I should because I wouldn't want any one else to experience the disappointment I've just had, .. well but how can you make sure no one gets "trapped" the way you were when you don`t name this fella ? In this special situation I would also say name and shame him... A deal is a deal is a deal isn`t it ? Marc
Chris Anderton Posted September 26, 2010 Posted September 26, 2010 We all make mistakes in pricing records, as a dealer you know when you have done this because you get 10 orders for the same record in the first half an hour! I do one almost every other list, the last one was Clousel on my last list at £50...but i have to smile because although I could have got more i`m still making money on it and that was the price i put it out at. To be honest making an error really doesn`t bother me too much...at least it means people will read my list thoroughly in the future rather than it being just a list of Manship price guide stuff you often see listed...keeps the list interesting too. Sometimes I have made a maistake when i think i have 2 copies and sell them both, only to find one is not in such good shape, this is just an honest mistake and i`m nothing less than apologetic to the buyer....agreed i should be more thorough but i admit it is a genuine error. However, such as in this case, when a deal is done, its done...and nothing , not even getting a better offer should change that. This dealer wont be in business long if he treats his customers with such disrespect. Chris
Prophonics 2029 Posted September 26, 2010 Posted September 26, 2010 Had one guy accept my offer on a record he was selling, went to work and when I got back home he had let it go to someone else, I always play the first come and pay first served game .
Benji Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 A deal is a deal is a deal isn`t it ? Marc This sounds like paragraph 1 in the 285 Ferenghi Rules of Acquisition but I'm afraid Soul Source isn't Star Trek. Too many rather dodgy things happened to me when buying on Soul Source I eventually don't really bother any longer. Being skint helps as well
Dennisoul Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 That's outragous....you'd actually payed for the record...av never heard anything so rotten. As been said, once your offer had been accepted that's it, it's yours.
Guest in town Mikey Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 Just adding my agreement. I dropped one on a Lou Courtenay tune that the Funk lads were after. Within 5 minutes I had 30 requests for the record. But I sold to the first one to contact me. Fryer I think. Its gutting, but sometimes you have to bite the bullet. And like the person who listed a tune on ebay buy it now £25 that I immediately sold to a dealer for £280, I would have done the same had it been the other way around.
Pete S Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 I listed a record this morning for £15. Someone told me they'd give me £50 for it as I'd made a mistake, which was really nice of them. I've now been offered £150 for it by two different people. If I was to sell it to anyone but the first guy, I might as well pack this business in as any integrity I had would be wiped out with that one transaction. Plus I'm not greedy.

Reg Scott Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 I eventually got offered 250 for it. Talk about making a cock up! Pete's spot on, he made an agreement and kept to it. I've just tried to buy a number off records off a 'member' on here and what a ball ache. This time it was the unwillingness to accept a standard paypal payment even though I would cover the fee and it was the first time I had even heard of the 'person' never mind dealt with them! As D says, don't be taken for a c**t. A good dealer will happily accept the buyer needs to retain some rights.. Hardly ever had a problem on here but you have to ensure things are done right. The member apologised but no deal will be done as the honour and respect that we need to show each other to make this forum work has been abused. God knows it's a buyer's market at the moment ffs! ATB Greg.

