100 Club, December 1984

Tommy Navarro - I Cried My Life Away

Sam Fletcher - I'd Think It Over

Melba Moore - The Magic Touch

First 'nighter I ever went to, and the first night "Magic Touch" ever got played. Ady had just got back from a US visit and there was a massive buzz about the unissued Scepter/Wand stuff he'd got. Top of the pile was "Magic Touch", but Maxine Brown's "Torture" was in there as well, plus a ton of other great bits. Fantastic night, and I had the bug good and proper after that.

my first allniter was held in a farm barn in the village of BLETSOE (bedfordshire) Haydons farm.(1972)

it started at midnite satnite/sunmorn, and finished at 6am.

the top three sounds that l remember were. . .

. . Patti Austin "MUSIC TO MY HEART"

Detroit Road Runners "SWINGING CAMELS"

Dobie Gray "OUT ON THE FLOOR"

As you approached the entrance, there was a sign hung over the barbed wire fence saying "DISCO CLUB"

in white emulsion paint that hadn't dried properly, making it impossible to read.

but despite having a petrol generator, 50 gallon petrol drums and a very leaky roof, it had the best wooden

dancefloor of all time.

hi there mr donnelley,

l thought you mite be reading the bletsoe bit as you were there also, l can't remember there being any toilets

there, not that it mattered, cos just as always, a dark corner outside usually did the trick, even the girls did the same

AND IN PAIRS!! some things never change

My first nighter would have been Unity Hall,Wakefield........late 76 maybe early 77 (Malc will know)

Sounds that remind me of that time that haven't been meantioned yet.........

Fabulettes-The Bigger They Are

Eddie Regan-Playing Hide & Seek

Jeanette White-Music

Not sure if they'd been played before at other venues but they are tunes that remind me of those early nighters at The Unity.

Ones that stick very clearly in my mind from my first few niters were:

Tammy St John - Nobody Knows What's Going On In My Mind But Me

Phil Coulter - Good Thing Going

Kiki Dee - Magic Carpet Ride (c/u as Chris Clark 'Touch The Sky' I think)

Billy Arnell - Tough Girl

Beverly Ann - He's Coming Home

Isley Brothers - Why When Love is Gone

Baja Marimba Band - Along Comes Mary

Not a great deal of actual soul in there, I know............ but that's how it was I guess.

Soul or not, Phil coulter still sounds great, very loud, in a big room!

Tough Girl was one of my all time favourites from Wigan - even if it always reminds me of the theme to "Marine Boy" for some quite obscure reason!

First biggie was Torch.

still remember dancng to

Younghearts

Fathers Angels

Eddie Parker

Duke Browner

Johnny Jones

Sappires

Earl Wright
