Guest Mrs Simsy Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 They've started a Facebook group, 'Save the 100 Club'. It will be a massive shame if the club isn't saved!
Guest Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 Yep joined it. The Cavern Club is preserved so why not The 100 club it's got more History in it
Guest Mrs Simsy Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 Yep joined it. The Cavern Club is preserved so why not The 100 club it's got more History in it Simsy was just saying similar. Hopefully some of the bands that got a break down there that are now big will help out. I've joined the group too. Can say one thing, the nighters will be packed from now until then!
Ric-tic Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 Yep joined it. The Cavern Club is preserved so why not The 100 club it's got more History in it not quite it closed in 73 was bulldosed and rebuilt and not quite to scale
Bigsoulman Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 Gutted if this goes ahead One of the best venue's in the country atmosphere wise, just another example of Westminister council greed and total lack of respect, I've been hearing about them all weekend when I was down, imagine closing a club steeped in such a rich musical history for the sake of a few quid... Lenny
Wiggyflat Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 Boris should intervene.........the clubs steeped in history and not only from a soul perspective. Just think of the jazz artists, punk, mod, rock and skiffle bands that have played there.Surely it must be a listed building??.I'm not sure if some rich benefactor or philanthrophist will intervene...look at the Marquee
Mick Howard Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 https://www.thisislon...-to-100-club.do Be a disgrace if it does. Say it aint so Ady. Not really Ady's shout is it? According to the article its down to two things: Westminster Council lowering its ratesThe Landlord lowering its rentWho, other than a billionaire with money to burn, would want it with that rent & those rates even with such a history?. I think its day is approaching Mick
Kev Moore Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 No o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o .......just when I was getting used to the place. It can't be true.
Guest Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 Not really Ady's shout is it? Mick Never thought it was but Ady would have more knowledge than most of what's going on. Tony Morrison of Long Tall Shorty a regular band that's played down there since 78 is talking of setting up a paypal account so people can help pay the rent. Minimum donation a quid.
Mark Bicknell Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 (edited) Shocking news, trouble is you can bet your bottom dollar that if it does close some multi national chain or company will steam in there and open a bistro or coffee shop, the location is perfect for that type of business, pretty sure we can put a hole in the rent and rates and maybe set up a soul source/scene fundraiser? what you reckon Mike? pretty sure over the past 31 years this venue has touched all our hearts in some shape or form, it's a special place not just for the soul scene but the world of music in general, maybe some of the big guns who have played there over the years can also help from the financial perspective? you can't just push all that history away it's a disgrace. Guest Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 If they can pull down the Casino/Clifton hall/Winter gardens, why not this place..............i want another coffee shop/sandwich shop,or tourist tat shop move on !!,be sad but not the end of the world come on !!
Guest lasttraintowigan Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 No no no no no no no no. Found my lost soul there .... they can't take it away....
They won't be pulling it down will they just ripping out the guts. It's not just about the Soul thing down there it's everything. I've probably been to see more bands down there than niters.
Steve G Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 Read about this in the Evening Standard. Story of rip off rents, can't make enough money to cover costs etc.

I've probably been to see more bands down there than niters. It's still not the end of the world is it,you'll still be able to have yer picture taken outside underneath the plack wont you and bands will still be playing somewhere else.......me i have more important things to worry about....like i said sad but.

I'm not worried it's just a shame and if there's something i can do like donate some cash or go to a benefit gig for it i will. I don't need my pic taken outside i've got plenty taken inside
Mark Bicknell Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 It's still not the end of the world is it,you'll still be able to have yer picture taken outside underneath the plack wont you and bands will still be playing somewhere else.......me i have more important things to worry about....like i said sad but. I take it you won't be donating a few quid to help then Ken lol despite spending half your life there by the back door. Regards - Mark Bicknell.
macca Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 Tragic if it happens. Power, greed and corruptible seed seem to be all there is, sadly...
Guest Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 I take it you won't be donating a few quid to help then Ken lol despite spending half your life there by the back door. Regards - Mark Bicknell. correct.
Guest Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 Approx 200k a year just to open the door? Good lord above! It's not even a shop front, it's a cellar... I'd hate to think what shop fronts go for.
Guest Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 I take it you won't be donating a few quid to help then Ken lol despite spending half your life there by the back door. Regards - Mark Bicknell. It would take a hell of a lot more than us lot could produce I'm sure... and on a regular basis. It's not feasible unless donators want to be partners or give a sizeable sum.
Guest Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 I've pasted this from Facebook.. Tony Morrison is a top fella and an old mate. Lead guitar in Long Tall Shorty and ex Angelic Upstarts. Tony Morrison OK Folks, time for the bullshit to stop! We can raise enough by donating pennies, (or pounds), to cover this rent increase. You can donate to NATWEST BANK, Account No: 63025787, Sort Code: 60-22-05 and every penny will go direct to the 100 Club to help with this rent increase. There must be loads of musicians and pu...nters alike who don't want this place to become another fucking Starbucks. Both my bands, Long Tall Shorty and the Angelic Upstarts have had loads of great nights in this club and I have started the fund with £20. It's up to you now.
Guest Polyvelts Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 There's no way I would donate a penny to line a greedy landlords pockets by £166,000 per year nor donate to Westminster Council £48,000 a year, if it closes then it's a shame, but anyone who voted Tory and their glorious free market economy, sink or swim, greed is good...well done !
Mark Bicknell Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 It would take a hell of a lot more than us lot could produce I'm sure... and on a regular basis. It's not feasible unless donators want to be partners or give a sizeable sum. It's a shame but thinking about it you are right Karen, would take a lot more than our heart strings to make a dent in like you say 200k a year give or take a few quid, still a bloody shame though that all that musical history will be gone. Regards - Mark Bicknell.
Guest Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 It's so that time can be bought so an application for some sort of Heritage status can be applied for, I'm borderline communist yet i despair at some of the idiots that think they're Socialsts.
Guest Polyvelts Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 If all the people that said they'd seen the Sex Pistols play there threw in a quid it'd be safe for a few more years.
Guest Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 For all the Socialists that said they went on the anti poll tax march voted we'd never have a Tory govt again
Kevinkent Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 Yes it's a shame. Yes I'd miss it. But as Ady himself has reminded us recently - The 6T's Rhythm & Soul Society is not the 100 Club, and the 100 Club is not the 6T's. So......................where's the Christmas Party gonna be? - Kev
Guest Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 But not enough to help do anything about it. It's not just about the 6t's is it.
Guest Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 It's not just about the 6t's is it. It is for most people on soul source.
Guest Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 It is for most people on soul source. That's why i hate the Soul scene. You've all paid to get in, you paid for your drinks, you heard the music. You got the History for free, now it's time to pay for some of it.
pikeys dog Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 You got the History for free, now it's time to pay for some of it. Why? Because a bunch of 9th rate Punks played there? You can keep it, Chum.....................p.

You got the History for free, now it's time to pay for some of it. I am sorry but I am going to have to question this comment , didn't the customer cover all that in paying a regular door tax ? Now I am far from a regular at the 100 club but I think you have gone a little over top here and might offend a few with that comment as those that subscribed on a regular basis made the history. II'll put it down to your youth and passion , but you need correcting on this comment. 6t's R&S have done very well to remain at this venue for so long. Take a look around Oxford street , how many other clubs do you see on this street ? The street is for shopping. The 100 has had its issues in where to park and what to do when having to get train after the doors are shut. We have seen many debates in the past about the state of the venue and toilets. Now some like it shabby they throw in the oh buts nice dark dingy and authentic and true to how it was many years ago card .. well personally I like comfort , maybe its an age thing but yes comfort is good in my book and I am not ashamed to admit it. This could be .......I am sure WILL be the dawning of a new 6ts R&S club with a superb dancefloor , a great chillout area , with comfy seats and the very best of music perhaps tea and bacon butties ! Perhaps out of London and also be a venue that all the people can get to with much more ease. You may even find it only attracts the soulful soul and eliminates the lat bar tourist .... now surley that would please many ? So look at the positives ! I think to ask people to subscribe to its upkeep to line some fat cats pocket is not a good suggestion , Your energy would be best focused in supporting a new home for 6th R&S assuming you are a local. So to expect the "soul scene" to bail it out or be at fault for its demise for not coming forward with the reddies to save it is far too high an expectation in my most humble opinion. The Casino and the Torch were pulled down and the souls that supported those clubs still remain . it will be the same with the 100 , its just bricks .. time to move on my friend. I expect some help from those that care about the venue more than their own comfort. "Friend"

"Friend" This charity money could be doing better things save prop up the centre of london it doesnt need it its about time them in the centre of the known universe got a shit train out the f'ing place and supported living clubs up and down the country, anyway it would cost about £50 to rebuild the place somewhere else.

You don't go in a shop and say I will have a couple of your manciest mellons do you ? you expect a fresh juicy melon don't you.Anyway Thats by the by lets not make it personal , its happening and I think you would be well to ask for help in another place maybe a protest website where people can sign against it perhaps ? I see what you're saying Carms & i myself like a bit of comfort also but i think this is different & not just to do with the Soul scene. For me it's a building of historical importance & should be saved at all costs, i'm sure it won't be & will probably be turned into some cheesy restaurant/eating establishment where you get to hear the tunes on a cd player that used to be played at the building. I would say the same for things like Ronnie Scotts also.
Little-stevie Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 The idea of cash towards saving the 100 club on facebook needs looking at before any cash is put into it... Maybe a person can get the figure needed to cover the extra rent, a figure that can be looked at, no point just pouring cash at something that can't make a dent in the sum needed.. Then that cash don't get wasted and just end up in the hands of the greedy bastard landlords... A little time needed to take stock and stop all the keyboard bulls"it maybe.... Soul Jihad.. " Thats what i hate about the soul scene "??? how do know about all the soul scene and how we feel?? have you been all over this land and overseas too, have you met so so many of people that you can make a call on the " the soul scene ".. Some make these calls based on a few posts on a forum, the scene is bigger than whats posted on a forum.... Times are tough for me and many on the work front, lets see some figures and whats required before we think of sending some cash, it could just line a bottomless pit and be no help at all..... 1
Simsy Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 That's why i hate the Soul scene. We ain't really feeling the love for you at the minute pal to be honest. No end of pics of the Stones etc emblazoned on the walls down there. Not to mention the jazz section, nice. Deep pockets, some of those dudes. If the Facebook action gathers sufficient momentum all could be well - look at Rage against the Fooking machine!
