This is what the seller says about it...

"Are trying to say my copy is a bootleg? If so, then you are severely wrong. This 7" was sent out by the record company to DJs, the difference between the 2 are the pressings, the ones with the colour are the 1st pressings."

"I can inform you that information is either incorrect or maybe partly incorrect. My father was a DJ and this was one of many vinyls that the record companies sent him. I can assure you this is 100% real and in no way a bootleg. Unless of course it was the record company who were supplying bootleg copies, which I'm sure you'll agree isn't likely."

Boot.Rough paper label.Siver text.

The originals have Nasco in multi colored text, smooth label.Just like my other B&Pieces i have for sale.

I thought it had been established that the silver text copies were more of a re-issue / re-press by Nasco records than a 'Boot'

Check out this thread from a couple of years back:

I know it doesn't explain where these copies came from and how the seller's dad above may have got one from. But in the back of my mind I do seem to think it was mentioned on here at some point?

That's what I thought, John, it was a repress rather than a bootleg.

Agreed : from what I recall , done to meet " demand " ?

Malc

Probably so Malc, but "Smoke stream" was not really ever in demand for a period that I would have thought was long enough to warrant a repress?

Unless it / they already existed in that format in the States and someone over here got in contact with either the label or a distributor for copies?

Surely somebody knows someone who was involved in this 'deal' (when these copies turned up in the UK) who can put us in the picture?

Don't know if this is of any relevance but I had a copy of 'Smoke Stream' Black & Silver Label which had a sticker on stating it was a BBC Radio Derby Library Copy ( Surely the Beeb wouldn't play boots !) or would they?

Loved this disc from the moment I heard it booming out at the Casino.........love the way it stomps in the break..........one of those records that you can really appreciate at home for its vocal & musical qualities, but which also takes on a completely different & tougher persona when heard through a massive system & your right in the groove, huge dancer, remember running to the floor for this every time..............not heard it played out in years & wonder how it would sound these days at a nighter & what the dancefloor reaction would be............not a forgotten record by any means, but one I have never heard played at a Nighter venue for many years & I wonder if it was played again at the right place, at the right time, by the right DJ ( ) if it would find favour once again on the dancefloors............I reckon it would be a contender..........regardless wonderful record.

Russ...it's been a major spin to the masses for the last 20 years. A full floor romping away to it last night at Blackburn.

On the subject of the reissue. Nasco masters have been available from day one. I think they themselves reissued it due to a particular order from the UK in the mid 70's( Soul Bowl?). They were easy to deal with and contactable as they still are.

At Global Records I ordered the Bit's n' Pieces and Brothers Sisters Cousins titles from Nasco when Ian Levine was playing them. The ones we got were the original coloured labels. I'm not sure how many we got but at least 600 to 800 of each. As they didn't sell out for a while I never re-ordered. The re-press copies probably were done when Wigan played it and Nasco knew the copies were destined for the UK so didn't bother with a more expensive colour label.

Incidently it was possible to bulk order from the record labels quite a few early 70s indie records in 75-77 that Levine was playing as rarish records. Some I remember are Oscar Perrys on perri-tone, Danny Reed, Tradewinds, Carstairs and titles from Gooda-Mooga in Paris.
