Is Aretha Franklin the most over - rated soul singer?

Or has she just been badly managed?

Did Billy Preston over make a good record?

What the hell was going on with that organ?

Who's out most prolific crossover artist- Darrel Banks?

Most prolific crossover label - Stax?

Col.

ps there's only 1 good record that uses an organ and its

Darrell Nulisch - Handle It With Care

Its a 2003 cd, Darrell Nulisch Times Like This Severn Records (www.severnrecords.com), try Rod Dearlove, rest of cd is fairly bluesy. May have dissapeared like lots of these cds have already.

Something tells me (damn these voices  ) It may have got a reissue on 7" as its on a Togetherness cd I think

Cheers

Jock

And in answer to the first question is no Aretha is the most underrated soul singer in my view in that most real soul fans seem to knock her, I assume due to her popularity, but to me she is up there with the greatest.

What type of organ was used on Handle it with care , a Rolf Harris stylophone. Its absolute rubbish.

And yes Billy Preston did make a decent record with Let the music play which knocks that limp wristed effort in to a pile of shite.

aretha is a brilliant soul singer and like many of her genre isnt as respected in her own country as in the u.k. or europe, hence the northern soul scene etc

billy preston was good enough to make his own records like "in the midnight hour" , "billys bag" and to play with the beatles as well on one of their hits

as for organ music , the best soul one I ever heard is andre brasseur with the kid !!!!!!!!

Aretha has scaled heights of artistry that most mortals can only dream of. Yes, she's made some poor records, from the start of her secular career, right up to her latest album. But when she's good she's amazing. To me she is cruelly underrated by the Northern scene. I dunno why, when you consider tracks of hers' that have been played, from "I Can't Wait..." to "I Needed You" to "Integrity" and a few others in between.

The Darryl Nullisch record is ok. Andy Mann played it to me a couple of years ago. He's a white blues musician, if I remember rightly. He's not better than Aretha, and never, ever will be. Get things in perspective!

Organ on records: what about Bobby Reed: surely it is the organ hook that makes "The Time Is Right For Love" so special. Also, what about Booker T? Titanic records like "Melting Pot" (my favourite) and "The Best Of You".

A great oddball Northern 45 dominated by Hammond organ is "Jimmy's Place" by Jimmy Thompson: I never tire of playing that one, it's a wonderful piece of 'feel-good' music.

Yes he did an amazing version of "A change is gonna come" on Motown in the 1980's. The b-side "You" is a pretty nice dancer that could do with a few plays. It got a uk issue get it while it's cheap or regret it.

The Darrell Nullisch tune is available on a 45 released at the same time as the latest "Togetherness" compilation CD on Expansion. I like it. It's very similar in feel with the latest couple of albums by Nick Lowe so it would be strange if I didn't like it. He's got quite a weak voice though, but it's a decent track nontheless.

While I am not sure if Aretha is the greatest female soul singer, she is definitely up there at or near the top.

I saw her at the Finsbury Park Astoria (later the Rainbow) when she first came to the UK in about 67 or 68. Absolutely brilliant performer and band. And those of us in the audience lapped it up.

Is the reason many don't rate her is that most of her records don't get played on the Northern scene?

As for Billy Preston, Billy's Bag used to be one of my favourite records when it came out on Sue, memories of Bluesville, Manor House and Mike Raven playing it on a Wednesday night while we used to dance to it. Loved the bongo bit in the middle. Oh happy days!

I do like the Darryl Nullisch record. If you like it try Lonnie Givens' Hang On To The Blues.