Guest Ivor Jones Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 I`ll put you all out of your misery, it was me..... This is going to be my only posting regarding this,i wont be getting into a load of pointless bickering about the matter. There are a few points which i do need to address though ,i`ll try and keep it short for clarity : Phil Blacknell reserved a record from a recent listing of mine from SoulSource. It was reserved on Sunday 19. A cheque was sent to me. During the 5 days it took for the cheque to arrive,i was offered what i considered to be a very substantial amount [ an offer of £400 on top of the asking price to be exact ! ], which,by the time Friday had arrived and still no Payment from Phil,i decided to accept...... When i phoned Phil in the morning to give him the bad news,he obviously wasnt happy and a few hours or so later,he decided to start this thread. Phils cheque turned up later that day[Friday]..........but of course, by then, the damage was done..... So,at no point then, when i had accepted the higher offer, had any money been received by me,let alone "sat on" by myself as someone had implied on the thread. It took a week to arrive......... The next point is: Im not a dealer. Im a collector who sells a few spares or the odd piece out of my collection to fund other purchases. Luckily, unlike some on here,im not a dealer having to sell records at any cost to make a living. As a collector,i can sell or not sell to whoever i choose. After looking at the posting and giving some thought over the weekend,i decided to turn down the much higher offer,[not one of my brighter moves i think] and offer it back to Phil. As far as i was concerned the matter was resolved.I asked Phil to close down the thread which obviously he hasnt done. When looking at the thread today,[and i hadnt seen this before today],i find that Phil thought it was acceptable to offer up my identity to whoever could be bothered to email him. Im very disappointed about this....... This was a private sale and as far as im concerned,a private matter between two people. I didnt ask for all this to be posted up on a public forum, this was Phils doing. My reputation,[whatever that may be], is important to me and the fact that my name has no doubt been dragged through the mud to lord knows how many people ,has , in my veiw, forced me to make this posting. Anyone who really knows me or has bought any records from me over the years will know im a good bloke, honest and absolutely straight to deal with. Im confident you wont find a single person with a bad word to say about any sales or dealings ive had,[except Phil maybe but then theres a first time for everything as they say !].... Anyone who doesnt know me can make their own minds up,if they havent already done so . My 25 odd years Deejaying and even longer collecting on this scene means many people will know me and i feel,it is being used against me as a threat of being outed as some kind of fraud. I have consequently found the whole tone of the thread to be reminiscent of a McCarthyist era witchhunt with everyone baying for me to be named and shamed. I have also found all the posts, when taken collectively, to be of a very bullying nature. However, i dont take kindly to bullying in however crude a form it may appear. Im 47 years old ,ive never stood for bullying and im not about to start now....... So, because of this fact, and ONLY because of this fact, this record is no longer for sale........ At any price. Not to the highest bidder. Not to Phil Blacknell. I`m keeping it. It can languish on my shelf for another 20 years ! I couldnt possibly sell it under such conditions and not feel like i was giving in to bullying tactics. I have to go with my heart . And if i do choose to sell it at some point in the future,i can assure you it wont be on SoulSource. Because im a gentleman,i`ll take this opportunity to appologise sincerely to Phil Blacknell for any inconvenience, and wish him luck in finding a copy of Earl White Jnr in the future......... Phil. Your Paypal payment has been returned and your cheque is on its way back to you.... As a footnote, my lovely wife says my talents are being wasted in my job as a Construction Site Electrician. She thinks ive shown much promise as a potential Estate Agent.............. Yours Sincerely, Ivor "Gazumper "Jones

Phil Blacknell Posted September 29, 2010 Author Posted September 29, 2010 (edited) I feel I need to correct the points that Ivor has put which in some cases are untrue. I first seen this record for sale on soul source on Saturday I pm Ivor that night asking if it was still available his words were be quick I really didn't want to sell this I was hoping other records off the list would go first and asked me to pay by paypal as a gift . I had no funds available in paypal at that time and asked could I send a cheque which he agreed it was sent out first class on Monday morning and Ivor does knows this as he did say he seen it was posted on the Monday the letter was date stamped so as far as me taking five days to post a letter this was a lie .I CAN NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ROYAL MAIL. So as far as I was concerned this record was mine and the deal had been done. The fact is Ivor was offered a higher price for this record which he accepted before even notifying myself he had sold it to someone else, he then pm me asking me to phone him on the Friday morning which I did to be told the record was no longer for sale as he had a better offer, so in this circumstances he let greed get the better of him .So you can understand how annoyed I was to be let down over a record which was promised to me which led me to put a posting on Soul Source. I was extremely annoyed about his actions and bad practice so I did put a thread on soul source for people to read to stop this happening to others I did not name Ivor in my initial thread but I was inundated by people wanting to know who it was and was told I should name and shame him for his poor actions. Ivor then contacted me by pm on Sunday to apologize for how he had acted over this situation knowing he was in the wrong and asked me if there was anything he could do to make it right. I replied the only way he could resolve the matter was to sell me the record as promised and close the deal. Ivor did say the record was mine and requested me to close the thread which I did .i put this matter has been resolved and no more issues which everyone can see. Maybe I am in the wrong for not contacting Mike asking him to close the thread so I apologize for that. Monday Ivor pm me to say the record was mine and could I pay by paypal and he would return the cheque . So I agreed and paid by paypal Monday night. I never got a response to say he had received payment and just come home today Wednesday to read what he has posted. I can not be responsible for how people feel and if he feels he has been bullied in some way WHEN THIS IS HIS OWN DOING then maybe he should rethink how he has treated me over this record and maybe he needs to rethink how he sells records in the future. As a "deal is a deal". Anyone that knows me knows I always keep to my word when buying any records and I would never go back on a deal but it's a shame Ivor doesn't have the same Morales as me and this would never of happened if he had kept to his word . NEV Posted September 29, 2010 Posted September 29, 2010 Hi Phil ...or anyone else reading Not wishing to fuel the pot here ,it's not for me ,but all i want to add is this, I have had a paypal account for a few yrs now and wether i have funds in it or not ,if someone wants paying via paypal ,i can still send money . Two ways .....i can either have funds taken directly out of my bank account or from my credit card . Obviously you need to register a bank account or card to do this ,but it does'nt cost any extra and is'nt difficult to do. Also with a bank account registered ,you can then withdraw funds from paypal to our bank . Cheques will soon be a thing of the past so it's worth thinking about . Have a nice day p.s Yes i know all about paypal fees ,its a sorry old debate that's been done a 1000 times ,so please ,please don't drag that up again:angry2:
