Mart...

You can get reissues of Uniques and Alton Ellis off ebay for a fiver at any given time.

Amazingly there is no current repress of The Loser available, I need one having sold both my UK ones.

Not sure what you're on about re The Heptones and what the f*ck is Bushman?

Seen the Alton Ellis's on e bay but never seen a Uniques repress on vinyl. Probably looking in the wrong place.

Saw a JA Derrick Harriot blank go through e bay recently but it looked knackered so left it. Suprised there's no repress.

2 different versions of the Heptones. One on Coxsone & the one I want that samples Marvin's Let's Get It On but have found one now (thanks). Think I posted it in the Soul Of Jamaica forum a while back. Samples the Uniques.

Bushman, you'll hate it Pete

Heptones doen't actually 'sample' Marvin Gaye, Pete, they simply sing '"Let's Get It On' a few times in the record.

It doesn't 'sample' the Uniques either - what your man means is that it's on the original 'My Conversation' rhythm.

Not much in it between the Coxsone cut and this Rupie Edwards-produced one but I think that, given the choice, I;d just about go for the latter...

Try Pete's and my mate Phil Etgart (philetgart@tinyworld.co.uk) - he'll be able to tell you if 'Conversation' is currently available or not and if it is he'll be able to sell you one at a competitive price.

It''s actually been repressed several times, most recently on 'Striker Lee'. Some of the represses are credited just to Slim Smith, but it's always the Uniques cut.

Got my info from the 'Let There Be Version' album Tony & thought the Heptones was just another sampled version (so many I can't keep count). Will dig it out & check but seem to remember the sleevenotes were a bit sparce.

Also heard 2 different versions by the Uniques, the version everyone knows & loves & a longer version that seemed cleaned up.

Takes me back to an old tape that a friend recorded off an album for me & it was simply called '1 fingered piano player' & was all different versions of My Conversation. Not the Rupie Edwards 'Version' album though. Any info?

Like you I prefer the Rupie Edwards one over the Coxsone one too. Was done a few years later too (1976 I think).

Just to clear things up the refosoul clip I posted up from the Rupie Edwards album in 2007 is below.

Have a listen to it at 1 min 40 secs as the dodgy horn blow from the Uniques version is in there. Intentional?

heptones - give me the right -

Still wanting all the others apart from the Heptones & thanks for looking & the info so far.

Phil's got all sorts of rocksteady represses (and originals) for sale and his prices are very reasonable. If you get in touch he'll put you in his weekly e-mail list. Tell him I sent you!

1974 for the Rupie cut of "Give Me The Right" - August 1974 to be exact. Came out the week I got back from my one, and only trip to Jamaica, I can remember going over to R & B Records in Stamford Hill and being staggered at the amount of great new releases that had come in just a few days after I arrived home.

I'm not entirely sure that there was a Jamaican issue of it, the copies that came through back then were all on the US Hot Shot label and I don;t know anyone who doesn't own it on that label.

There are at least two different-length 45s of 'Conversation'. Rupie put it out on the back of the Jamaican Underground Express issue of 'President A Mash Up The Resident' by Shorty The President, which was the record that brought the rhythm back into focus, but it was a 45rpm 3 track single, and he had to fade it before the last verse started to fit both it and the dub on the same side of the record!

There's also a great cut of it called 'Brotherly Love', on the Jamaican Pee label, credited to Chanel 5 (like the perfume!). It's a different vocal cut by the Uniques, sort-of mixed up with an organ instrumental of it (not the same organ instrumental as 'My Argument' by Johnny Melody (actually Lloyd Charmers). This was also released on UK Jackpot.

There was a Beres Hammond 12 inch on Greensleeves in the 1990s that actually did sample a loop from the original Uniques recording - it was pretty good but I can't now remember what it was called....

I bought one about 6 weeks ago on a Clocktower 45 with the straight version on the B side i.e. not that terrible organ version 'My Argument'.

They are always on ebay usa

Tone, I know this will be a bit of work but can you list me all the versions of the original Conversation rhythm that came out over here, not digi versions or anything.

There's

Uniques - island

glen adams - unity

shorty - green door

there's one on Lord Koos I think by Tommy McCook

and now I'm stuck

You have misssed out the loathsome 'My Argument' from the list, of course.

The Lord Koos Tommy McCook cut is called something like 'Aquarius Pressure' on the Jamaican label, it's on the flip side of another Shorty The President cut, called 'Half Way Tree Pressure'.

There's also 'Yama Skank' (actually Yamaha Skank) on Bullet, credited to 'Shorty And The President' (sic) with another U Roy Junior cut, which Pama called 'Doctor Run Come Quick' but which is actually called 'Doctor Come Quickly' on the flip.

The Chanel 5 cut on Pee was also issued here on Jackpot. Should have mentioned that first time around, I suppose!)

As I think of more (and I'm sure there are more) I'll come back to you.

Heptones & Uniques now sorted so thanks for the help so far chaps.

Also seen a few of the Alton Ellis but no joy whatsoever on the other version by his sister Hortense Ellis. Did it get a vinyl release as can only find it on a CD comp album?

Still searching for the Bushman 7" too & the toughie, Derrick Harriott.

Sorry, Mart, should have said - Hortense Ellis was only issued on the Heartbeat CD that she shares with her late brother...

There IS a terrific answer version, on Studio 1, on the Alton Ellis rhythm - "Ain't Gonna Change My Mind" by Dorene Scheaffer (as she's misspelt on the label). It came out in 1979 - even though Coxsone overdubbed some extra percussion and syndrums to the original 1969 riddim it's still a great version.

Very hard to find on a single now, as it was never repressed after its initial issue.

Had guessed that the Hortense version was unreleased so it looks like I'm buying the CD & also searching for the Dorene version too if my wallets up to it.

Suprised I ain't found any info on the Bushman 7" as thought it would be easy.

Any info on the tape I mentioned earlier? Was copied by me for a guy you know in London called Brenton Smith & he's kinda forgotten it.

Was several different versions of My Conversation all mixed together but apart from the Slim Smith version I don't know any of the others. None of them were on the Rupie Edwards 'Let There Be Version' CD compilation.

Thanks mate, the one on Unity entitled Peace maker by The Hippy Boys is the same track as My Argument isn't it?

The Tommy McCook on Lord Koos is, according to RKR, "Trial By War".

There's a Rupied Edwards tune on Big called Christmas Parade which is supposedly Conversation - know that one?

Christmas Parade is a (very nice) vocal tune by Rupie on its own rhythm.

Christmas Rush is indeed a 'Conversation Piece', as Toad says. It 's a melodica cut, came out just before Christmas 1974 along with yet another Shorty The President cut on the rhythm, called 'Underworld Way'. Like Toad says, it was on Success, Ja (and possibly US) release only at the time.

I've never owned a copy of the Hippy Boys 45, I did once have 'My Argument' on red and white Island, though, it was one of the last two or three in the 3000 series. I've still got it on Carib-Dis-Co - I meant to sell it when the other side 'Foey Man' was going for silly money but I couldn't find it then. The week I found it, it was re-pressed by Pressure Sounds. Typical of my luck in general, really...

Spot the mug competition, I saw one on Ebay on sunday and thinking it was the Conversation one, I snapped it up, turns out it was Christmas Parade, what a waste of £3 that was...
